Let’s explore “What’s changing (and why) in ventilation?”
What You'll Learn:
1. Ventilation code requirements and best practices are changing. You will see it in your AHJ soon.
2. Balanced Ventilation is in. Depressurized buildings are out.
3. Regional density and climate change have changed the air we breathe. Some key states now require particle filters on incoming air.

Can something be done with a clothes drier vent? As we run the drier we are most likely pulling a suction on the house structure. Could we run this warm exhaust through a cross flow core to warm and temper the overlooked needed supply air?

@Matt Risinger I really like this Zehnder system, I am actually designing a small home (single story est. 1300 square feet, with a partial (est. 612 square feet) full basement currently in the North East, love the explanation and the fact that I can install the right size system, run the home runs myself and just call Zehnder and have some one stop by and dial it in, is fantastic!!! Does the Zehnder System work in Florida where the outside due point often is above 75F?

I just bought an air quality monitor to see where I'm at so this is great. Trying to figure out the best way to get the air in my 80s house better.

Are there recommendations if a home was being built by the homeowner so design changes could be implemented to reduce component or total cost of the system?

It would be helpful to categorize when to use certain equipment. For example, if the home blower test is greater than 2-3 ACH @50 pascals then it may be more practical to do filtered fresh air input and bath/laundry fans to exhaust versus less than 1-2 ACH @50 pascals where air infiltration has been minimized such that an ERV system would be a better fit.

In the process of designing a new house up in Vancouver Canada area. Love this channel Matt. Simple question. Is the ERV a completely separate system from the our ducted heating cooling air source heatpump?

Yes, its all in the name Heating, Ventialtion, and Air Conditioning. You need all 3. The ERV only handles ventilation. The technologly in the zender units allows for efficient energy transfer to reduce cost of heating and cooling of the fresh air but you would still need a heating/cooling unit to change the indoor climate.

How does a ventilation system like this Zehnder would do with a kitchen exhaust that would extract out around 600CFM? This is important to consider as it can depressurize the airtight home, and that’s not a good idea. What are the recommendations by Zehnder regarding the kitchen exhaust?

Like the information, however, his assumption that a 50 CFM bath fan puts out significant less that 50 CFM. Look at the pressure drop over the length of the exhaust pipe typically 4 -6 feet is typically 10 CFM. Static pressure needs to be taken into account.

Fresh air equals wasted energy. If not make a cooler more efficient with using no electricity. You are using unconditioned air and pumping it outside. To reclaim the energy you use more energy to put it back in. Just another way to waste money

I sure do and as people turn on exhaust from the range bathrooms and open doors it goes away just like in many years past.

These systems are meant for a modern home with tight envelopes not older homes. Modern homes are designed with high effeinecy(high insulation/r valve costruction) and a tighter envelope which takes less money to heat and cool. The down side is you need an extra system to handle the ventilation of the home which is where zender comes in. I agree that these systems can be a waste of money but only if they are placed in an environment where condiotions cant be controlled like in older homes where the envelope is not as tight.

Really outstanding presentation and information. Saving my spare pennies to get one of these installed in my house sometime in the next couple years. Edit: Matt your HVAC joke was 100% spot on. I air sealed my ducts with mastic and the last HVAC service guy I had here saw it and said sealing ducts inside the envelope is a waste of time. 🫣
