In today's video I'm going to walk you through how to build a Shaker cabinet door with a table saw. If you're new to woodworking, then you know what it's like not to have the tools you want or think you need. That's why I wanted to do a video demonstrating a way to build Shaker cabinet doors without a router table, special bits, or a dado blade, but by using the standard 10 inch blade in your table saw.

Not only are you a good "craftsman", but a good teacher. A good teacher knows his stuff while relating the need to work safe. Perhaps the most important aspect of "teacher talent" is this fact. There are some very good trades folks on KZfaq. You are by far at the top tier. What I like about your videos are that they are no nonsense and practical. You get straight to the point without a lot of fluff. You also have a teaching spirit- you clearly are a professional and an expert YET you make the viewer feel very comfortable allowing us to ease into the lesson. Not everyone does that. Great video and very good instruction. This is a perfectly acceptable way of making a small cabinet door, but keep in mind this is the weakest of the three commonly used methods. So if you are a beginner (as the video states) don’t hesitate to do this. You will be using what’s referred to as a stub tenon. Plenty strong enough. But if someone kneels to access a lower cabinet and then uses the door as a crutch to get up (not that uncommon,) the upper joint on the hinge side takes a lot of pressure. Often it is the hinge that gives first, though. So a cope joint, made with a router bit set, is the next strongest and the method found in most “factory” doors. Here you have the same stub tenon, but additional glue surface where the rail copes the stile. The strongest joint would be a full mortise and tenon. Here, the long grain glue joint on the mortise and tenon cheeks is virtually indestructible, if made right. An upgrade to the stub tenon would be to consider 1/2” grooves (grooves, not dados because dados are grooves that run across the grain, usually on the face of the board) and stub tenons. That 25% extra glue surface, per joint, goes a long way. I don’t mean to be critical or disrespectful of the video. It is fine and well explained as an entry level method. Just want to give some vision to the beginners as to how their door making skills will evolve, and the theory behind it.

Frank - I need to make 10 to 12 cabinet doors for a rental property I own. I've built several boxes with box joints. Is there a video you recommend that shows how to make these doors with a router and/or dados as you recommend?

@@bernarddouthit478 Hi Bernard. Woodworkers Journal has a good video on making cope and stick joints on a router table. You will need a router table - can’t do these free hand with a router. I have a video on my site showing mortise and tenon construction with a handheld router and table saw dado blade. It’s for passage doors, not for cabinet doors, but the process is the same, scaled down. All that said, nothing wrong with the techniques in this video for rental property doors. You can up the process with a dado set if you have one. That will speed up and make more accurate the production of all those stub tenons you will need. The front end of my video on hammer veneering will give you a look at what the mortise and tenon cabinet doors look like, but is probably an overkill joint for rental property doors. It is usually a technique reserved for high end furniture or where the strength of that joint is really needed. Hope this helps.

Great video, the only thing I would add is using a small dab of glue in the middle of the center grove of each side of the panel to prevent it from making a sound when closing. But just a dab so it can still expand and contract.

I built my first woodworking project, a table, when I was 71. Since then I have made a bookshelf with dado cuts, a china cabinet with glass panel doors, a solid oak bathroom vanity with raised panel doors (my biggest project so far), and an antique wall clock. I am now 73. You at 72 can definitely do it.

@@drmachinewerke1 Plywood doesn't move much, so spacer balls are not really necessary. However, if you are using solid wood for the panels, then they are a must.

Used your exact method to make a friend's doors in his kitchen. I don't have the same clamps you do but I figured out that, when gluing, I could place a board underneath my rails and clamp it down and that kept the door from twisting. Thanks! I just used Pine wood, I hope it lasts (fingers crossed)

I'm going to try to adapt your method to make a larger (28"W x 56"H) two-panel door to cover an attic ceiling hatch ... I like the simplicity of your design, and believe it will mod to a three-rail version --

Three rails worked! -- I dry-fitted all the pieces, then glued-and-clamped the CENTER rail to both stiles FIRST so that I could then slide in the two panels, one from each end. Toughest problem was cleaning up the tenons with a chisel because my saw-teeth were "ATB". Thank you for an EXCELLENT instructional-video!

I have to build 14 doors and 3 new cabinets to remodel my kitchen in a condo in Myrtle beach using this style door,,,the only difference is to avoid that cheap hollow sounding door ,,I`m gonna use 3/8`s birch for the panels for a more denser sound,,I got till May to have them done and painted

I was down in my workshop, looking over all the bits for my handheld router that I've never used, trying to figure out how to build doors like this.
