Well there was a lot of deliberation there on how to present this piece. I think your final outcome was very nice indeed... definitely take it to Wonderfest, you never know, the show gods may shine down on you with a gold! I was happy at Christmas with my third place Bird of Prey at my local meet, never won anything before for my models, and just goes to show there's a winner and plaudits in every corner... of which you've certainly built a few showstoppers 🙏

Great vid, lots of inspiration. As for the translucent egg, maybe just a wash on the clear resin egg and build it up from the base and darken it again as you near the lips. The one in the movie as basically slimed and lit with low light. I can recommend the Citadel, (Games Workshop) Flesh Tearers Red contrast paint, thin it down and it’s great for gory effects.

Nice job Phil, yes you did make me go looking for the kit 😡 but I could not find it at a reasonable price without flogging a kidney, so, "so-far" my stash has not grown 🙂. In saying that its one of the few my wife would have no problem with me getting and putting in our living room as she too loves the film. I'm very impressed with how well you made that egg look so organic. As always, thanks for sharing

Great finish to this kit! You should add more wall to the back where the switch is, just add magnets to keep it in place. When you need to turn the switch on, just remove half the wall to turn it on.

The syringe tendrils came out great. I wonder if Lou's fiberfill trick would work to diffuse the lights in the egg. Thanks for the video. It turned out great.

A *very* thoughtful approach to this super-detailed subject. The use of tentacle extensions really makes the platform sing. Your chum's efforts at a back wall riser is just neat, clever. Green lighting was the way to go-- the answer to your inside blob shape was to go for something in clear-- like a built up bit of UV resin or crinkled wax paper, a bit of green paint, stick some lights in there and boom, done, look out Kane! The slick goopy inner face hugger was perfectly disgusting, the drooling space slobber was utterly shutter-worthy, again, look out Kane! But stick your inquisitive face in a little closer-- sure. I hate to say one critical thing but you should have halted at 4 eggs along the front. Too crowded. To my eye.

"It's just not good enough": Only the artist knows the piece is not finished. And... Having minutely examined almost every model submitted at the San Marcos Tx IPMS 2023 show, You are as good as most of them and then some. Take Mr. Kane to the show of shows.

My view, what you did here, it is brilliant. It’s a scary and truly disgusting scene. Lol. Btw. When you were painting the fleshy part of the egg I thought, that looks gross! Not more than a half minute later you said it looked gross too! I laughed. I must rewatch the movie just to see this scene. Nice work, Phil. I enjoyed this build immensely. Looking forward to the next one.

How Many LEDs?: Count the LEDs, Multiply by (on average) .002 (200 mili-amps each). My Cheap H-E-B 9v can give 500 milliamp hours. 500 milliamps / hour. Now, before you punt, 9 volt batteries in parallel double, triple and so-on. Parallel batteries are wired "Plus" to "Plus" and "Minus' to "Minus". Depends on how much room is under the base. That wall wart is either 1, 2, o 5 amps at the output.

Hi Phil, a couple of quick questions. I will be starting the build of the 1:350 enterprise refit dated 2023 with all the bells and whistles. I'm unable to paint the Aztec design, so I was considering using the Aztec decals instead that I ordered that are dated 2021. My question is, should I spray the decals to prevent tearing, or breakage, and what would you recommend since Testors doesn't make decal bonder anymore. I was thinking maybe spraying a light coat of matte clear on the decal sheets before removing them. Unless the decals are new enough that it shouldn't be a problem with the decals being damaged during the application. The Aztec kit I ordered was the Polar Light kit from HDA modelworx. Hi Phil. Lots of good work in this one. Unfortunately, from my viewpoint I feel that you fell into the trap of getting too excited about what you "could" do rather than thinking about the piece "in world". The original figure kit morphed into a diorama rather than being planned as such from the start which is what gave you the issues with the lighting switch and placement of the 3D printed parts. Also, because you had the ability to print a load of eggs that is what you did but I feel that this has made the whole piece too cluttered and busy, detracting from the central figure. For me, a major scary part of the scene is the fact that the egg that hatches is just one of thousands and is in no way special. In your diorama it is the only one on its own and elevated above the rest. It may have been a better plan to take the hit and "back up and punt" as Lou says and redo the base with a unified plan, giving a more consistent overall feel. However, as you keep saying (and I totally agree with!), it's your model and you can do whatever you like with it. If the process and end results make you happy then that's all that counts 👍😁
