Yeah not the first show to do something like that. 90210 really did it in spades though. Season one they were sophomores in HS and then the show got great ratings then they were oh shit we only have like two more seasons to go before we have to dump them off to college already so they just had them go back to next year as sophomores again. No explanation ever given LOL.

I get the feeling the underworld is a metaphor for the penal system. Never getting out of there, the absence of hope, not being permitted to fight back, somewhat pointless labor, your life standing still while the rest of the world carries on, removal of identity - these are very reminiscent of some of the themes in Shawshank Redemption.

No clue if that's deliberate, but those who played old Civilization would understand. See, in Civ 1 you play against a bunch of other nations, each headed by a computer-simulated leader, who was some kind of a historical figure - Napoleon, Stalin, etc... and yes, India was led by Gandhi. Each of those had a predetermined level of aggressiveness, and for Gandhi it was 0. But also, under certain conditions, every opponent's level of aggressiveness went down 1 point. So, Gandhi's was now -1, which, because of integer overflow, became 255. So, Gandhi would go crazy aggressive, practically berserk. It was a bug, of course, but it proved to be so popular, that they deliberately kept it in version 2. So, yeah, Gandhi can go savage.

Joyce has a reason to be upset that Giles saw more of Buffy than she did since they came to Sunnydale. However, that is going to change.
@Buffy8Fan
@Buffy8Fan 9 күн бұрын
I feel like Joyce projects her guilt of onto blaming Giles so she doesn't have to deal with all the truth Buffy said of "you still haven't figured it out," her not knowing her daughter, and kicking her out. I get why Joyce is upset, but I feel it is all misplaced issues/guilt, also. Also, in the origin comic, movie, and script Joyce ignored her daughter and only started parenting because Buffy got in trouble for saving kids at her former school's dance and accused of the damage because she couldn't explain why she caused said damage. From the start of S1, Joyce has shown moments that prove she is only at that point learning how to parent for the first time. This is only a year and a half after the series premiere. Joyce should have sixteen years of experience at this point. She may love her daughter, but she has a ways to go before she catches up to where she should be on parenting. Best lines and moment: "Breaking into your office and going through your private files." "What's with all the sin?" "I'm Buffy, the vampire slayer. And you are?" "In case we die." And the moment Lily interrupts Ken's villain monologue by pushing him from the walkway. I never really thought the Ghandi joke was funny. Just odd. Different brand of humor, I guess.
@MB.543
@MB.543 9 күн бұрын
Joyce has her flaws, but this also isn't a normal parenting issue. I don't think it's fair to say she's just now learning how to parent. She's just now learning how to parent a teenager/young adult, and that's where her skills are lacking. Many parents struggle with their kids' teenager stages, and now she has to process and learn to accept the whole slayer element as well. Again, I'm not denying her shortcomings, I just think people give her too much criticism and not enough credit for the things she actually does do right.
@Buffy8Fan
@Buffy8Fan 9 күн бұрын
@@MB.543 SLIGHT SPOILERS THROUGH SEASON SIX. IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THROUGH THE END OF SAID SEASON, DO NOT READ. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. The origin stories (the movie, the movie's original script, and the comic [and if you don't watch/read those _Band Candy_ shows her origin stories were a more mature version of what _Band Candy_ high school was, also) show Joyce ignores her daughter in every aspect. Divorce and Buffy burning down the gym are the only things that seem to have changed that by the beginning of S1. I mentioned things she should already know that she brings up in S1. Little moments from telling a sixteen year old Buffy she needs to learn how to say no and that she is reading parenting books that told her that's what to do, being able to talk to Buffy about basic things without being "shaky on the dismount" (the parenting books are, at least, working if she knew she was said, "shaky on the dismount"), all the way to drinking while throwing her child out of the house. To me, these all show she has flaws, but said flaws should have been learned years ago. There is a difference between struggling as a parent/normal parenting flaws, and not knowing the basics after sixteen to eighteen years, to the point of it effecting her larger parenting skills because she's that behind the curve. Does Joyce love her daughter? Yes, and she does get better over the the first four seasons, but I also see the parenting she should have being inserted by the monks when Dawn showed up. In the Post Dawn era I see Joyce losing the (for use of a better phrase) Band Candy Parenting when Dawn was born AKA in her memories of before she was created, and Hank leaving the family then, as opposed to his little leaving arc in S1-S3. This is also why I think his arc of going off with his secratary isn't as out of place as some think. Others fans will, and have, seen it differently. But, I believe there is a basis for my theory, even if you have a completely different theory. Love seeing all the different theories about this show.

Mikey didn't remember, season 2 episode 1: ----- After killing The Master at the end of school in the last episode of season one, Buffy spends the summer with her Dad, Hank, in Los Angeles. The first episode of season two, "When She Was Bad," finds Buffy back in Sunnydale, ready to start her Junior year of High School. The problem is, she is still haunted by memories of The Master, and while she's working through her issues, she becomes distant with her friends, and even mean. And that distance puts those she cares about in danger. ----- Right at the start of the episode, Xander and Willow are out walking at night, playing "name the movie" based on quotes from movies, and talking about how it had been a pretty quiet summer. Hank had a conversation with Joyce about how Buffy seemed distant or moody or something like that while she was staying with him, and had this remark: ----- Hank: At least when she was burning stuff down I knew what to say. ----- It couldn't have been made more clear that the break between seasons was, in fact, summer break between school years. Come on Mikey, it's not like you're reacting to too many things! Oh, wait, maybe... 🤣 At least Joe and Mike pointed that out, and you were like "oh yeah!" 😁

Good start to Season3 . Many on point thoughts but a few reminders. The episodes have 3 levels in the storytelling. There is the entertainment with action ( correct on the improvement- more money), humor, and supernatural elements. The second is the journey of Buffy to becoming me a strong, independent, emotionally intelligent, and loving woman. The third level is the examination of philosophical dogmas and applications to life. What is right( moral) and wrong ( immoral) and who and what defines. Where does the individual freedom start and when does selfish pride take over. The collective consciousness versus the individual.. on and on with several episodes debating nihilism versus existential thought. Like this episode. The hammer and cycle are being used by the workers to do the work of their oppressors. The Collective gives no hope just the tools to do their work with no hope for improvement. It is Buffy, the individual, that takes the symbol, the tools of the State given to the serfs to work with, to use to destroy the oppression and leaders of the state. The underworld is the perfect workers state. It’s we’re all are equal, all have work, all have their needs taken care of , and live if they adhere to the State. Buffy rediscovers her individuality with one sentence, Hi, I’m Buffy The Vampire Slayer and you are? That’s the revolution of the individual versus the state. A classic debate is an equal world versus the individual. The Collective versus the Individual. This will be an examination for the show and critical to the growth of Buffy and the Monster that is the administrative structure that keeps girls like Buffy from becoming ( that word again) a strong independent women free from what she is expected to do by others. Welcome to the next level of the Buffyverse.

Anne is a terrific opener to a near flawless S3. At the start we can see the haphazard amateurish attempts by The Scoobies to patrol with Oz's awful attempt to throw the stake etc. Once we see Buffy as Anne the waitress, we know she can't continue like this and has to help people as is her vocation. Lily of course was in S2 and recognises Buffy, the two of them have a similar story. The part where Joyce blames Giles for Buffy's disappearance is interesting and very true to life where people blame others for their own actions trying to transfer the blame. Buffy of course comes through at the end freeing all the slaves in the Underworld. Some great little comedy moments with Xander and Cordelia again. A great ending with Buffy back home on the doorstep, where no words are needed just relief that she is back. I think we can see the fight sequences improve immensely in S3 onwards, you can now see the show has a much bigger budget with better cinematography and effects.

Malcom was messing with digital files. The implication is that he was deliberately changing the info as part of his corruption of the internet. We get a different birth year for Buffy in Nightmares. They’re basically what Earth was like in the Primordium Age(Giles talks about this in the beginning of S1 e2): a world where demons rule and humans are enslaved. But because we enter through a factory, there’s most likely an entire demonic city and world outside of this factory. When Buffy kills those first guards an alarm goes off and so we could assume outside help was gonna arrive soon. If at all possible try to watch the Buffy movie for the channel BEFORE S3E5. Honestly the earlier you see the movie the better. Ideally it is seen before S1E1 or at least before the invisible girl episode and especially before S1E12. Also before S2E22. But it still helps a lot for S3E5. Some people seem to feel that S3E5 comes a trace out of left field in some aspects and I don't know that you quite understand unless you've seen the movie first. The movie really, really shows who Buffy was before coming a Slayer. S2E22 only gave like a 4 second hint.

And instead of blaming Giles, maybe you could have used the last few months to learn from Giles and Buffy's friends just what Buffy is about, how many lives she's saved and, in fact, even the world. And how much she's suffered doing it. But that would mean learning just how deeply you'd cut her with that line. Lack of accountability much? Most people their senior year only need a few credits left to meet graduation requirements, and they fill most their class time up with study halls or electives. Since she was expelled at the end of the year, she probably already spent enough time in class to get the credits for the classes she took. Even if she missed the last semester of junior year, and failed for the semester.... I think it's a little strange that Buffy's name isn't, Elizabeth Anne Summers. Buffy, is traditionally short for Elizabeth. Apparently her mother didn't know that, and just named her Buffy. Either way, it appears that her name really is, just Buffy.

The Gandhi line always bugs me. I want it to be this: "Wanna see my impression of Gandhi?" *slays* "Gandhi?" "Yeah...but, I'm terrible at impressions."

The guy who tries to close the door on Buffy when she looks for Lily and kicks the door into him, was Jeff Pruitt, stunt coordinator. His wife was Sophia Crawford, Buffy stunt double. I was not a fan of this episode. I felt beat over the head with "despair." The Gandhi joke has always fallen flat. Ken was played by Carlos Jacot whom Joss ended up using a lot. Did you recognize him as the fed from the Firefly pilot?

My only problem with that episode is the hammer-and-sickle symbolism. Having lived for ten years in a country that plastered those on every surface, I'm still sick of it.

The hammer and sickle are used by Buffy to destroy the collective state. The tools were given to the workers to produce for the oppressors. Having Buffy use them is to show that the individual can take the tools of the state and use them for individual purposes. It’s the hammer and sickle used by the individual (Hi, I’m Buffy the Vampire Slayer and you are?) that helps Buffy overthrow the system and free individuals to become who they choose and not the collective. Like so many episodes, it’s about the journey of Buffy to become a free individual not subjected to a system or forced order,
