My favourite model channel! Love your son prompting in background:) I will use what you showed with my 7 yr old grandson to add a rock side finish to our homemade OO curved, cardboard double mountain tunnel. No need for expensive ready made cliff edges.

Thanks for the video on building rock faces, with the use of corrugated cardboard and filler. Will try this method on my new layout . Geoff Wallace , in Derby, UK. 👍

Back in the day before railway scenery items were available, people used to use paper mache' made from wallpaper paste and cut up pieces news paper. All mixed to together to a consistency similar to the filler you are using. You can then form it to make rock faces, hills or whatever and it dries pretty quickly. It's cheap and only costs the price of a packet of wallpaper paste which will cover a very large area. Mix it it a bucket, like you would if you are decorating, mix in the paper and it will keep for weeks if you fit a lid on the bucket, so you can use it when you want.

Great job on the rock face, maybe a thought if you wanted to model a jagged rockface. Instead of a reasonably round pebble, how about using a piece of slate pressed into the filler?

J Cameron Oh, you’ve just given me a great idea! I have some spare slate tiles left over from the kitchen floor a few years ago. They are of Chinese slate and have that uneven surface of slate. I won’t need to try to replicate a natural pattern for my rock face. Cheers!
@jcameron2554
@jcameron2554 6 жыл бұрын
JAZZ MAN You might find that you have to break the tiles to get a scaled effect. Unless the slate surface is quite rough which I can't see for a floor tile, though try it out, if all else fails crack the corner off with a hammer and use the broken edge to imprint the filler, you could use the tiles as they are but this would make for a heavy weight on the board.

J Cameron Yes, I meant as a surface to imprint on. One of the guys doing the kitchen wasn’t a fan of the uneven surface. I find trying to replicate natural random patterns, difficult but I wouldn’t have to fake it with an imprint from a real tile. It’s worth a try though.

I know this is an old video but do you know how steep the incline is/was?
@BudgetModelRailways
@BudgetModelRailways 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry no as the layout is long gone. It was pretty steep though, much steeper than the experts reckon you can do. Mind you it would only take a kato chassis and a couple of wagons

Thanks I need to do a up and under crossover but only have a short space. What height clearances would you recommend for a flat top tunnel

Best thing to do is get your tallest item of rolling stock or loco, put it on whatever track you use and measure it

Cheers! I'm about 45 years removed from being a beginner!!! :-P However, I've stumbled upon your series whilst searching low cost Model Railroad techniques. This is my fifth video of yours so far.... and you've taught this old fart modeler a few new tricks! I've a question... Your "Filler". In the Colonies, would that be considered Spackle, Grout, or something else entirely? Thanks!

Hiya, no idea exact naming, but this filler looks like a ready mixed filler for eg filling dents in sheet rock, i would try from dollar stores up etc, also, more expensive is ready mixed sheet rock filler, as long as it dries like sheet rock jointer etc you're well away

I doubt i'm breaking the official secrets act so i'll let you in on a bit of fact (info) My Fiancee works for an adhesive company, rhymes with non-stick ;-) Most of Wickes-Screwfix etc are supplied by the very company she works for ! So enjoy lower prices with the best quality hehe, ps: Bal grip make Wickes tile cement, that stuff's good for modelling on large scale but isn't exactly cheap even under Wickes brand, but hey, if you want quality tile adhesive say no more lol
