I love jazz and rock, but I was surprised that Buddy Guy and Jack Bruce co-starred at this time! I am happy to see the famous performance by the precious session.

Damn, there is a reason Marvin Gaye invited Jack Bruce to join his band. Jack has imbued his playing with the magic of James Jamerson. Being able to to wander musically while being the foundation of the band

From a '76 interview: Zappa: i met him at the backstage of Boston jazz festival, and asked him to play together if he was interested in our music. As you know, he's blind. but his body understood all of our signals. At one point, everybody in the band was supposed to get down on their back and kick their feet in the air while they still keep playing. As soon as we got on our back, he also got his back. When we got up, he also got up. He grasped everything. He is an excellent musician.

I met Buddy Guy at His show He played at the Lighthouse in Los Angeles february 1976 ,I was just a very young person training under Rockwell International people at Los Angeles Pierce (trade school) , I mentioned to Buddy that historians said He worked as a mechanic early in His career while concurrently playing the Real Blues,.......He instantly told me that He still does enjoy working on His automobile (!) at 3:30 Buddy Guy says that some body better have mercy on me ,.............THAT BE THE CASE.....some body better manufacture a higher grade of gasoline to put in these awesome cars!!!!

He invented instruments, too. You should learn about Rahsaan. Better yet look for his record "Bright Moments" or "Volunteer Slavery." He was great instrumentalist who recorded with Quincy Jones and Charles Mingus. He created the Stritch. He played amazing flute, too.

Not to mention the clarinet, nose flute, reed trumpet and anything else that could make a sound pleasing to him. They say on airline flights he would take out a recorder and play along with the tone of the engines.

I find this particular performance so interesting. Buddy Guy hypes up the solo for Roland Kirk. Leads him in and Roland passes it off to the organ player. Roland is the conductor when he plays in a band. I've wondered if this was Roland's way of taking control of the group by disobeying the direction Buddy laid.

This is a criticism I have had when it comes to other jazz performances I've seen where there is a guitar in the band. I think jazz guitar often gets buried behind the horns, especially. Great performers, though.

The mixing desk guy has cloth ears. Too much organ, no drums and hardly present Buddy Guy. I saw Roland Kirk playing in Edinburgh (Scotland) in 1972. He was playing at the University in a small lecture hall by the library. It was advertised as The Roland Kirk Trio. I seem to remember him being announced as Rahsaan Roland Kirk though Im not absolutely certain of that detail. As we went in we were told that there had been some issue with the other players so he would be performing solo. He played with a big chain around his neck which attached several instruments - different saxophones and clarinets and even a kind of chanter-whistle thing that I dont know the name of. He'd be playing a lead instrument and then put another in his mouth and play both. It was a mix and match between instruments. At one point there were three instruments being played at the same time. He played like that for about an hour and it was remarkable, truly a memorable powerful performance. There were only about two dozen people present and I suppose that the other musicians didnt show because he couldnt afford to pay them. I felt ashamed at the end because so few people had witnessed this and he deserved so much better.
