The spark plug wire was hooked up. I bought this bike, a 2001 Buell Blast off craigslist. It was in somebodys back yard and didn't run when I got it. I got it running and rode it daily for about a month when the ignition suddenly cut out. Some research on the web indicated that it was most likely a bad ignition module. It gets quite hot and I live in Florida so I came up with this test in my video to see if the module worked when cold but not when hot. It seemed like the module was bad. I got a new one from the Harley dealer, some buell parts are still available new from harley, and installed it in another video. I also replaced the coil, spark plug and wire just to make sure I won't get stranded again. My Blast is still running great! I ride it almost daily as it is my only transportation. Here in Florida we can ride all year round.

Yes the red light is supposed to blink. Every flash is a power stroke, a spark at the spark plug. It should be a steady flash. I’ve been told that the ignition module can be damaged by excessive heat and it’s screwed to the hot engine case. If you put a timing light on the spark plug wire it will blink with the red light.

Nice troubleshooting.

This is 100% what is wrong if you have this happen. It seems like the spark plug wire is not hooked up. Take a bike that is running and then remove the plug. It makes the exact same "song".

I have a Buell xb12ss lightning long and it has a similar problem. after the bike has warmed up the bike starts sputtering and backfiring randomly, under load especially. Then randomly it cuts out but idles just fine. If it ever turns off then turning the ignition off and on it starts up just fine.the warmer the bike the worse it runs.
