Because everyone keeps asking, the build was around $3,100. In part 2 I will do a detailed breakdown on what and what not to buy, and if building one is even worth the effort (spoiler: you can buy them mostly assembled from AliExpress for cheaper so building one is only worth it if you love building things) I’m not normally the type to ask for you to subscribe, but I have 3 other projects I’m working on currently that are similar to this and the videos doing well helps motivate me to build more stuff, so hit that button! Also, I’ve learned a lot about building battery packs since this video, would anyone be interested in a tutorial that goes through the thought process of making a pack?

@@ayon3x Yeah I am interested in doing that, but I can't decide whether to use a new cheap bike or a used one off marketplace. In a lot of videos like that, the person finds a great bike for like $100 or already has one and that's the main reason the build is so cheap, but most people won't get a deal like that. I was thinking about buying one of those cheap moped style bikes and upgrading it, maybe keeping the budget under $1900 for a 6000w ebike.

Heyo, I work with high-voltage EVs and some stuff I feel like I should just mention as a safety. Please do NOT use solder on HV lines. The HV terminals are meant to be crimped. High voltage connection can easily get hot enough in some situation to melt the solder. It is industry standard to never solder these as it is a safety issue. I would also double check the bus bar size and thickness you are using to connect the cells together. Depending on how much current you pull through your pack, the bus bar (seems like you are using nickel or tin strips) may add a lot of heat you don't want. Very cool build and clean video! Keep up the good work!
@Calthecool
@Calthecool 18 күн бұрын
@@XxBanziixX1 I now know to not solder those wires, although it should probably be fine considering they are big copper terminals with 3 gauge wire. The nickel strips are 8 x 0.2mm, which I determined would be good enough after looking at a bunch of forums, all of which gave different values.
@jonesy2009
@jonesy2009 10 күн бұрын
@@Calthecool just because the wires can take the current without getting overly hot doesn't mean you wont run into a situation like the terminal screw coming loose and causing a high resistance fault that heats the terminal and melts the solder.

I built exactly the same battery pack. but 20s 13p LG cells What was built in a triple stack. For my stealth bomber but I used 2 mm of nick And 2mm copper 2x =4mm copper. 2 mm of nickel strips is nowhere near enough. for 72v 150A. And I only used BMS for charging. And use a diy pre-charge system contact for discharging. The way you built that battery pack. It will be touching the sides Very tight. The side boats will be touching. I don't blame you i done them mistakes in the past.
@Calthecool
@Calthecool 21 күн бұрын
Yes this was my first pack so there are definitely some mistakes. I think that it will be fine touching the sides, as it's wedged in there tight and I used the plastic sheets. I think that 8mm x 0.2mm nickel was fine for this pack, as each strip will only carry 10 amps. It will also only be outputting 150 amps for a brief period of time, because the motor is a 5T winding so it accelerates too fast to be able to pull full power for long, unless I rode it in deep sand or something.

You get what you pay for when it comes to 18650's. That is such an important aspect of the build. For example I can really accelerate hard on my 7kw E-scooter it's pulls just as much as my camaro til about 20/30 mph, not to say it doesn't have top speed but E-scooters with road tires are INCREDIBLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO SPEED WOBBLE AT 60-70mph. "DON'T GET ROAD TIRES" I hit speed wobble twice and I wasn't wearing a helmet because I was just going down my own street. Anyway brother I have some High end LG cells I paid a butt load for but they make a HUGE difference in available power under load. I can go look it up if you want, let me know. Because your acceleration is looks to me about 3-4kw at best.

@Calthecool personally I wouldn't use a bms that wasn't specifically designed for a lithium ion pack. Is the bms certified? Has it gone through proper testing? I have seen 18650 fires myself and they are quite scary. They release toxic gases, fire, and spread fast. Uncertified, untested Chinese batteries are also a huge problem. That's why laws are being passed requiring certification. That doesn't mean homemade battery modules aren't. Additionally it's not during use that scares me most, it's during charging. Does that bms monitor temps in addition to just voltage? Maybe its out of an abundance of caution, or from what I have seen with li-ion and 18650 packs, but At the end of the day I wouldn't risk my safety or my families with an untested uncertified battery pack.

@@yrguitar1 it’s made for lithium ion packs, and it has temperature sensors and a Bluetooth app that lets you check individual parallel group voltages. For the first charge I was constantly checking the voltage of every parallel group.
