I noticed how they are all talking about lot of things and she doesn't say a word. If we check, her last words are: - Spike! (when she saw him) - I love you - Spike (she replied to Giles) and that's it. From the moment when they were still fighting till the very end. Beautiful.

BTVS really nailed the message of its finale. After years of feeling so alone because of her calling, Buffy finally finds her place beside others like her... Not by changing herself, but by lifting others up so they can be strong like her. :')

I love the ending metaphor. But it does have a bit of fridge horror when you realize Buffy hated having her choice taken away and yet she only asked about a dozen girls if they wanted to be demon warriors. The other 1'000+ girls have no idea what's happening and never asked for it.

@@kjh4496 The comics that most fans agreed are terrible and not canon? Doesn't really matter either way. The comics came in a decade later. The show ended with a pretty terrible choice on Buffy's part. The whole show was about it being unfair for Buffy/Kendra/Faith to have been chosen by some stuffy old men. But then in a single day, Buffy and Willow call more Slayers than had been active in the last 2'000 years.

Spike's "no, you don't" resembles how Buffy always answered his "I love you" with "no, you don't". Creators said that Buffy did mean it, but sadly her confession was too late for him to believe in it.

Remember when the Shadowmen offered Buffy more power and she refused. She later told Willow about it and that she thinks she made a mistake. Turns out Buffy was right once again. Getting more power for herself was not the answer and would only have caused her to fight alone, as all slayers in the past have done. No, Buffy decides to share her power, which is the exact opposite of the slayer mythos, and that leads to victory. One final great Buffy speech to end the show: Buffy: "So here's the part where you make a choice: What if you could have that power... now? In every generation, one Slayer is born... because a bunch of men who died thousands of years ago made up that rule. They were powerful men. This woman is more powerful than all of them combined. So I say we change the rule. I say my power... should be our power. Tomorrow, Willow will use the essence of the scythe to change our destiny. From now on, every girl in the world who might be a Slayer... will be a Slayer. Every girl who could have the power... will have the power... can stand up, will stand up. Slayers... every one of us. Make your choice. Are you ready to be strong?"

The callback with Giles saying, "The earth is definitely doomed" to The Harvest when he says, "The earth is doomed" was fantastic. Only eight months for seven seasons. I remember commenting how fast uploads were happening, but forgot about the speed Elie was going. I wonder how many people understand the Dawson reference outside of - possibly - what show it comes from. Some people see the cookie dough speech as a future possibility of Buffy and Angel. I see it as her officially telling Angel, it is over, and that she is good with that. It is part of her she is a starting her grown up phase of life, and has accepted that she was struggling with it the in S1-6 coming of age part of the series. She is not a child like she was when they were together and she not only has accepted it, but Angel needs to, also. I was always sad that instead of Buffy face-to-face with herself as The First, they could have brought back Bianca Lawson as Kendra as The First to do the: "One woman in all the world..." speech as Kendra was such a by-the-book slayer. The DVD audio commentary talks about the writer, story-wise, sacrificing the strength of the ubervamps for the metaphor of the slayer power being shared. Good thing Giles and Wood didn't kill Spike. Angel would have needed to wear the medallion and what would his show have been like with him dead or with the idea in his head that W&H gave him said medallion and the keys to running the LA branch of W&H if he assumed they intended to kill him? Buffy's final word: "Spike." I believe Buffy did love Spike, but being so new at knowing it herself, and Spike not wanting to risk her staying, decided to tell her she didn't. The First's plan is no longer a possibility, but The First cannot be killed as it is evil because evil exists. And after AtS S5, _After the Fall_ before BtVS S8 start the comic book series.

Buffy. Faith and Kendra ending the show together would have been wonderful. Even if Kendra was just a dead vessel for The First to occupy. I mean they were gonna do that with Tara. It’s only because Benson disagreed why they never did it and so chose Cassie to be a representation of The First to show up for Willow in replacement and on behalf of Tara. Could have definitely used Kendra for this instead if Biana Lawson was interested.

I’d also add how when the core-four walk off, each of them go their own ways in reverse order of us meeting them (we met buffy, then xander, then willow, then giles) and in that moment giles turns away to say his line, then willow goes to her area, then xander and finally we are left with buffy - our chosen one…

At the end, Spike was who gave Buffy her fire back. "I touch the fire, and it freezes me." When they were holding each other's hand as everything was collapsing, their hands were in flames. He ignited that spark in her that had been missing since she came back from the beyond. She was feeling everything at that moment. To top it off, her last four words on the show were "I love you.... Spike. " The "I love you" was in hellmouth, and the "Spike" was when Giles asked who did this ❤ -Lol, this was the 3rd time that Spike has nocked over the "Welcome to Sunnydale" sign, lol. (Schools Hard, Lovers Walk, and then series finale). Then this was also the 3rd time that Buffy had a hand in destroying a school, haha. (The 1st was the school gym at her old school in L.A., 3rd season of finale with blowing up the school at graduation and then here).

Xander was scared of becoming like his father. He could have channeled those fears into a determination to be a better husband for Anya and to create a better family that what his parents provided for him. Instead he ran, caused Anya the very pain he wanted to avoid, denied himself the family relationship he wanted and squandered what time he had left with the woman he loved.

Anya murdered people for 1'000 years and had a soul the whole time. Sorry to say, but she hadn't earned her happy ending. She never actually feels bad about the 1'000 years and actually brags about her actions. Anya only feels bad when she kills a dog/innocent people when she gets turned back into a demon. People are saying Anya didn't deserve that? She kind of did, it was comeuppance for her 1'000 years of murder.

Well done Elie for completing the whole series a really good piece of work, quite incredible to have done it so fast and so well, and also doing Angel at the same time, you deserve great credit for you efforts. This incredible show deserves the admiration it still receives and you did it proud. Chosen was a marvelous finale which was hard to achieve after the brilliant The Gift which, which I believe was the greatest of all episodes. Angel has of course returned with the mysterious amulet he got from Lilah in the Angel show, and gives it to Buffy saying 'it is to be worn by a Champion'. Spike proving to be possibly the most important character in the show due to the prophecy of the Vampire with a soul who would play a major role in the final battle, it was him who would finally destroy the Hellmouth and save them all. His character arc was incredible, giving his life and very soul to save them all. When Buffy says she loves him at the end I believe she does mean it, all Spike/William ever wanted was to be loved, that's why when Cassie told him before she died in series 7 ' one day she will tell you' it was so important for Spike to actually hear those words from the girl he truly loved making his existence complete so he could die at peace. Once again well done on completing the show and your hours of work are much appreciated. Look forward to more Angel reactions, a show which in many episodes actually surpassed Buffy The Vampire Slayer. You really did ''slay it'. There is only one thing to do now Elie, hit that rewind button and go back to E1 S1 Welcome To The Hellmouth (you should really watch the unaired Pilot too with the different Willow actress, it is really good), and watch Darla set the ball rolling on this amazing show, you will love it even more. Thanks again for your brilliant reactions, and of course it is not over as you have the brilliant Angel S5 to complete.

"She'll tell you. Someday, she'll tell you." Season 7 Spuffy gives me all the feels. Also, the "make your choice" speech makes me cry every time. I listen to it whenever I need a boost in confidence. We all have some slayer power within us, if we choose to. "Can stand up? WILL stand up. Make your choice - are you ready to be strong?" I'm glad Andrew survived, he really grew as a person this season. I think he's underrated AF. He earned his place in the Scoobies when he chose to stay and fight knowing he was the most likely to die, in my opinion. Will you be reading the Buffy/Angel comics when you finish Angel Season 5? Most people don't consider them canon, but I personally think some of them are interesting.

Andrew was definitely the most improved! I think it makes sense for both arcs that Anya died instead of Andrew. Hers is complete. She's lived a 1000 years and here is here moment of death, a moment of unselfish heroics. And now Andrew gets a 2nd chance, gets to continue on the heroics.

I have a lot of feelings about chosen. I really do love it a lot. So many finales are so unsatisfying, but Buffy really pulled it off and shined this episode. Buffy’s eternal struggle the whole show has been that her calling has always made her feel alone and by making all the potentials slayers, by sharing her power, it frees her from her burden and empowers the people around her. As annoying as the potentials have been all season, they’re an essential part of the storyline. Season 7 has been all about power and how it’s used and what it means and who has it, now all the potentials do and I just think that’s really special. Also spike made the Sunnydale sign fall down for a third time and that’s funny.

All the callbacks in the episode were so great: Angel stepping back into the shadows the same way he did when he left the series at the end of season 3 The whole scene in the hallway where Giles says "The earth is definitely doomed" like he said "the earth is doomed" at the end of The Harvest. Xander's reference to Mini-Golf - callback to the end of When She was Bad when Xander suggested they play Mini Golf - which they did in Ted. 'The whole secret Agent look" referencing Xander's costume in Fear Itself (and bringing to mind Xander's Halloween costume from season 6, where he wore an eyepatch as part of his pirate costume - which was the same thing Larry wore when Xander fought him in season 2's Halloween") Spike knocking down the Sunnydale sign The Cleveland Hellmouth from The Wish. Even Andrew's brother Tucker and Anya's Bunnies. As much as Seasons 6 and 7 were, at least for me, a let down after season 5, this finale really does everything it needs to do. Also, Trogdor the Burninator is an actual thing...search for it on YT and check out all his majesty.

You did a great job with this series! I’ve enjoyed going on the journey with you. And I’m totally there for your rewatch. A few of my thoughts. 1. I agree with you wishing this had been a two part finale. It was a good finale, but they had so much to wrap up some stuff got rushed. 2. Anya’s death - Josh Whedon has admitted he fumbled that. He was going for that feel that in war sometimes death is quick and not dramatic and you don’t have time to process so at the time he thought it would be a good idea to demonstrate with Anya’s death. But he’s since regretted realizing she was such an important character she deserved more. 3. When Buffy tells Spike she loves him, Joss directed SMG that when she says it to Spike that she means it, but he directed James that when she tells him, he doesn’t believe her. 4. Did you notice the Welcome to Sunnydale sign falls down when the bus stops and the look at the crater of the town? Call back to Spike. First time we see him, his car knocks down a Welcome to Sunnydale sign. Second time in season 3 he knocks down another sign. And this final time he played a huge part in destroying the town and the hellmouth, so he’s symbolically knocked it down for third and last time.

The choice is if you want to fight or not. Before for generations, the world was on one girl shoulders. Now that ALL of the potentials have the power, they can actually choose to keep living a "normal" life or fight the fight with the others if they wanted to. They wouldn't have to be forced into it as an obligation due to the fact that there is no one else but you that can do it. Now that there are thousands around the world, it makes it easier for some who don't want to be a part of it cause they know that there are others out there who can and want to. Throughout the whole show, Buffy always struggled with the fact she could never have some kind of a normalcy in her life and balance because of her being the only slayer (Kendra killed, Faith turned bad and then went to prison) so for her this is a relief of pressure and thats why it ended with her just with a smile.

I don't know if it works because everyone argues over what happened between them. I do love that she spent her last night on earth(for all they know) with him though.

The First will never die as it's something different from what we have seen until now. It's in the world since the beggining and even before of that. The First lost this war, but "it" didn't die. It's hard to explain what The First was representing.

Seasons 8 through 12 do address some of the issues you mention about consequences of calling all the slayers. There's around 2000 of them, a fraction of the potentials that were alive before Buffy was resurrected.

What a ride it's been! Thanks for taking us along with you! It's bittersweet to reach the end, isn't it? I look forward to the rewatch of the show. you'll definitely enjoy it. Spike and Anya are possibly my favorites. To lose them both! But if you look back at their conversations over the seasons, it makes sense. Especially their talk in season 6 when they talk about how they should have been dead centuries ago. Then having Anya talk with Anya about being willing to stay and fight like all of the stupid humans. I love this ending right where it is. Yes, the number of slayers will "lessen the importance" but that is kind of the point. Buffy not having it all on her shoulders anymore. I'm sure the story continues with all the new slayers in the comics, but I've always been so happy with the way this wraps up. What I love about Buffy's "I love you" to Spike could mean romance, it could mean as someone she cherishes. While Joss had his own goal for it, we are all allowed to interpret it as we will. I believe she did love him. What type of love, to me it doesn't even matter. Buffy and Spike had such a great arc. I think Spike had possibly the largest arc of any character in this show. It'll be fun to go back and rewatch all these characters from the beginning!

Great reaction Elie! Thanks for all your hard work this year - not quite sure how you've managed to finish the entire series in eight months, especially with all the work that goes into editing etc. but you did it! Would love to see you react to some of the other Buffy videos on KZfaq such as the making of OMWF and the Buffy dailies (the few that exist, anyway), for example.

“She’ll tell you….one day she’ll tell you”- Cassie I LOVED this finale….it was PERFECT from the original scoobies recreating the 2nd episode dialogue (really it was the 1st episode two parter)….too Buffy no longer being the only slayer. Only thing I HATED was them glossing over ANYAS DEATH as if she was an after thought like the potential slayers. NO!!! We’ve been with her since season 3….she definitely deserved a better send off than Xander joking about her death

Figures that the two greatest loves of Willow and Xander die just like that. No respect. No dignity. Just fridged. While Spike gets to die in a heroic self-sacrifice worthy of his character development. Tara and Anya. My poor loves. I’m so sorry.

I like the finale and especially Buffys smirk at the end. Finally some peace for her. But did you notice that Buffy didn’t even defeat the last and biggest villain of her own show herself? She was not the one to save the world in the finale. It was Willow and Spike! Sure the spell was Buffys idea, but without Willow making everybody a Slayer and Spike bringing the house down, Buffy and the others would have utterly failed and died. Also both weapons that were essential for the victory, the scythe and the amulet, were just kind of handed to them in the last episodes. Like I said, I like the finale in general and how it all went, but looking back at it I would have prefered for Buffy being the one to defeat The First. We spent 7 seasond building her up as "the One" and in the end, all she did was kick some Ubervamps around. Without Spike and the amulet, they would all have died down there.

It’s one of the reasons I dislike this season is that Angel brought something given to him from Wolfram Hart to save the world. I still don’t know how that makes any sense. No matter even what Willow did compares to that finishing move… so why does the evil law firm help?

Pulling power from within at critical moments that change a character forevermore will always be a much stronger statement for me than when that character has to rely on external sources of power to fight the good fight. Of course there’s nothing wrong with using what you can, whatever is at your disposal to draw power from. Energy is shared at the end of the day. But I just think it’s stronger when you don’t have to draw from anything and the source of power entirely comes from within instead. Power that has been gathered and accumulated through experience; pain, trauma, grief - hardship of all kinds. Physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. It’s a stronger statement because, to me , it means that reality is at your beckon call and not the other way around. You’re the one in control of that power because it’s truly yours. It hasn’t come from someone or something else. It’s drawn from the well of energy already there. Now Willow in Season 7 learns about the root system from the Devon Coven in England while she’s staying at Giles’ Westbury mansion: essentially rehabilitating herself from her Dark Willow evil trip in Season 6. Through the root system she learns that the Universe is all connected through it’s energy so a lot of her arc in Season 7 has to do with her drawing that energy from the Universe. Either to heal her injury in ‘Same Time, Same Place’ or to open a portal to another dimension in ‘Get It Done’ or to imbue herself with powers of a goddess through a mythical weapon; the Slayer Scythe in ‘Chosen’ in order to awaken all the Potential Slayers. And it’s all well and good and certainly consistent with what she learns about the root system. How the Universe is dependent on it’s physics to maintain and evolve itself. And I do very much like that endgame for her…. But I feel like it would have been a stronger statement if she used the power she accumulated throughout the whole show to do all this rather than channelling the power from somewhere else in the Universe: using conduits instead of just transferring the power that already existed inside of her to whatever it was she was trying to heal or open or awaken. And maybe she does do that to a degree, but for me it really isn’t clear when or where. They really miss the mark on explaining how she’s able to do anything she does in Season 7. As I said, I don’t have a problem with it as such because that is what she learns from the Devon Coven. But I would have just liked that stronger statement of the power within. Plus I feel it would have really done wonders for her own mental health. Those insecurities of not feeling worthy enough might have been resolved if the power used to do all the things she does was all her own and not from external sources. You could say that her own power wasn’t great enough to achieve that feat. To that I would have to say I disagree because the power she accumulated throughout the show, and especially her trip as Dark Willow, was very much akin and equalled to the power of a goddess. It was just used selfishly and malevolently rather than used to fight the good fight. Energy is energy at the end of the day. It is neither “positive” or “negative” inherently. Only how it’s used or what it’s intended for determines that. So I think it would have been very possible for Willow to convert the power for evil to power for good. They didn’t do that ultimately of course but they most definitely could have - root system philosophy included.

Even though the comics season 8 etc. are cannon because Whedon was involved. But this ending actually opens up for a fantastic sequel potential! Like, Disney (rather than rebooting) could literally make a new show that continues and could even bring in SMG and Hannigan etc. as a guest too but we could focus on other slayers. If nothing else, there is Fray which was a one shot graphic novel but it was soo great, having that as a TV show would rock!
