As long as you have time and patience, this is a pretty easy and affordable DIY acoustic treatment project for your recording studio. All you need are some basic construction tools-saw, sander, glue, tape measure, and clamps.
Skyline diffusers improve recording and listening environments by diffusing, or scattering, specific frequencies of sound waves when reflecting off of surfaces. Instead of sound hitting a flat wall and reflecting directly back at you, a diffuser disperses the reflection of the sound wave and interrupts it from being directly reflected back at you. This still allows for brightness within your studio while limiting problematic reverb.
I used the frequency calculator below to help plan the project. You can tune by frequency, or by the dimensions of the panel you want to build:

Great work and video!! I had to sign in and let you know your video was one of the, if not the best I've seen and I'm in the process of building some diffusers in my audio room as well...... I still need to make a few more acoustic panels, but I'm planning on tackling my diffusers first. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks! I appreciate that. I like my setup quite a bit, everything came together nice and acoustically it has made a huge difference. Good luck on your build!

If you're not in a humidity controlled room, this construction method may not be long term durable. There is significant expansion and contraction of the wood blocks (but not the plywoood base, potentially a half inch over 4 feet depending on species) and this can cause the junction to fail, or cause cracking etc depending on the mounting choice used. Main point is you should control for humidity.

Thanks for the great video. I will have to watch it a few more times before I start making saw dust. How do you determine what frequencies you need to defuse and/or absorb?

Right on. First, you need to determine the primary type of recording you'll being doing, i.e. electric guitars, acoustic guitars, bass, drums, vocals, etc. Each source of sound has a frequency spectrum. I primarily record male speaking vocals for podcasts and audiobooks, so I googled what the frequency range is of the male voice. I then designed my studio to absorb and defuse those frequencies (there's a link to calculators in the description-type in the low and high end of the frequencies that you're trying to diffuse and it will generate specs / dimensions of the skyline diffusor). I'm not worried about bringing an entire band into my studio, so I didn't tune my room for very high or very low frequencies. You'll notice at large / professional studios they have multiple isolation booths surrounding a larger "live" room. Generally, these isolation booths are designed a little different from each other and are individually tuned for guitars, bass, vocals, etc. The larger live room is more general purpose for big instruments like pianos and drums, or the entire band playing together within the same room. So, decide on how you think you'll use your room the most, and design around that. Any dedicated acoustic treatment will make your recordings sound better than flat walls, but "tuning" should help optimize the way frequencies behave within a certain spectrum-in the end, making your recordings sound more natural and less affected by the unnatural characteristics boxy rooms. Sorry for the long ramble!

@@swhammondbuildsreviews Makes perfect sense. Unfortunately I'm trying to acoustically treat a basement theater. Specifically a Magnepan 5.1 setup so I'm struggling with how much reflected sound I want to diffuse and absorb.

Hey great video! Is How did you know how many 2 by 2’s you needed?

In the link to the design calculator in the description, it will output how many meters of material you need to accomplish the plan. I then went to google and converted that to feet, 49'. Also remember, that in my case, my diffusers are larger than what the plan calls for. The plan will tell you how wide your diffuser must be in centimeters, I also had to convert that number, 18". However, I wanted a 2'x6' diffuser, and a 4'x4' diffuser. More math. I basically needed to build 11 sections 18"x18" plan to fit 2'x6' and 4'x4'. I multiplied 11 (sections) x 49' (linear feet) = 539 total linear feet. Then divided by 8' (the length 2"x2" comes in), which equals 68 sticks. So, I bought (68) 2"x2"8' pieces of lumber. Clear as mud, huh??? haha, there is a method to my madness in there somewhere

Way too complex of a question for a KZfaq comment. I suggest general sound treatment - mimic the way control rooms are treated at recording studios.

According to what is the bevel at the top of each stake arranged?

I rotated them 45 degrees each time I set them. The goal was to not have two side-by-side reflecting in the same direction.

@@swhammondbuildsreviews So what standard did you cut the top side according to? Is it an acute triangle?
@swhammondbuildsreviews
@swhammondbuildsreviews 2 жыл бұрын
It's been a while, I can't remember exactly, but I think it was 22.5 degrees. It wasn't to a specific standard, I was just trying to avoid 90 degree flat tops.
