Dharma or Dhamma? That is the question! Buddhist language can sometimes be a bit confusing for beginners, especially when the spelling of certain words is slightly different across Buddhist books. The difference is mainly because the Buddha's teachings have been translated from two major languages, Sanskrit and Pali. Whether you are reading a Theravada or a Mahayana-based text, this will determine the spelling of certain words in Buddhism. In this brief video I attempt to allay some of the confusion behind this issue so you can read your Buddhist books with a little more understanding.
A list of some common Sanskrit and Pali words with similar spelling and their meanings:

Ah, very enlightening, Mindah. And fun. I'm currently reading "Oriental Mythology" by Joseph Campbell and just last night I was reading a passage where he writes "dharma" is from the verbal root "dhr" (if I could put a period under the r) "to hold up, support, maintain." Also, I learned from Campbell that the Buddha, like Christ, had 3 temptations. The Buddha's were: fear, desire, and social duty (dharma) while Christ's were: money, power, and attention. Even though they are different, it's interesting to me that all six are generated from the Ego.

when Buddhism was major religion of India that time Brahmins religion was in minority. so, Brahmins comes into Buddhism as Buddhist monks and after Buddha's mahaparinirvana they divided Buddhism into two sect, one is Hinyana and Mahayana. Mahayana was majority of Brahmins who became Buddhist monks.Indias Golden age is when Buddhism was major religion. Many Greek kings was Buddhist. Milindphana books is every one must read it. it is Q and A of Milind king ( Mirander Greek king who is grandson of Alexander) and Nagsen Monk.

Thanks for your input about all things Buddhist and Dharma. I prefer the Sanskrit for some reason. You would have noticed that Sanskrit especially, forms part of the structure of even the English language, such as Tri pitika, three baskets and dutium, tatium (pali) in the refuges meaning second and third. Sukha sounds like sugar, hence sweetness. Also interesting to note that the Pali/Sanskrit combo shows up as the foundations of Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Malaysia, because these locations were Buddhist/Hindu kingdoms in times gone by. May we all reach the end of suffering in this lifetime. Thank you so much.

Just to add a bit, the words like Dharma and Karma have existed for at least 500-2000 years before Lord Buddha’s arrival. For instance, the word Hinduism (a word coined by Persians) is actually called “Sanatan Dharma” (eternal law) in the Vedas. What’s important is to understand that Lord Buddha changed the definition of “Dharma” and “Karma” rather than inventing those words. For instance prior to Lord Buddha there was Lord Mahavira (Jain religion) who defined Karma as literal actions (words and physical actions). Lord Buddha disagreed with that and he said that Karma is driven by the intention behind the actions.

If you did not like Sanskrit and taught in everyday language, why would you recast it into a language almost similar to Sanskrit. That is hypocrisy. Now people are even trying to explain that Pali came before Sanskrit that means Buddha tried teaching in every day language and not in Pali too.

Dharma not equal to Religion nd stop calling religion as dharma. Religion was never a concept in dis Indian subcontinent. In dharmic traditions a person can parallely follow both shaivism as well as Buddhism. Nd was not rigid like abrahamic religions.

Buddha's original language in which he spoke was "Kosali", which was the native language (Prakrit/Natural) of the Kosala kingdom in which Buddha grew up, and then up to the time of Ashoka The Great, this same language was adopted by him and it was started to call as "Magadhi, today we call this language as "Pali. So the original word would be Dhamma.

Buddha was not against higher castes. Most of Buddha's disciples were brahmins. This is myth that buddhism was against caste system. Buddhism was not about caste at all. In fact, in Lalitavistara is mentioned that Buddhas or Boddhisattvas take birth only in pure kshatriya or brahmin families.

@nimkati5627
@nimkati5627 3 жыл бұрын
@@NiranjanMalakar I didn't make any arguments. It's up to those who claim that Buddha was a social reformer to provide evidence for their beliefs. The fact is that wherever Buddhism went, it always accepted local social structures, be it Indian caste system or Japanese feudalism. Why would Buddhism challenge them, if the objective of Buddhism was to transcend the mundane world and not change it?
@NiranjanMalakar
@NiranjanMalakar 3 жыл бұрын
@@nimkati5627 well what you mentioned above is fundamentally against what buddhism teaches us. Buddhism doesn't believe on any thing whether is mentioned in any HOLY book or any HOLY person said. You have experience whether it true or not. Human & humanism is Most important in buddhism. Brahmin means scholor. It is nothing to do with any caste as it is now.
@nimkati5627
@nimkati5627 3 жыл бұрын
@@NiranjanMalakar Caste system is a social economic order. It has nothing to do with holy books. All Indians, including Buddhists, believed that strict social stratification was the only way for society to function properly. Equality was seen as a spiritual ideal, but in real life it was unthinkable. That's why even Buddhists kings in India used to enforce caste system in places, where it hadn't been properly established before.
