After all these years "Expecting To Fly", is to my mind, the greatest piece of popular music ever created. Don't know why of how, but I always feel the lyrics and music, locked together, distill, encapsulate, and persistently deny clarity to every one of the deepest, most meaningful life lessons this world has to offer, if indeed that makes any kind of sense and isn't one, two or more light years too tangential.

I wish Neil had done more psychedelic/orchestral pieces like this...."Nights In White Satin" "A Day In The Life" and this song all came out in 1967. Western Civilization was still rich and vibrant, drawing from its past as it fed new expressions in Pop Music. What a time

I was 14 years old when this song was released. I was already an experienced in orchestra, and rock music, and a big fan of Buffalo Springfield. I was totally blown away by this song as it provoked such an all encompassing sound, and strong chilling feel. I didn't learn this until much later that Expecting to Fly was written, and recorded exclusively by Neil Young, using the top studio musicians of the era, without Any input from the other members of Buffalo Springfield, which engenders more respect for Neil Young as an solo artist from me. I send a special shout out here to Jack Nitzsche, who did all of the orchestral arrangements, and electric piano, Carol Kaye played bass guitar, and Jim Gordon on Drums.

“Expecting to Fly”, a lyric inspired by the poignant Disney animated film, “Dumbo”, in which an abused, orphaned young elephant with abnormally large ears is fooled into thinking that he can fly only if he holds a feather in his trunk, is perhaps Neil's best and certainly most haunting song, recorded at the beginning of his solo "production" period. While it appears on "Again", the too-soon departed Buffalo Springfield's second, classic, and greatest album, there is no evidence whatsoever of a band playing this song, less the uniquely distinctive Springfield. Not even the vocal harmony, normally a strong characteristic of the Springfield, has any other member of that band participating in it. It features Neil playing and singing by and with himself, which, as it tuned out, pretty much defines what he really wanted to do all along. With orchestrator/arranger supreme, Jack Nitzsche, Neil sculped transcendently beautiful compositions entirely separate from the band, this one above the rest. This period of lushly conceived and executed yet exquisitely tasteful composition was, however, short-lived, and “ended with a cry” after his first, eponymous solo album (January 1969) which appears to contain songs that he wrote while in the Springfield, some of which might have been on that band’s fourth album if such had been made. It has been said (by me, at least), that “Neil Young” and “Crosby, Stills, and Nash” were, taken together, Buffalo Springfield’s unmade phantom fourth album. Neil’s second and more commercially successful solo recording "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" (May 1969), which firmly established him as the new-reigning singer/songwriter, was the genesis of what became his most identifiable "sound", and was a 180-degree course correction from what he had been so recently doing. Instrumentally, "Everybody Knows…” consists of unadorned drums and bass strongly supporting two dueling guitars in a style much reminiscent of that which he and Steven Stills had created and performed with great effect in the Springfield. Completely unlike the complexly crafted recordings he made with Jack Nitzsche only months before, Neil now went entirely in the other direction, making live-sounding, raw, and basic recordings that incorporated few if any overdubs, no orchestration, lots of vocal harmonies, and long, insane, glorious guitar solos. Always a prime exponent of the finest songwriting, Neil is, to me, the epitome of the folk-rock singer-songwriter. Simply put, this song just kills on every level. It can make you cry even when you’re not sad, and amongst other things, that is what great music can do and often does.

Certainly not bubble gum pop . That is a flat out amazingly deep feeling piece of gorgeous music .

I did not know that Neil Young was with Buffalo Springfield, I know he played with Crosby Still, Young and Nash and of course his Solo career, I like a lot of Neil Young hits, especially the song Like a Hurricane, that guitar solos is very tasty, I love his songwriting and Guitar playing. I wish Neil Young would have more songs with this producer , it brought out a side of Young that was very interesting , using full instrumental strings etc.

I never particularly cared for this song, which is odd given I'm a lifelong Buffalo Springfield fan. You did a really nice job with editing and making it more than it was. I do find Peter Tork's scene from "Head" a little disconnected. The only real link between "Head" and Buffalo Springfield is that Stephen Stills played that blazing lead guitar in Tork's contribution to the film..."Long Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again?".
