Cool stuff Traffer! I am out in my shop building similar tools right now. I too get way too complicated, then try to simplify back down to minimal moving parts. I am going the way of a guillotine at the moment. A tubing cutter also works...I am a plumber btw... G>

Guillotine crimpers are the most common type. They work well enough for plinking ammo. I am in the process of trying to make match grade ammo now. The guillotine crimp is not consistent enough for that.

The 204 Ruger crimp die constricts to .2311 not the size I state in the video. The 223 Remington constricts to .253". The optimum diameter of a 22lr crimp is .189"

Cutting edge bullets makes a set of dies (including crimping) for the 22lr. Since you want to make match grade, you may want to try their projectiles as well

I don't want to use match grade bullets. I want to make the best bullets ever made. Cutting edge has copied much of my stuff already. I am the first one to develop this stuff for 22lr.

your design at minute 16 reminds me of the collet in a router that retains the .25" shaft router bits. Might also be something to consider as a starting point.

That could indeed be modified to crimp these things. It may be a bit slow though. It would seem that you could get it to be more precise though.

I ordered some off amazon a few days ago thinking along the same lines. I'll see if I can make the alterations from.0.250" to 0.189". Going in the wrong direction for metal removal machining! I am looking to recrimp factory .22 Magnum ammo based on Mark and Sam's research on Y-T.

@@Patrick-kc5ur I sent the info to Mark and Sam for them to do that. He however did not mention the fact that it was my idea to begin with. My advise is to modify an existing Lee Factory Crimp Die. A 22 caliber or less works. I think that the 204 Ruger works the best.

Perhaps modify a bullet cannelure tool? The Corbin one might work better than the C&H one.... Thanks for making this video, it's gotten my mind working on a crimp tool for 22 Mag.
@HanstheTraffer

I have considered the cannelure tools. Something like that could be made to work. Kind of slow though. There is a design that George Frost used to test his experimental loads when converting from black powder to smokeless back when. It is a "roll along a blade" kind of thing. Where two in line rails, one with a knife edge protruding a tiny bit roll a cartridge between them pushing the blade into the case, causing the crimp. This is the method that commercial ammunition is made with. Only instead of using a straight block they use large wheel that rolls the cartridge into a blade. This allows for fast and continuous operation. There is a guy in Australia that makes machines like that for roll sizing brass. Whitehouse engineering? If I had the money I would have him make me a roll crimper for 22lr out of that. If you search youtube for "rollsizing 101" you will see the concept. Crimping 22lr is done with a rollsizing type of machine BUT it is done with one with a blade that crimps the brass.

I gonna try making a hole in a pair of thin even blade scissors to crimp 22

Let me know how it works....My original crimper was a small electricians pliers with a 22lr sized groove with an edge for crimping. I still have it but have ground off the ridge and just use it for pulling bullets ...squeezing down too large of diameter bullets, holding cases and yada yada.

After seeing this great video, I went and bought every possible crimp die in the .224 range, .204, .223, .22-250 and I'm still wanting to go ahead making my own crimping die. I called Cutting Edge Bullets and asked if their .22 LR dir would work on .22WRM they said NO. However, the case diameters are different, but the OD is closer than centerfire dies. That may make reaming out their crimping die a more logical choice? An extended shell hold is also a requirement for the centerfire dies, if I'm understanding the process?
@HanstheTraffer
@HanstheTraffer 2 жыл бұрын
Yes an extended shell holder would also be required when using Center Fire Dies for either 22lr or 22 WMR. Check out "Old West Bullet Molds" website. Bernie makes adjustable rim fire shell holders. He has pictures of them. I am not sure he makes them for 22lr or 22wmr but I'm sure he can. I think I have a video that shows how I made them. You will need to know how to cut the grove in the base to make the holder. If you do any machining it is easy. If you are not familiar with lathe work and milling machine work you will have to figure out how to do that. It' s a simple procedure but you will either have to grind a special cutting bit (end mill) to make the slotted groove to hold the rim of the case. As far as the crimp diameter and recutting the die from a center fire die, I did not just measure and cut. It was a process of trial and error, sneaking up on the final dimensions. Some people are good at that and some aren't. It would be difficult to just give someone a drawing with dimensions for a crimp die. 22wmr does have a larger case diameter. But there are no absolute dimensions for depth of crimp either. So again experimentation and "sneaking up" on the final dimension is necessary. I hope this makes it clear. Also, I haven't worked on this stuff now for a couple of years. So I can't hop on my lathe and work out the dimensions or anything. Good luck. Just keep at it... you will figure it out...PS if you pay a machinist or someone like Old West to do the work for you be prepared to pay a pretty penny.

PS Changing the "height" of the die, like you said would require an adjustable holder, if you used Cutting Edges die. You would also have to change the diameter of the crimp a bit. That MAY require touching up the sharp angle on the very edge of the crimp. Otherwise it would make a thick ring crimp, if you get what I mean. Also, If you are going to use copper bullets, many of the dynamics of the crimp/burn will be a little different. Just as Cutting Edge is finding out precision match cartridges takes time and patients and quite a bit of study to figure out. Personally I think that swaged lead bullets are a far more viable solution for rimfire shooting.

@@HanstheTraffer I think starting with a die that is for .22 LR is a better starting point than with a centerfire die that is tool large. It took you several steps to round out the ID with reamers on the .204 die if I recall. Better to enlarge a .22 LR die in my opinion. I do have a lathe, a nice SB 9" with R8 collects. Old West is out of stock on the .22 LR crimp dies. What got me started down the .22WMR road was a You Tuber by Mark and Sam criming them with improved accuracy on factory ammo. They are long range shooter even ouyt to a mile in some calibers. Good folks.

Working more on proof of concept type stuff now. I wouldn't make one for a person because at this point these need tweaking on a regular basis to keep them on spec.

Will this work for .22 Magnum? I'm trying to acheive a Crimp As seen on MarkandSam AfterWork ( On KZfaq) they use .223 Crimper Somehow.

Mark and Sam learned from me. It will work on a 22 WMR. But you have to have the tools to make it. Like the 22lr, just about any 22 cal Lee Factory Crimper can be modified.
