Metta, or loving-kindness, is the feeling of universal love that wishes all beings experience happiness, both worldly and ultimate. It is a state of mind that can be developed through loving-kindness meditation, also known as 'metta bhavana', which means 'to cultivate loving-kindness'. In this video I lead you through a 20-minute guided metta meditation so you can experience this extraordinary state of mind of limitless love.
This meditation can be practiced by anyone, from a religious or non-religious background. Practicing this meditation is the fastest method for developing unconditional goodwill to everyone, including our enemies. It is a very powerful antidote for eradicating negative feelings of anger and aversion.
Cultivating loving-kindness is one of the greatest gifts we can give to ourselves and others. Aside from creating very powerful good karma and merit from this practice, it will leave you radiating with happiness and goodwill for all.
This meditation was greatly inspired by a metta meditation led by Ajahn Brahm, abbot of Bodhinyana Monastery in Western Australia, whose teachings can be viewed at: / buddhistsocietywa
If you want to learn more about the benefit of metta/loving-kindness and how it forms part of the Four Immeasurable thoughts, please watch my previous episode:

I have a brother whom I'm very close with and love dearly. When I lost the negative thoughts I have against this person I'd once have considered my enemy I felt him embrace me with the same warmth and strength that my brother would. It was quite a surprise.

Have never heard it quite in this form before. Tears rolled down my eyes during most of the practice. A closed heart and mind really opened up. Thank you. Had the perfect opportunity at work to wish an enemy well through loving kindness and your meditation really made it happen. I really appreciate you.

Honestly, I cried throughout this entire video, especially when it came to forgiving my ex girlfriend and myself. I have been suffering from low self esteem for a long time, and I put a lot of the blame on myself when it comes to my misfortunes. I have been critical of myself all of my life, and hated myself when our relationship ended. I will continue with this meditation for a very long time. Thank you so much, and may you find happiness and everyone on this comment section. Lastly, Mindah, I would like to have your opinion on if mindfulness increases self-esteem.

Im so grateful, it gives my heart wings, what have I done to inherit this share? I see a different shade of life now, than ever before. Now that Goddess has turned my I's to eyes. The divine feminine is restored in my life. I am living authentically. There is so much to be grateful for. This love fills my life like water in a sponge... we are lovings... falling through a waterfall of our karma... yet there is peace. .. I am the river itself... not the small drop. Beloved... Delighted am I that you are the sea that I flow to... defy everything, defy all life's labels, and only love remains, naked I dance with god in the flower of my own life and for an eternal moment neither good nor bad draws me... my banks are open and all I can do is embrace. Come ye poor and come you rich and extract your true fortune, in gods economy everything is endless, a smile is currency and love, true love is its only lottery, ireland will not rest until every heart is in its kiss... the kiss of life.. aloha.. when you touched my soul... goddess goddash

wonderful wonderful wonderful! !!! I usually do sharon sulzbergs guided metta but this was lovely!!! Totally with you in that skepticism Geovanni. Sadness is not a death-sentence, after all. Still, the wholesale effect of Lovingkindness for the Planet almost outweighs these concerns. Maybe the word 'sadness' here translates to our present-day understanding of Clinical Depression?

I'd like to express my gratitude. I set the intention to practice this meditation everyday for 2016. And although I haven't done it everyday i do it regularly and nowadays i experience much more love and connectedness with loved ones and also with complete strangers. I still struggle with hatred, but at least now i can see that it is my own and that i now have something i can do about it. This mera meditation has helped me so much in life. And it has also helped my friends/ So please slow me to send my deepest gratitude for putting this together Mindah-Lee. I wish you happiness and true peace. PS Will continue to practice. :) I hope people find this as helpful as I do.

Loving kindness currently seems like it just amounts to giving money to people in the street, but its more than that. Its realizing those people in the street were not actually homeless, that they were actually just interesting people and its possible to become their friend in a real way not just in a pity situation. Loving kindness, they may not even really be in the street, but just be represented as that, seated in meditation, while they dwell in comfort at their residence, while attaining credit for a day long zen practice at the same time, observed by hundreds of people passing by. Loving kindness, they say, they also thought you were homeless and they were giving you money, but now you realize everyone is just enlightened and sitting at home but getting credit for meditating constantly on the street, & thats kind of funny. Thats truly kind and theres no work involved! Rather than believing people are actually worse off than us, let us instead allowing an formerly inflexible seeming world to be able to effortlessly change. And if mistakes are made. Loving kindness, just undo

G'day Mindah-Lee, Thanks to your videos, I've moved back to a cushion from a chair, so that I can be closer to the earth (though I live on the sixth floor). It's not easy: At 64, even though I've been athletic most of my life and continue to race-walk, the legs are less flexible. Never did the Lotus, but something similar to what you demonstrated with legs out in front (Burmese?). I begin with three minutes in the morning. It's a slow process of loosening the muscles, accepting the discomfort, and following the breath. Loving kindness starts with this body. I thank my parents for passing it on to me. Hope you have a wonderful week, Ernest, NYC

A friend sent me your link today. I have been dealing with a fear of being successful and being happy recently. I did not grow up in a family that showed love, kindness or even showed any kind of support towards one another. I always thought that if you truly loved someone then you would always want nothing but the best for them. This is not the case with my relatives. They're like crabs in a barrel always trying to pull each other down and never a kind word. My fear is that a I will always fail and the minute things are good I fear that it will all be taken away from me. I need to learn to except the good things and not sabotage my happiness. I deserve happiness and I wish nothing but the best for my relatives. I do know that I can not be around the negative thoughts and actions of my relatives. Thank you for this meditation tool! 😀💛

I attend every weekend a Buddhist temple in Mexico City, it is starting to transform my life from within, your guided meditation is powerful, the way you have structured it allowed me to go deep and not have distracting thoughts, the last step of giving oneself love and kindness and forgiving yourself 100% really moved me and I ended up with tears in my eyes. Thank you! I send to you all my love and kindness from this part of the world. ❤️🙏

I discovered your video through the help of a caring person. She heard of my recent struggles and current heartbreak and strongly recommended that I use Loving Kindness Meditation to help me readjust. Meditating with you not only helped me readjust, it also brought other issues to light (Self-Love). My first experience with this session had a powerful impact on my emotions at that time that I felt utterly overwhelmed from the realization of it all. I will never forget this experience and will continue to use this practice to strengthen my awareness on loving kindness and perhaps dig deeper so that loving kindness radiates from my body and soul. I am forever grateful. May you be well, may you be healthy, may you radiate love, may you be in peace

I thank you so much for all your videos. I believe I'm close to enlightenment. I've had some very profound experiences these two last weeks, in which there was understanding about the non-self, and also a greater compassion, growing everyday. In fact, I'm using the word "I" just for convention, but there is not a real attachment to this idea anymore, in this moment. I expect that this certainty and peace will follow me for the rest of this life, and I also wish from the bottom of my heart that you and every people in this world will have this experience, and remain in that equanimity and joy forever.

Loving kindness; have you ever tried to sit on a toilet that was not fully screwed down, and whose seat was not fully screwed in either so that if you sat on it too heavily in an imbalanced angle the whole thing would tilt? It can give you dizzy hips, thats for sure, even though I am not sure for certain where your name came from it remind me of those experiences. Loving kindness, may the toilet have more stability, may the hips be healthy, and may there be a sense of groundedness but also freedom. Loving kindness for the bathroom toilet, may it function and may it be truly clean and truly comfortable.

Loving kindness for Fluffy.tv, the smile is real, & the benefits that you have reaped from practicing this meditation will be with you not only through this life but all incarnations. Why? Because the buddha, when adhering to pure kindness, does not think in terms of a definite time or place, nor in terms of a self seperate from others. Therefore all impulses of kindness, settling the samskaras (painful sensory attachment that the soul eventually transcends through meditation) are local, not to any seperate being or time, but to all times. In this way karma is undone and nirvana ensues swiftly, the senses become harmless and wise while the soul basks in Wanti Buddha Land. Aigy Sheastoishioni.. it is a good day to meditate! - Dearb

Hi Mindah! Thank you so much. I really enjoyed this. I like my regular, silent meditations, but these guided ones really help accentuate, encourage, and focus them. Normally, during my "regular" meditation I'm still in "my head" and focused on quieting that, which is good, but this meditation helped me feel warmth in my heart.
