In this video I have a look at a customers Buick Enclave that had a customer complaint of a reallllly loud wheel bearing, object detection not working, no horn, NYSI, and a few other things. Let's see what it needs and get this lady and estimate and see if we get the job.

Anyone mad at that estimate is a dum dum cause that is cheap and his shop needs to make money to stay open. I know some places it would of been 1 hour diag each concern for diag easy or not and can't blame those places either as they all need to be profitable to stay in business. Running a shop is far from cheap and easy. And we all know the government likes there chunk of anything made. Very reasonable SMA

I assume it takes about $100 per hour to cover all that. But, how the dealerships justify their exorbitant charges is beyond me!
@utidjian

@@0rnery Most dealerships I have been into have all sorts of extra employees and a grander looking place than most brick-n-mortar or mom-n-pop type repair facility. All those extra people and amenities cost money and you, me, the customer pays for it. The taxes and mortgage or rent on the property is all paid for by the customer. There is not much magic or mystery to it if you have ever run something as simple as a lemonade stand at the end of your driveway or girl scout cookies or whatever. One might think that more people should understand this... (Business and Marketing have been the top college major in the USA for decades) but they don't or they forgot.

@@utidjian Hah! It would be one thing if the exotic Dealership experience yielded competent diagnosis & repairs. But, we see all too often, mom & pop shops get the job done correctly after Dealership fails, despite having specific tools and knowledge of how to repair their own products. And, they get it done for a fraction of the Dealership's price. Dealerships ought to be paying for their exorbitant overhead with car sales, not when their customers are between a rock and a hard place at the mercy of their shop.

I think many people underestimate the time a proper diagnosis takes, the expertise is what you are paying for. Anyone can write up a BS estimate that doesn't address the actual problems, or "Parts-Cannon" the customer with things they don't actually need. In fact that wheel bearing - most shops would have said "you need all four wheels done" and not bother with quoting just the one that is the problem. Good honest mechanic, great vid Eric as always!

A customer can always say no to an estimate and go to another shop, which is apparently what this customer did after getting the dealer's estimate. Eric's labor prices seem fair, he uses quality parts because he has to back them if they fail. He's upfront about diagnostic costs. I would love to have such an honest and fair mechanic to rely on. P.S. Sorry about Mrs. O's face, I hope she heals up real soon... =]

Don’t forget blinker fluid that they told her she needed 😂 I honestly think it’s a dealer as Eric mentioned she was taking it to. It’s the good old dealer scam where they keep her coming back for more money trick. They fix one thing and sabotage something else to fail for continued customer return for more business/ money. There is a lot of mechanics out there that do this to women mostly and a little bit to men who have no mechanical knowledge. Sad but so true on this one with women.

When I was first in business fixing RVs and mobile homes, I had a lot of people asking me to justify my hourly rate. They didn't want to hear that they were paying for experience or that I have bills to pay or that I'm in business to make a profit. Eventually, I just told them that if they didn't like it, that they didn't have to have me work on their units and they were free to look for someone else to do the job. After that, I never heard anything more about justifying costs! Apparently, there wasn't anyone else competent enough to do that kind of work.

Excellent upload! I'm always impressed with your methodical and patient diagnostic work. 🧐 The way you narrate as you go through the process really drives home the massive amount of experience and knowledge you have. This can only come through years of hands-on work combined with constant study and research of the ever-changing operations of modern automotive systems. There is no shortcut to this level of service. It takes 10's of thousands of hours of your life... And what is your time worth? It is TRULY our most valuable and precious commodity, as we have an ever-dwindling amount of it and it cannot be replaced once it is spent. NO ONE has the right to ask you to JUSTIFY your price for your time. If they do, then they have determined that your time has no value unless it can be 'justified '. That's arrogance and ignorance of the highest degree. I don't work for, or do work for, those kind of people anymore. My life and work has been the better for it ever since. 🙂 My motto: "This is the 'price' (estimate) I have put on my time. You are free to take it or leave it, but I will not 'give' you anymore of it explaining why." Thank you again for sharing. 🙏

My comeback was that you pay me for what I know, not how dirty I get or how much I do. Now I did go by the book for job hours. And truth be told, most of the time, the people who would complain usually worked on it first and couldn't repair the problem and should have been charged double because as we all know! you have to fix what they broke first.

It's very interesting to me to see the costs associated with this kind of diagnosis and repair. Thanks for sharing that info! The ''missing' fuse did seem a bit like a setup at first, but it all made more sense when it was disclosed that she'd had the thing at the dealer before bringing it to you. No doubt the previous diagnostician removed the horn fuse in order to test the security system and simply forgot to reinstall it. It would be very interesting to see a written quote from the dealer! Eric, my grandparents took their 2012 Escape to the dealer they bought it from quick lane center for just about everything. Then after one winter passed, and we hit some a/c weather the a/c wasn't working. So I pulled the under hood fuse cover off to discover no fuse in the a/c location. We bought fuses put it in, and the compressor kicked in a/c worked perfectly. They were setting them up for a complete 2k plus bill to overhaul the a/c. I know that this Quick Lane has a history of pulling fast one's on older people. I also know they told them that the wiper/turn signal stalk was the wipers stalling or falling to work properly. I did that myself, but it didn't seem to fix the issue. Sad thing is after my grandma passed away, and my grandpa had dementia we decided to sell it. We did some other maintenance items on it, cleaned it up, but the wiper situation seemed to have resolved itself because we drove it quite a bit in rainy weather with no issues. But I will say your use of the parts you pick are what you know. I totally agree with you 100 percent. You been doing this long enough to know what to buy so it doesn't bite you in the ass later. I would do the same thing for my customers. That's the reason your in business because you strive to be honest, fair, and give your customers the respect they deserve by using parts that are going to survive longer than most of the aftermarket crap out there. So if that's genuine oem parts that's what you do. I also like when you're able to save money if it is something that you can get used from your local pick your part. So keep up the excellent work, and do not let the trolls/haters get you down. Because when those haters buy some part from Amazon or eBay for 2/3 less, and it fails in 5 months to a year it's them getting to redo their own work.

On the key fob, I've found that usually it's crud/carbon buildup on the connector pad under the conductive rubber of the button. Popping it open and cleaning the contact surface with a Q tip and isopropyl alcohol takes about 5 minutes and almost always fixes the issue.

I bought a new one of these when they first came out, Tiger Woods drove the same brown Enclave as me. Should have known as a technician not to buy first year models. This thing fell apart in my hands over the course of a year. It was in the Buick shop seven times. My salesman encouraged me to seek lemon law protection. I patiently let them fix it and then traded it in for a GMC truck (didn't want them to pass the problem to someone unsuspecting). It was better but now I am firmly a Toyota and Lexus only fan.

As I was watching I kept getting the feeling, that this was going to reflect a 'Just Rolled In' or 'Mechanical Nightmares' vibe. But with some added twists: I wonder who removed and failed to replace the horn fuse? Dealership? Neighbor? Family member? That 'aftermarket' red wire, is also a cliffhanger. What was up with that? On a side note, I own a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE (5.3L, reg cab/short bed, 4wd). Ordered it in spring 2017, took deliver in August 2017. Haven't had any problems with it. Yet... Although, it does have a few 'quirks' that I live with.

Eric I ran across something a few months ago I had never saw, I'm a full auto tech in a manufacturing plant so if I get it in my bays it was never good to begin with. Ac wasnt cooling on an acadia, checked all the fuse and relay was blowing but compressor wasnt kicking on ohmed all the wiring from the compressor back to the fuse box and climate control mod and found nothing. As I was looking at the dic the temp outside was showing -34 degrees and I thought that was strange because I'm inside a plant so got out the trusty MDI and a laptop to check codes found nothing, went into ambient air temp sensor and it had a recalibrate function so recalibrated it and wallahh, didnt know if you had saw that before in the field but I hadnt in the plant. It thought it was too cold to kick the compressor on, wierd man. but getting parts is pretty easy for me, usually have plenty of them and the cars are clean and that makes thing alot easier too, good vids man I watch them all the time, keep up the good work.

@21:12 As I found out with my 2008 Buick LaCrosse. Loved the car but everytime I went to the dealer, it was a $300 bill or more. It all added up to constantly fixing things. I don't do any of my maintenance anymore because of my bad back. But it cost over $100 just to change the front headlight because the battery, battery hold down, frame cross tie, and front bumper have to be removed to access the headlamp. The kicker was an estimate for $1900 to replace the cat and two o2 sensors. Can't get away by removing the cat, can't use a cheap cat because it has to meet California regs. So sold the car and will never buy another American brand vehicle.

I had a ‘17 LaCrosse diag bad cat and was going through a lemon buyback because no CA cat available. I found the problem to be a bad weld on exh pipe. Sold it because of stonewalling of east coast GM Attys. left me with very bad taste in my mouth. No more GM.

Your problem is going to the dealer...learn to find the best shop in your area. There are plenty of shops out there that do fantastic work and don't charge stupid prices or play games. People that take their car to the dealer for anything other than warranty and recall work and act like it's the cars fault just infuriate me...I've never taken my vehicle to the dealer other than for recall work. I do all of my own work besides tires and evac and charge a/c...I have severe health problems and a bad back but I still do it. Not all American cars are junk...it's your fault. Not the cars. Most cars are made in America these days anyways just so you know. My 04 Suburban will outlast ANY vehicle on the road...and it's cheap to fix anything on it.

Over $2K at the dealer for just ONE problem on the list (and did the customer list end with "love always" or was that skipped?) - but I digress. This is why I pretty much only go to the dealer in extreme cases, or recalls.
