Hey man, as you can see, I still lose random corals after 15+ years. 😅 I have a feeling that it also has to do with the age of the system, things just tend to get easier after the 1 - 1.5 year mark. This tank was as rocky as my last one during that first year...

I have to say that your skills have improved tremendously, everything looks great. Everything looks so mature, and I imagine that you will have to do serious pruning to your colonies. Do you think that not having to come out with weekly content, allowed you to just let everything settle and stabilize? Whatever the reason, keep it up, your tank is awesome.

I missed afew videos, but man has your tank filled out. I've been working on a tank build for about 2 years. Realize that sounds crazy, but when I first got into reefing I bought 2 used tanks (both were the newer 32 gal biocubes, 1 was practically brand new). However, both tanks ended up cracking in the same exact location of the tank. Don't know why, both events happened in different locations months apart from one another, guessing it has something to do with the curved glass, but after losing everything in my tank, having to start over + flooding our place...twice, I couldn't take the risk again and since then I've been squirreling away parts as I can afford them. Like you though, I'm probably going to have a "main tank", and then use 1-2 AIO Nanos as quarantine/nursery tanks. As I've seen in your own videos, sometimes some corals just aren't happy and moving them into another system will do the trick (plus it's nice having other established systems in case something unexpected happens....like your tank cracking lol). I haven't gotten to some of the tricks and toys your using yet, but it's kind of nice because it gives me something to research and look forward to. We don't have a Reef Club in my area, so you as well as other YTers are my Reef Sensi's, so thanks for the knowledge 😁 [Random topic, don't know if you've said this before in past videos but what career are you in? I'm enrolling in college this semester and it's a question I've been asking more and more people as I look further into my own future]

Great video topic. I was using Brightwell Kalk +2, but the price went up too. The cheapest shipping option to Hawaii for a BRS 4# bag is $27. (Hawaii never qualifies for free shipping from BRS) I ended up going with Mrs. Wages 4# bag $27 shipped to Hawaii. I wish you also included a Budget option for 2-part dosing. I've never made my own soda ash, but I should look into it..

It's perfectly safe. I did the same thing last year and have run ICPs with no elevated heavy metals detected. The impurities are things like calcium and magnesium. It's on the chemical data sheet. BRS has to justify their exorbitant pricing somehow. That's why they didn't mention that the impurities are things you're dosing anyway. I would've stuck with BRS until Bertram Capital took over and doubled the prices of their additives.
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your vote of confidence with the Mississippi Lime! To BRS's credit, Ryan did mention that the impurities would likely go into the solid and not dosed anyways, and were pretty up-front about the other brands of kalk (though I am not sure if they used the food grade version). I am with you though, if the price did not rise, I would be fine paying a bit more even just for the peace of mind.

Cool idea, I'll see if Hanna Alk & Salifert Ca test kits work w/ freshwater and try. Otherwise I'd be keeping the same dosing regiment for my reef tank during the switch and will be monitoring the Alk level (daily tests through Alkatronic) and Ca level once in awhile (ICP), I should be able to spot it's shortcoming if the potency does not measure up.

@@spicyreef Mok-Yi would need to use a large enough saltwater sample from his tank mixed with a representative dose of kalk to read alk. From : reefstable.com/blog/stabilize-reef-tank-ph-kalkwasser - When Calcium Hydroxide (Kalkwasser) mixes with the Carbonic Acid in the water, it produces calcium carbonate and water (and a spare hydrogen ion). Ca(OH)2 + H2CO3 => CaCO3 + 2 H2O + H When the calcium carbonate reacts with CO2 and water, it produces calcium bicarbonate. This calcium bicarbonate is then used to help coral grow their skeleton. Additionally, the Calcium Hydroxide can directly interact with CO2 to produce calcium bicarbonate. CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O => Ca(HCO3)2 Ca(OH)2 + 2CO2 => Ca(HCO3)2 As you can see, there is an addition of carbonate and bicarbonate. Both carbonate and bicarbonate are "Alkalinity". In reef tanks, we measure Carbonate Alkalinity, which is the measure of how many carbonate and bicarbonate anions in the water.
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer Жыл бұрын
@@spicyreef ok I understood 50% of what @telegraham wrote... so realistically I'd just be monitoring the tank's parameters with the exact same dosing regiment and see if there is anything that changes with Alk & ICP tests... 😂

Nothing new. The difference is in the purity. BRS has a higher price because it of the grade. Is it worth it🤷. Is Tropic Marin Pro worth the cost compared to Instant Ocean? 20 years ago it was Mrs.Wages picking lime was the cheapest for a 50lb bag.
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, I'm also curious the difference between the food vs. pharma grade and whether it's worth it depending on the media... kalk I have a strong feeling that food grade is plenty good enough. Salt though, I'd also weigh in the cost of having to add back the lowered trace elements in IO compared to a more reef-focused salt, would the price difference be as much. (I don't know the answer, just a thought) Personally I jump between salt brands and don't do much water change, the running cost is not as high for me so I never dug deep on this subject... yet!
@telegraham

That BRS marketing is strong. Besides their own testing, I've seen no grade data, no C of A, no lot data, and no published raw material testing. "Pharma" on the bag, with no data, is marketing until proven otherwise.

Is this the non-existant copper mentioned by BRS, the higher levels of arsenic in BRS' kalkwasser, or maybe you're meaning the nonexistent impurities in slurry that haven't surfaced since several of us restarted the cost saving and accessible method? Impurities in slurry = flat earth. Never wonder. Just test.

I think it's worth it for me especially seeing the transformation with the SPS corals but it is an investment. I think Andre did the math and it came out to around $20 a month for a 100g tank for supplements, the more $$$ part is the semi-regular ICP tests.
