Күн бұрынRuin bars or ruin pubs are the cornerstone of Budapest nightlife. These local spots are very unique and you should visit at least one to see what it’s like. This video tours you around seven of the city’s most popular, including the original that started the whole scene.
Ruin bars began in the early 2000s when young people in Budapest were looking for places to go out and have a drink without spending a fortune. This led to abandoned buildings and empty lots being filled with old furniture and odds and ends and turned into makeshift cheap bars. The ‘ruins’ of the surroundings is what led to the name. There are lots of ruin bars and they all have a distinct feeling that sets them apart from each other.

i always go out, but I go to local bars to meet local people, and avoid tourist bars, I didnt travel to a country to see other tourists!

One of my best nights out was in Budapest at the ruin bars. I've never experienced anything like it and absolutely fell in love with the eclectic atmosphere. It was the time of my life!

In Polish ...,, NA ZDROWIE ' ' :) Budapest is best place in Europe. Lot to see, lot to do , best pubs , great restaurants ,beauty of city also at night. Very safe place. Been there 6 times. Made my wedding there. There is no second place like this on all of the world. Love this place. Love to back there .

Cool and groovy! Love the aesthetic! Most of those pubs strike me as being real "art galleries", where art happens, is appreciated, and people live and interact with. Fantastic! They've accomplished what a lot of public galleries aspire to. It seems to be a grass-roots, pull-yourself-up-by-the-boot-straps kind of solution that I can really appreciate. Thanks for this great video.

Sort of reminds me of Berlin around 2005 or so as the pop-up bars, clubs, and theaters (cinema) we the cool places to go in East Berlin and would take over abandoned spaces as well. Over time the pop up places would become permanent and too popular and a new Area would get pop up spots and become secretly cool. Traveling I don’t go to clubs much, but used to at home. Restaurants and bars to get to know locals is where I became more comfortable when traveling.

Great tip if you want to skip the line at instant: Book the hostel above it for one night, you get a wristband which lets you skip the whole queue ;) It's only 10-15 euros or something for one night

You're always introducing me to new concepts! I love it! As a 59 year old, I'd go to a ruin bar in a heartbeat! Do they ever have live music or always a DJ? Really great concept and I love the aesthetic!

Hiya guys and a massive Thank you for your upload. You certainly did save the best one for last and after watching your ace upload, Szimpla was the only one I attended on the 01/12/19 getting there early as to stay all night (which I did). This place is simply amazing with cool weird and wonderful items everywhere with a fantastic 'buzz' and I ended up in a cast iron bath with a sheesh and some naughty looking bread whilst happy faces danced around me. Fun video, I am happy you like it there. I live next to Udvarrom, fun place, I remember when it was just a ruined house, not a fancy ruin bar. :) Letter "s" in Hungarian is like "sh" in English, so Soproni sound like "shoproni". Same for Budapest as "budapesht". Cheers in Hungarian is "egészségedre" (egees-shee-gedre, or something :))

Thom Poz Absolutely true, s is pronounced like (Sh) but sz sounds like the normal s, so "Égészégedré" is well pronounced... :D

Not really! It's not "Égészégédré", because after the sz, there is an s too. It's literally meaning: for your health. egészség=health, but it's created from the world egész=whole/entire. Thom is right, it's pronounced like -egg-aes-shee-gedre-. ;)

This is why, dear readers, you should always be careful when taking advice from native speakers who have never studied how to teach their own language. We are all usually unaware of how we actually pronounce things. We think we are. But we're not. How many native English speakers are aware that we don't actually say 'ten pigs' at normal conversational speed. We say 'tem pigs'. If you listen carefully to Hungarians speaking at a normal speed they don't really pronounce the sz and the s in egészség separately. It ends up sounding more like egésségedre (egehsh shehg edre). Also don't hide it from people that a is pronounced o in Hungarian so Budapest is really Budopesht.

I went to a huge club in Prague on another visit (I think it was the biggest in that part of Europe at the time) but I can't remember the name or if it's even still there. Have a fun trip though!

If you are in Hungary next time, you must visit Szilvásvárad and if you are already here or not far from Eger. The Helikon Castle Museum (Keszthely, Kastély u. 1, 8360) and Lake Balaton. And there are plenty of other beautiful places to list. In addition, if the food tasted good in Budapest, the rural food will taste much better.

Did quite fancy the Corvin one but seemed a bit weird so we've got down instant and szimpla kert. We've booked a couple of restaurants, planning to do Borkhonya and Hungarikum Bisztro.Staying at hotel moments and I've scouted out some cocktail bars close by.

Fun fact! In Hunary we are usually not clinging with beer it is considered rude because the austrian generals who killed our leaders of the 1848 revolution and freedom war, also clinged with beer

That's actually not true. Regarding the latest researches this rumor about killing the leaders was spread by the owners of vineyard during the time when the wine consumption decreased and the beer gain popularity. This way they tried to change the process. Sot it is a "fake news" as we call it today.

I heard that it “was agreed” that we hungarians would not cling with beers for 150 years... that was over in 1998 so we can do it again. So a third version :D no but actually a lot of older people don’t do it even nowadays. So I suggest not to try it with the older generation, but the younger people generally have no problem with “beer-clinging” if they’re not hyperpatriotic :D. Cheers!

"Soproni" is actually pronounced "shopprony" (with the first syllable stressed - by the way, in Hungarian the very first syllable is stressed in every word, always. So it's the complete opposite to the French way of pronunciation. :-)).

Even if this was true that Austrian celebrated the execution with beer, according to the historical tales, this beer-cheer-ban was valid only for 150 years which ended in '99.

No one likes Corvin they ruined Müszi the best ruin bar in the city it was in the same building. Müszi was not the place for turists who buy expensive drinks mostly hungarian students and artists were going there it was the last true ruin bar.

Az előbb leírtam valakinek: Lehet. Ezt az álhírt a bortermelők terjesztették a csökkenő borfogyasztás és növekvő sörfogyasztás trendjének megakadályozására. Semmi sem igaz belőle.
