In this video, I show you most of the steps in making my first Tubulum (PVC pipe instrument) from 2" PVC pipe. The tubulum took only about 2 weeks to make, but it's even easier now with my complete the plans book with professional drawings, etc. Please buy it!! It's a modest cost for what you get!

Nice! I built a similar instrument after seeing a bunch of KZfaq videos of buskers playing pvc pipe instruments....didn’t have any plans, used mostly 1 1/2in pipe used second hand parts from the local Habitat for Humanity store(biggest score was a huge number of pvc elbows at 25 cents apiece!). I probably spent less that $150 on the whole thing. I wish i’d known about the pipe cutter...I used a chop saw, so lots of non biodegradable dust. You can make the whole thing more compact by using more elbows, good to know if you plan on transporting it much. You can see some videos of me playing it on my channel.

Oaty makes pipe cleaner to remove the lettering or you can use acetone if you move fast with it...

Hi, your Tubulum is our Memorial Day project with our grandson. We have your book. Just a couple questions: I'm not figuring out how the pipes fit together in order. [1] is the highest note (F), right? Then [2] is F# and [3] is G, yes? Then once the pipes start being made of multiple sections and elbows, what order does the numbering follow? The shopping list calls for an FF elbow 45°, but the quantity os 0. What's the correct quantity? We are having tons of fun. Thanks for putting the plans together!

Does the lengths, shown on the spreadsheet, account for the length of the 90 degree bends?

I have the book, but I can't find 1.25" x 4" x 72" pine board. Will 1" x 4" x 72" work?

Yes, 1" x 4" x 72' will work, but be careful to adjust any other pieces that were counting on the extra 1/4" thickness. At home depot, it's called 5/4" (not 1.25" or 1-1/4") select pine. Let me know if you have any other questions.

So well done. I've got to make one this summer. instead of Oct and Nov. :-) Mic'ing a Tubulum will be tricky but I may use several lavalier mics. Does the spread sheet include thrift store flip flops?

You mean "rock" -- It actually feels pretty sturdy. Of course, the PVC is quite heavy and the mallets (sandals) are light, so there's not a significant deflection when you play it.

JoyeMusic.com Mine is much smaller scale Had to be. Chose open notes for a standard bass tuning for 2” Then one full octave for 1.5” pipe. What was the wood depth for your head holder board 1”? The top 1” x 12” x 30” Board Like your wheel idea. 👍 I am the executive director of Rhythm For You here in FW Texas. I was a kit player when younger now I call myself a rhythmist. Lol. Play hand drums from all around the world. Or as many was we can get our hands on. We have hand percussion instruments as well. Thanks for your prior response and look forward to your next. Need some help. But I’m having fun!!!!!!!

@@beyondyou4151 The sound is dramatically quieter with smaller pipes. I really envy a guy I saw who had 4" PVC, with long bass pipes - They sounded incredible, but it must have weighed 300 lbs. I also built a "mini" 4-pipe portable demo version last year using 1.5" PVC, and it's pretty cool, but limited in notes. BTW, this tubulum is for sale, though it could be a pain to ship to TX! Also consider buying the "Build a Tubulum" book, which has a lot of very good info in it, along with complete mechanical drawings: Get it on Kindle ebook (www.amazon.com/dp/B07D94GJJF), or paperback (www.amazon.com/dp/1982989734?...). JoyeMusic.com Thanks for the reply. I plan on using a mic with a busking amp. Another question. You used couplings That added length to the first tube run Did you use that value in your calculations? Pipe routing on a small scale is going to be a puzzle. Looking at E2 to A2 for bass notes 2” Then C3 to C4 1.5”.

The Amazon book addresses both questions (links in description above). Yes, the costs of raw PVC have gone up a lot in the last few years, so it's probably on the order of $250 now to build one.

There are several components to doing a pro job. One resource I discovered that succeeds in merging these is the Delfords Magic Plan (check it out on google) definately the most useful course that I've heard of. look at this super resource.

@@JoyeMusiccom did you try it . i made a cat toy about 20 years ago using 1/2 pvc using that method of appliance epoxy then just plain spray enamel or latex?? as that was a method we used for dolling up formica counter tops in rehabing apt complexes . parts of that toy surfaces now and then with the paint in remarkable shape.

Has anyone else bought this guy’s book? If so, do you have a quantity of 0 for the F-F Elbow, 2”, 45-deg under the shopping list (Appendix B)?

Hi, I'm the author of the Tubulum Instruction book.... Yes, the "0" for quantity of 45-deg F-F elbows is correct to build the tubulum as I built it. I only used 90-deg elbows. Some people might want to use a 45-deg elbow in place of 90-deg in some cases, so I included that so you could see the part number. Sorry, it does look like a mistake, though (like it shouldn't be zero), and it's not explained.
