We finally a few mins of dry weather so Rachel & I got to the range to try the Buffered vrs No Buffer buckshot loads to see what kind of patterns we would get at 50 meters!

That is some incredible groups. I remember the days running out with a modified choke cause everyone told me I couldn’t or wouldn’t get a decent group out of a tighter choke. I bought a butt kicker.

*Mr. Rush is right about buffer making little or no difference with "hard cast shot". I would speculate that SOFTER SHOT at higher velocities might prove to 'scatter more without buffer' or 'hold tighter patterns with buffer'. That is one of the benefits of handloading Buckshot. We can choose what we put in there to get the results we want.*

It sometimes does matter and other times no. My best pattern was with a 26" barrel and a cylinder choke with buffer. The worst was with a full choke with a 28" barrel with no buffer @ 30 yards. Remington 870 Express Magnum 12 guage. BAM #1 buck 2 3/4 ". Every gun likes something different.

I would sure be satisfied with the last pattern with the buffer. That is a dead deer and I always loved for mine to put some on target. My Late uncle had a browning that would always put two dead center until it got way out of range.

Wade, I was surprised the buffered shot in the first two tests produced less velocity. I thought using the buffer to fill the shell voids would yield more pressure and higher velocity. Too bad we didn't get the reading for the non-buffered in the third test.

My friends are using unslit steel shot wad ,buffer and skeet or IC choke .The shot stays together very well 1 b and 00 you can go to modified .But anything larger will get damaged by full choke and not fly True .Lesson I learned shooting at a doe .1 pellet hit out of 9 on a 3 inch 000.Was made by Rotweill un bugfered ..I heard whistling after the shot thought it was a ricochet .the pellets deform on full choke

I have a mate that works at the railway workshops in Queensland Australia , and I get him to cut me out a couple of hundred copper disks for overshot cards . I use an improved cylinder choke , if you put some vasoline on the top a bottom of my cartridges when it's pissing down rain to keep the moisture out . I'm a professional shooter culling Razorbacks Ferrel dogs and Roos and been doing it for over 30 years now , I do all of my traveling and shooting from horseback , otherwise you would never get to the places I need to be on some of these cattle stations , Victoria River Downs in particular it's as big as Germany in size . Cheers from Australia kindest Regards Dan 👍

Hi Wade. Stumbled upon your channel. Watched about 5-6 of your videos over about a month and decided I needed to subscribe. Your content is excellent and your video quality and editing is awesome. I’m trying to learn for my current channel and watching you set the bar high gives me something to shoot for. I also enjoy that you have fishing, too on your channel. We do a lot of that up here in the Pacific NW. Take care and keep up the great work. Jeff Hale.

I shoot soft lead (air dried) while practicing for duty and home defense. Without buffer my Remington 870's get lead build up in the bores pretty fast. Your Alox and graphite coating does help a little though, but I still need buffer. (Our issue rounds are Federal Law Enforcement Tactical Flitecontrol 9 pellet OO Buckshot, (it originally was 8 pellet) copper shot, buffer and that wonderful Flitecontrol Wad and leaves a much cleaner bore.) Do they make that Flightconrol wad available as a component?

Why wait for the data? Am the only one who puts a laser pointer where the gun is going to be, aiming down range, and just center a target every 50 feet out to the maximum distance I want to test? Get a pattern at every distance you want with just one shot, and you get real consistency because the other shells might have something different going on that will change the pattern.

Great vid! I have a question, but I kind of feel it was already answered in your video here. Does buffer increase the pressure of loads? I know it is a debated subject atleast, but seeing you use identical loads and get similar velocity etc... it seems as though it had little to no impact with or without the buffer. I'm a 20 guage shooter and am sick of not having buckshot options available, or available at all at the moment really. Plus, I want some buck and ball and "pumpkin ball" shells and they just arent available for 20 guage. I will make my own! I am about to load atleast 500 buckshot shells for my 20 guage and am considering the buffer now. Having to factor in increased pressures etc would steer me away from using it, but I feel the science behind it makes sense and would personally like to buffer my buckshot. If course extensive testing will take place on my part with MY gun to see what works best... I just wonder if I need to cut back my powder or anything on the buffered shells to be safe? I appreciate any further info, if you can. I fully understand the questions come at ya like a machine gun, Haha. Thanks for another informative video sir! Jim Brown @bonezcustoms on IG

I know that the buffer does raise the pressures some, but in the case of these loads, it appears to be minimal... it may also greatly depend on the type of buffer used! I know that the pressures spike higher when I am using the Precision spherical buffer.

Let me get this straight he's starting at 50 m which is basically 150 ft and moving back from there? What is he shooting, a 28 inch barrel with a full choke? The impression I got was most of the people here are looking for cooking up some up close and personal defensive rounds, or am I just projecting my expectations and desires on the channel?
