Great tip, think I will give it a go. a small pair of tweezers might be handy to peel of the backing from the double-sided tape. Cheers Greg

Yes the shingles, roofing felt system is much brazier and quicker but I only discovered it by accident once I'd tried and filmed this method !

I've been using this trick for my layout except I put glue between the ties and beside the ties so the ballast sticks better and is a similar hight to the ties.

Great method! Ideal for a small switching / shunting layout.

Looking back at how you’ve evolved things since this was recorded, you might fit example use single sided tape on the underside of the track facing up and track screws to secure the track making it easier to move with less damage to the ballast?

Nice timesaver, but for those who want to save money, try sifting gravel or crushed rock through different sized sifters and voila! free ballast :)

You need to get an appointment at You nearest nail bar for the sticky tape separating lol. Your channel is very addictive and helping my vacillation of getting back into model trains thanks for your enthusiasm it’s infectious 😉

definitely giving the one a go! I've been looking for a good way to lay my ballast for ages.

Mike, this is so good that my wife might suggest we give another try at model railroading. By the way, I am going through as many of your videos as I can. One after the other as I am ironing our clothes and whatnot. So mentally add a LOT of "Likes" for your video series as I probably will forget in my excitement.

If you want to save some money on your ballast, go to Pets at Home and buy a massive bag of chinchilla sand for about £4. Its the perfect colour for fresh granite ballast and you can add various different tones with cheap watercolours to age it.
@BudgetModelRailways5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I tried that and it comes out great like you say.

If you want a finer sand, say for a beach scene, you can get bags of fish tank sand for cheap as well.
@BudgetModelRailways5 жыл бұрын
I've used that as ballast as well
@BudgetModelRailways8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you liked it. We also have another video with an even easier but effective method.

I prefer the roofing shingles better. All that is required is a sharp sturdy knife... With the proper measurements and shingle color, and a bit of black paint, chalk, or sharpie to generate oil stains, the roofing shingles look great without the hassles.

Please can you tel me what you use for ballast and should be ballast be a mixture of different sizes and colours ? Paul

I don't use ballast, I prefer various ballast mats. Simpler, cheaper, quicker and most importantly much more reliable running
@dmu19647 жыл бұрын
yes there once was but I prefer the water and clue method may take longer but you do get beter results. looking forward to your next video keep up the good work

I really like your idea for fast and inexpensive ballasting, I’m going to give it a tryout. Billy Harper.

We use it all the time now, in fact our very popular exhibition layout uses this technique and unless we point it out no one notices it isn't ballasted in the normal way
@andrewguttry68866 жыл бұрын
Great idea.
@The20thCenturyLimitedRickyB6 жыл бұрын
Nice tip but the one disadvantage in my book is that it doesn't give the raised full look like you would get with a cork roadbed and ballast. Overall great idea
@BudgetModelRailways6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Neither does our roofing felt idea, or the commercially available ballast mats, it's a trade off with simplicity and time plus smoother running and easily changed track, which are advantages on smaller layouts or when starting out , against realism.

Excellent job - the grit used from the ballast was taken from roofing felt ?

That looks okay but I probably would made my ballast layer thicker where the track is and sealed with with a 2 to 5 parts PVA glue and water mixture that would secure it firmly onto the board. Nice idea though.
@johnbolt8066 жыл бұрын
Hi. I used gaffa tape on back of my track. I then heated it up with a hair dryer to make it extra sticky. I got my tip mentioned in model rail and got a fre plank wagon
@BudgetModelRailways6 жыл бұрын
Excellent, how did you stick the gaffs tape down as its not double sided please?
@johnbolt8066 жыл бұрын
Budget Model Railways i just pinned it down. I used a cutting board to work on and done one piece at a time. Took for ever :). I ussed a hand held hoover to clean up the excess and reused it
@DoncasterA1Music6 жыл бұрын
Will this work with any scale? Provided you use the correct ballast for that scale

Nice idea, but ballast should be up to the top of the sleepers (ties) to be closer to the prototype. Enjoy your videos
@BudgetModelRailways6 жыл бұрын
To correct yes , but depends how much skill and time you have, that's why there are several commercially available products that do the same thing. Our exhibition layout uses roofing felt and after three exhibitions no one has mentioned it yet

Hi, What are you using for your ballast? And where did you purchase your double sided tape.? It also looks like if the time comes - it will be very easy to pick your track up and re use it?
@BudgetModelRailways6 жыл бұрын
Hi. You can use any normal type of loose ballast, double sided tape came from pound land. Actually it's really tricky to get the track up without breaking it as it sticks really firm along its whole length.
@robertschworm60366 жыл бұрын
Hi, Pound Land sounds like our dollar store here in the states. I was looking at 1.8 inch carpet tape also used for holding down engineered flooring. But there was a large word on the box that said PERMANENT. My benchwork starts with 1.2 inch plywood and 1 inch of foam insulating board. So how about some long finishing nails that would reach thru everything down into the plywood. Flex trak is expensive and the thought of one day having to take it up is a concern for me. i guess we need a good solution on how to protect your track for the future. bob
@BudgetModelRailways6 жыл бұрын
We have moved on now to using roofing felt of the type used for sheds etc. It looks as good as any other ballast mat and is quick and easy. Long nails might be a solution.

I was thinking about the use of cat litter but I don’t know if the grains would be too large?

They usually are large chunks but you could break them down.

very interesting how many methods of ballast there are going on you tube. from my opinion hobbies are a way to get away from the wife, so dont mind spending more time in the man cave really. i think i would use a cork base - then apply the double sided tape - no need for track pins! any surface goes its all good great tip Also many vids just hoover up the excess ballast you reuse it in this method.

Did you make your own ballast?

Not really a new idea.Check out an Arnold catalogue from the seventies.Their ballasting system was based on using double sided tape.Worked very well actually,but as you can guess wasn't cheap

Привет. Я так понял, что балласт лучше клеить на липкую ленту - двухсторонний скоч? Возможно решение правильно, если делать макет частично или полностью разборным для скорости. :))

not the best method I have seen but like the idea

It was a standard method some years ago, it has it's pros and cons. At one time there was even a commercially available tape esp for model railways.
