That 'I love you' was also a callback to earlier this season when Cassie said to Spike "someday she'll tell you". It has been wonderful to follow you through this journey. Love you guys. See you in Angel s5.

That's the thing. Buffy did love Spike. Maybe not in the way she loved Angel but she did. That's how Whedon instructed SMG to act in that scene.

You don’t hear more about it because we’ve protected you from it for years lol. Spike and Buffys ending is widely talked about within the fandom. The way it’s written kind of changes the way you feel about spike. It’s his final act of redemption. He did this because it’s the right thing to do. Not to get anything from Buffy.

It’s funny that Giles says that there is a hell mouth in Cleveland and in The Wish, If Buffy never came to Sunnydale, she would have been in Cleveland lol

24:45 Xander's wording was a defense mechanism for dealing with his grief. It was also an insult to Andrew. Andrew nods in agreement that Anya dying to save his life was a stupid thing to do. It also tells Xander that Andrew understands Xander's grief.

I get that we would want all of our characters to get grand acknowledged deaths but that's not how wars are. I feel like there is something beautiful but also tragic about Anya's death. It was so human. In the end Anya ended up becoming one of those "stupid" humans she was always so exasperated with - always trying to make the world better. I'm glad we got that little talk with her and Andrew last episode to emphasize that.

And now we finally get to the moment with the emotional connection that *truly* gets the Spike/Buffy relationship to a place that makes so many fans love them and their connection... It's funny when new people come into the series knowing that Spuffy is a ship that people root for, because it is so toxic and terrible for such a long time that it leaves them going "This? Really? You're rooting for *this*?" and only now does it all make sense narratively and emotionally. In hindsight, it's easy to love Spuffy earlier because you know where it's going. The first time around, if you've only heard vague things about them getting together, I think it leaves people confused for, like, most of the series.

Xander's whole "that's my girl, always doing the stupid thing" was in response to Andrew saying "she died saving my life." It's another Xander using humor to cope with loss as in his opinion saving Andrew was a stupid thing for Anya to do. It's in character for him to say but the humor is so subtle in this context that it is easy to miss.

Angel cursed with a soul Spike fought and earned his soul…

Here's some food for thought: Spike wore the amulet, making him the big hero and completing his journey, but... Who gave Angel that amulet again? Oh yeah. The bad guys. Wolfram and Hart played Angel, Buffy, and Spike in order to eliminate Sunnydale [a huge center of mystical energy], destroy the First's army [possibly to make themselves the only major power player...the word monopoly comes to mind], and kill the prophesied vampire with a soul [despite possibly not knowing there was more than one]. So, in retrospect, Wolfram and Hart is the ultimate Buffyverse big bad...on both shows.

I love how Buffy's last words for the entire series was "I love you. Spike."

Actually, Buffy did love Spike. It's been confirmed by Whedon. "Love him when you say you love him. And love her when you say she doesn't". That was his advice for SMG and James Marsters. Don't think she was in love with him but she finally accepted that she did love him. That's why she smiles right before she says it, and then tears up as she realises she's accepted it too late.

A lot of people feel like Anya was done dirty. I appreciated Andrew's tribute to Anya, spinning a positive story about her heroically saving his life, rather than the truth of her being cut down unprepared from behind.

I am SO going to miss watching you guys react to Buffy! Your videos are one of the highlights of my week. I totally get what you’re saying about Anya: I think the writers had in mind for someone to just die senselessly (because that’s how these things play out IRL), and Anya kind of drew the short straw. It sucks - it would have been nice, for example, if she used her magic knowledge to help Willow do the spell - but I can understand the writing choice. And I also agree with the beauty of that moment between Buffy and Spike. The whole season, and especially the last few episodes, have really brought a lot of depth and subtlety to their relationship, and big props to the writers and actors for that.

I think Spike saying “No you don’t, but thanks for saying it” was more about Spikes own insecurities about Buffy not loving him, rather than Buffy’s actual feelings. She definitely loved Spike, that was her finally accepting how she felt and being honest.

Everytime I see someone get to the end of this series it always bring back those old feelings of my first time experiencing it. After everything they all went through, all the pain, all the teard, all the laughs, all the smiles all led up to this moment where they can choose what they want to do. They aren't carrying the burden of the responsibility of the world anymore. Whatever happens next is whatever they want.

"I thought this was a sort of romantic image, the two of them. We actually did it with real fire, but their hands were all gelled up and you could tell, so this was added in CGI and it looks beautiful. I thought it was a nice comment on their relationship. what i love about the spike buffy moment is, she could have been telling the truth and told him she loved him because he was gonna die and she wanted to finally admit it and he simply didnt believe her, but thanks her for trying to give him a happy death, or the way mackenzie described it. Just saying it to make him happy and him knowing its a lie, but thanking her for it anyways the fact that she got teared up in a Spike scene...omg xdd

Even though Anya would hav deserved a more heroic death, it is more realistic this way. In a war you don't get the proper send off. I would have liked to see a better reaction from Giles when Buffy answers his question "What did this?" with "Spike".If Giles' plan to kill Spike in Lies my Parents Told Me had succeeded, maybe everybody would be dead by now... I also feel like they brushed over the whole "throw Buffy out of the house"-thing too fast. They never even talked about it. Buffy came back and they were all acting like it never happened and all was good.

Can't believe this is the series finale, it's been a great journey, roller-coaster, MacKenzie and Kyle, I still get the same feeling when it aired 18 years ago, soo many amazing/sad, every potential slayer becomes a slayer is still awesome and shocking, soo cool that Buffy came up with this decision, Spike, Anya and Amanda dying soo sad 😥😥 may they all RIP, the Angel/Buffy reunion was soo sweet, but I still love Spike, and Buffy telling Spike she loves him, while holding his burning hand, is still one of the most iconic moments for me, Joss confirmed that she meant it, that she loves him, also I heard that Spike's drawing of Angel on the punching bag was drawn by Joss Whedon, also seeing Angel again is amazing, seeing Angel and Spike soo jealous of each other is funny and awesome, David and James are both incredible actors.

The last one, the end of a journey. T-T I cried so much during the Buffy finale. That speech at the end is still one of the best ever given on television. Are you ready to be strong? Not me crying during this reaction. xD

Buffy was funadmentally important to my introduction to the internet. One of the earlier things I did on the internet was end up being a mod on the UK Buffy forums, Ive certainly not talked about any other show as much.

The last word Buffy says in the series is "Spike"

If you think about it, if Connor was never born, he would've never banged Cordy, to have Jasmine, so she'd be defeated, so Angel and Co would take over Wolfram and Hart, so that Angel would have the resources to get the amulet, so Buffy could give it to Spike to bring down the First Evil.

This is one of the best episode in all of the Slayerverse....and one guaranteed to make me cry. And if Kyle reads this....you're cookie dough 💗

I also love that final moment with Buffy and Spike. She actually does love Spike after all he's done for her and what he's become, but yeah not in the way he loves her. But I don't think it's a lie to tell him she loves him. Just as it wouldn't be a lie for her to say that to Xander if he were in that position (I understand how different the dynamics are, but still she has love for Spike). Anya is my favorite character after Buffy and I know a lot of fans are disappointed with how she was killed. My only beef is with her dying at all. I never expected an actual heroic demise for her, but I'm glad Andrew was able to use his storytelling skills to give her that for Xander. The metaphor of Buffy sharing her power with the world in such a triumphant manner is amazing. I'll always say that 5x22 was actually a better series finale (that episode is beyond amazing), but I'm so, so glad we got to get to this moment after getting that one.

I agree the music in this episode is fantastic. The song during the final battle *chills* every time. All of the Buffy soundtracks are amazing including Christophe Beck's instrumental soundtrack.

It's been so fun re-watching this series with you two. I enjoyed your insights and I felt the feels with you. I read that Sarah and James had a hard time getting the right tone for their final scene and Joss really had to coach them to show a loving moment. Joss thought he got the right expression from Sarah finally, but she said she wasn't feeling it. Which is perfect because it allows various interpretations from the audience - even differing between repeat viewings. Some are steadfast that Buffy loves Spike then, especially since that's how Joss intended it, and that can be beautiful. Others believe it was more like an expression of forgiveness and that Spike had the wisdom to see it wasn't love, but he was fully reciprocating the acceptance of Buffy and loved her regardless. Which is so poignant. If they'd had more time together, after a few years of Buffy getting baked (lol) and Spike continuing to mature/find himself independently of Buffy's shadow, then I could wholeheartedly believe in them loving each other. Not a fan of the regressive direction Angel season 5 took Spike's character, but eh, I never really watched that show anyway. ;)

I was in 7 th grade when this show premiered and I was obsessed from the beginning. I love watching other people watch this series with the same passion and sense of humor 🤘🏻 You guys rock. Seriously;)

Buffy jumped off the bus without the Scythe. Did she leave it on the roof of the bus? lol. I made this comment elsewhere, but from during the end scene, Faith walks from left to right in the background as if metaphorically trying to find her place among the Scoobies, only to eventually find her place at Buffy's right hand; Buffy's only equal and second-in-command. Buffy finally found her peace and Faith finally found the validation and the position she's always wanted - to be close to Buffy.

In "Showtime", when Buffy said "I always find a way"...that's when it it really hit me what an icon she was. Such a truly inspiring character and it was a an amazing experience watching her evolve over the years. I want to say thanks to Kyle and McKenzie. The last couple of years have been shit for all of us. Losing myself in my favorite youtube accounts has honestly been like therapy for me, and Fan Theory has DEFINITELY been among my favorite channels! Looking forward to watching you grow.

I know its only a little thing but the throwback to the four of them in the corridor wasnt actually the end of the 1st episode because that ended on the cliffhanger of Buffy in the crypt with Luke - it's actually at the end of The Harvest which is episode 2

there were two spin offs that almost happened. 1. spike and faith. thats why we get a few good scenes between them towards the end, the producers were testing the waters and seeing how they got along, but Eliza decided to say no to it and focus on a movie career so it didn't happen. 2. the Giles spin off 'Ripper' was going to be old man Giles talking about his young life as Ripper and would focus on that... don't know why it didn't end up happening but as far as I know nothing was ever shot. for both it's a shame they never happen, would have been awesome to see :(

Last episode of BtVS 😢 I think Buffy asking Angel outright what was so great about their relationship is her putting a stop to any issues they have always had in the past because she is realizing it wasn't great. I think Willow being validated would be dangerous because as of her nifty line and Kennedy praising her as a goddess, that is the first time Willow has been trustworthy with magic. The First exists as long as evil is somewhere in the universe. That is how I see it. Unkillable. Looking at Spuffy from S2x03-S7x22, I believe Buffy does love Spike at this point, but it is too new on her side to be believed by Spike. She started realizing it in S5 (and he was also soulless at that point), but then she became depressed over her death/resurrection before Spike received a soul and she, during S7, realized her feelings all over again for Spike with a soul instead of without one. Buffy did love him, but only said it because there wouldn't be another chance to do so. Actions scream louder than words when it comes to that emotion. And her actions say that, for her, it is true, but new, as well as something she herself is still processing because it is no longer that of a teenager who just assumes being horny and in a relationship means so, thus back to why she asks Angel what was so great about the Bangel romance. She spares Angel the truth in outright saying she loves Spike, but then tells Angel the truth in that "[Spike's] in her heart." Which is further along and more healthy than Buffy has ever been in terms of romance. Not to mention Spike doesn't want Buffy to die and she is the type of person who might have stayed if he didn't tell her she didn't love him. Xander and Anya's romance never felt like he cared about her the way he always claimed to. Watching Anya over the seasons I believe she learned to love him despite his issues, where as he never seemed invested in anything other than being in a relationship. Which is why I think his words to Andrew weren't as sweet as they would have been if he did care the way he claimed. I've never heard that Anthony Stewart Head shot episodes of Ripper before. Faith was supposed to get one also, but Eliza Dushku chose to do _Tru Calling_ instead. Most of the plotlines that were going to be in those failed to greenlight shows were put into the comics.

I know Buffy had a plan, but these übervamps are tough even against slayers. I can't believe they didn't wear any kind of protective gear and deck themselves out in an arsinol of weapons. Especially for the non-slayer folks fighting the monks with sharp weaponry.

Buffy doesn't want to leave him, but she shakes it off, & heads out of the Hell mouth, & jumps to the already driving away school bus... Kile & McKenzie, Now Once more with feeling has come full cycle. Circle & for all the Characters, now we realize, each songs true fatalistic messages, we can go back to those moments, & catch the down fall of each Character's sad arcs, & meaning, up to Chosen's Finally. Way back then, the Writers knew, how they planned out the end of the show... Buffy now has the revaluation that she is no longer the 2nd to only Slayer anymore, & leave it to the First, to have given her the idea on how to remedy the One in every Generation, Slayer line. Spike too, tells Buffy she's the One. Buffy states to him, I don't want to be the One...🤦🏼‍♀️🙍🏼‍♂️💗 Spike also knows what he is willing to do, to help for his past, Evilles, he's done, & for the young woman he has truly grown to respect, admire & care about, after getting his Soul. & Finally get's to Destroy Sunnydale, in the process, & make one last attempt, to make the Sunnydale sign fall, into the Crater, before everyone. Anya's death was rather understated, when it actually happened was over really quickly and even the shot of her corpse was not there for long. 19:34 Well, he did say he would surprise her! I've not read the comics, so have no idea what happens in canon. In my head Faith and Wood go to Africa to find slayers, Xander becomes a watcher and starts a slayer training school in Cleveland.

It's hard to believe this show is over. It makes me even more excited to see the end of Angel. I've loved every minute of these reactions. Mackenzie's theories are entertaining and more times than not surprisingly accurate and Kyle gives just enough of a hint of what's going on to help her make those theories. Keep up the great work and I'll see you when the Angel reactions return!

Xander saying it was stupid was a shot at Andrew. Also Andrew lying about Anya being courageous and Xander not calling him out on it said a lot.

I love the cookie monologue. It tells that it might be the ending of this show but she is still so early in her life. Still finding out who she is and that's okay. I don't know if I know any other show with a better ending - I just love it!

One thing that I always hated about the finale, was that there wasn't any build up to Willow casting the spell that made all potentials into slayers. Buffy just said to do it and Willow did. It literally comes out of nowhere. Now compare that to season two's finale, where Willow casts the spell to reensoul Angel. It's a 5 month process. First Buffy says to Jenny to curse him again, but before Jenny can bring Buffy to her uncle, Angelus has killed him. Then Jenny creates a whole computer algorithm to translate the text and using the Orb of Thesula. This gets the shopkeeper killed by Drusilla and then Angelus kills Jenny right after she translates the curse but before she could tell anyone. When the gang finally does find the translation, Kendra is killed and the gang gets their butts kicked. Then Willow tries again and it finally works but Buffy still has to kill him. Now compare that to the season 7 finale. Buffy out of nowhere just says this is going to happen and it does.

Anya has said several times throughout the show that staying and fighting evil instead of running is "stupid." She even did so in the penultimate episode.

I always found the send of of Spike was one of the best and the way he says is so good acting too. Cause you can feel it at least in my opinion. I also found the finding of the axe (at least for me) and so on a bit like a deus ex machina.

I think at the end everyone is just kind of regrouping. More mourning/processing will happen as they move on. They still have to find a hospital ect. But they at this point take a second to look and see if they completed their goal. This is their counting the ducks and being sure that they succeed. Like I can't imagine they (especially Xanxer and Giles) don't mourn Anya more but they just got out of near certain death.

Thank you both so much for this. I've followed these videos going all the way back to the days of Kyle and Lauren. Been a Buffy fan for over twenty years and I've loved revisiting the show along side you. Looking forward to finishing Angel with you next. Now if we can only get Passion of the Nerd to work faster!

I only found this channel while I was looking for Buffy reacts in the peak of pandemic boredom and ended up watching the vast majority of your reactions and having a thoroughly great time. I have no Idea how you missed all the signs on how Buffy was so in love with Spike since S6 but somehow you did I mean, I get some people not liking it, but not seeing it is a whole different thing 😄

Hit or miss episode, medium good as it has a lot to tie up. Of note, the cookie-dough speech; waiting for the right moment is the enemy of movement. Also, the Buffy character's self-destructive taste in men on full parade.

Willow was an amazing character - but the handling of her spell was silly. It had been a prevailing theme for the past 2 seasons that magic extracted a heavy toll on the user and I think it should have been written that Willow needed to willingly sacrifice herself in order to cast a spell of that power. The emotional impact of that would have blown away the loss we felt for Spike & Anya.

Something I wanted to know for years, if I ever interact with any of the "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" producers, I want to ask them this question if the show never left The WB, would this finale, be exactly the same or would it have been different? Rumor and Innuendo: Sarah Michelle Gellar's contract was set to end in Season 7, regardless of what network "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" was on and SMG wasn't interested in extending her contract. I honestly think the majority of the cast were ready to move on as well, I believe the narrative over the years, SMG wanted the series to end, but really a lot of people were ready to call it a day. "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" was not a simple show to shoot.

The night of "Chosen" when Buffy got stabbed, my first thought, I will never forget this: "Not again!" :0)

I always felt anya should've died protecting an unknown potential because she called them cannon fodder. For her to risk her life for unknown human after spending seasons trying to understand what it means to be human...would've been great.♥️ Especially considering all the blood on her hands...she probably did need to die. Her and Spike. Getting their hero end would've been lovely

Great finale. Nice to see a lovely reaction to a beautiful moment of TV from my past. You two have Slayed over the seasons together and I just wanted to say thanks. Anya's death, I think, is a callback to the comment earlier in this season that there are always casualties in war and they're almost always just an end to someone's story, there's no fanfare or poignant moment as someone cries walking away from the body - war is cold and un-heroic. That's the counterpoint to the heroic death of Spike: Anya's sacrifice is no less important and even more sad but it seems more real (and so makes us uncomfortable - which I think is super important in a show that always tried to show that war is not Glory (sic) but actually something harsh and thankless). *hugs* and thanks again!

As for the Giles spin-off series, I don't know anything about a television series but if you keep reading the comic, Giles has something happen to him and that causes a Angel/Fate/Giles spin-off comic. There's a Buffy continuation after the last episode of Buffy and there's a continuation of Angel after its last episode. They mix and merge and eventually come to the Angel/Fate/Giles spin-off comic.

Okey I've already written a lot but just two more things. I think the fitting final summary of the impact of Buffy the Vampire Slayer came from Willow in the end. When Xander says we saved the world she adds: "We changed the world." Finally I what to thank you both for inspiring me to finally go back and watch the whole series in entirety, revisit the episodes I either had watch or only partially watched years before with fresh eyes, and watch all of Angel for the first time. It's been more than an amazing look back at my own youth to see what's changed and what's said the same both in genre fiction and the real world it springs from. You guys have been wonderful in getting me through some hard times and providing lots of cool ideas to geek out about. I'm enjoying a lot of other reaction filled youtube channels right now and if you guys really were one of the firsts, you should defiantly be proud.
