Interesting project. You're neither dumb or stupid. If people quit after trying to fabricate something physically or visualize it mentally when they failed we would still be living in the trees. a great idea try blanking off some of the holes around the edge with tape also put some draft excluder around the edge to get a better seal looking forward to the next video

By heating the plastic it is expanding, but the frame stay's the same. That extra surface has to go somewhere, that's why it wrinkels. So some more heat might work if you elevate the pieces high enough to drape the plastic in order to prevent wrinkles. It's a balancing act between heat and height. Did the holding screw on the plastic box touch the heating element? Another great video!

Interesting build that has a purpose, love it! Vacuum is a funny thing. I think your on the right path by doubling the storage. Next update might be your line size to the table and even the table hole openings to move the air out as rapidly as possible.

Also, I think your frame needs to drop below the table by about an inch. That will take up the slack created by heating. Great video!

In my field we call it Engineering on the Fly! Done it more than once, and it always seems to work. Your Dad was right though, it's frustrating as heck for a perfectionist to watch!

36:05 Yes, use them both!... Except... Perhaps you realized this now, but, you need a valve of some sort to close off the shopvac before opening the vacuum cylinders because the extremely low pressure of your evacuated cylinders will easily pull air backwards through the shopvac. The shopvac is the leak you ponder about at 39:38 So if I were to improve upon this I'd make a one way valve that's in-line with the shopvac. Since it's the air movement through the valve that keeps it open, as long as the box has essentially no leaks, once the shopvac has pulled as much bulk air as it can from the enclosed volume of the box+plastic balloon, the valve will automatically close since there's no more air movement and the vacuum cylinders can be opened to the box.

I thought about making a vacuum former but didn't think I had a use for it, I do have cats and door moldings. Thanks! I noticed that there is a wide gap between your plastic frame and the molding table. I believe that is where your losing the vacuum. If you tighten up that gap you would have better vacuum. The insulation from an oven door comes to mind. Additional holes in the valley of the molding might help. I would have had a melted electrical box too. Look forward to your videos!!

Try using a hot air gun set on medium setting use that while you're in the middle of pulling the vacuum don't get it too hot

You might try to put some sealing material where the fram contacts .

You need to add weathering stripping around the end of the table it will dramatically improve the vacuum

like the idea with the cotterpins to hold the heating elements , seems to get hot enough too as for the wrinkles , it might help if you raise the forms off the table so you stretching the plastic taut before aplying the vacuum (ah you did that now might need to go even higher so the platic wraps around and makes a sharper edge ) might allso help to turn the vacuum on after lowering the plastic so it can move a little before the drooped center of the plastic gets stuck to the middle of the table by the vacuum might allso help if you can regulate the temperature of the elements (tempsensor above the plastic and a relay turning the elements on and of depending on temperature inside the box putting a seal in between the vacuumbox and the thing holding the plastic might help raise the vacuum (faster / more) , usung the vacuum cleaner and the pump with the tank combo can work but you need to put in a valve in the vacuumhose of the vacuumcleaner so the vacuum from the pump and tank doesnt just suck more air in through the vacuum cleaner hose sumting else you might want to try is adding a strip of sandpaper to it , you see with the plastic covering the doorframe it gets too smooth for them to cause the nails to sharpen wish will probably cause them to move somewhere else , like the wallpaper keeping the surface of the moulding rough will at least stop them trying other places to scratch

Ossie - Cool idea. As you found, trying to flatten the rounded plastic over the flat form is very difficult because the rounded plastic has more surface than is needed to cover the forms. This causes the wrinkles. Shorten the forms? Fortunately, my cats never scratched furniture of molding. How about building scratching post?

Your table and the top cap has to be the same width and length so it can close up and lock the air in properly and also make sure you prop up the pieces you are molding just and inch or two

Maybe drill larger holes in the form. It would allow more suction to come through your form and suck the plastic into those voids

I say turn your trim in to cat tree material. It would look way better and intentional, like you want the cats to scratch there. Then and only then will the cats stop. 😂

Two things to try next time put seal around table so when you bring plastic down it seals up around the table and second make your pieces to hold it up off the table smaller, more of them, and in between holes in table

It's almost like you need an inverted press to mash down on top of it as soon as you drop the plastic, maybe to form into the grooves better and really sharpen the centers and edges.. Not sure if you could use the mold you make, invert it with another mold (make a negative) then after you hit the vacuum, drop the inverted piece directly over your mold, that would ensure it forms all the way down and tight against the grooves and edges of the moulding. Dunno??

I have three cats, so I guess we can be friends. What if you tried heating the plastic just above your forms while pulling vacuum. This may help the plastic get down into the grooves.

I'd drill holes down the middle of the actual forms so air can be suctioning everywhere

I thibk you'd have had better success if you laid the cold plastic sheet over the form, heat the plastic until soft, then vacuum. That should have kept the distortion out of the picture.

1 more wiring tip, and for some reason people just don't seem to understand this - i've seen it SO many times and i'm not including special cases like 1 wire to a switch and back using white and black obviously, but please for God's sake if you mess with an outlet and change it Black is Brass on whatever you're wiring.. Just pay attention to that, you have no idea how many outlets i've come across that are backwards it's SO annoying to have to pull an outlet to swap wires. Thank you : )

The plastic was allowed to sag WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much. That's the reason it was justly loosely lying on top of the thing and creating webs.

try heating the bottom table a bit.
