With all structural posts in place, the 35' beam installed and the first wall raised on the second floor of our A-Frame cabin addition, we turn our attention to the 13x28 block safe room. We have 620 12" block that need to be laid before we install the steel beams and pour the concrete ceiling. This is part one of the block room build with hopes to complete the project in one week.

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.
Our house build is documented entirely on our main channel "Wild Wonderful Off-Grid" and the buiness/work related side of our life can be found on our secondary channel "Josh and Erin- The After Show". Here you will see us renovating our Cafe, opening/operating the Cafe with goods from our farm, building/furnishing/running our short term rentals, finding/operating our other real estate investments and more.

So impressed by your monumental effort at laying all those blocks. Did this exact kind of job as a younger man and I know your pain. Hands tense up from all the weight that you've lifted through the day until they no longer function properly. My shoulders, back and legs used to cramp as I lay in bed trying to rest the night after coming home from work. Four courses are no easy feat and I commend you both. Erin, you are a beast and amazing!!!! Josh, rest up and drink lots of coffee!!! You'll need it.

You two are absolutely AMAZING! Josh is the fastest block layer I have ever seen in my life, given the time lapse photography photo shopping all y'all did. lol? That really is a lot of work laying that 12 inch block and lifting it up over all that rebar like that. Trust me I am talking from experience having tended mud as a mud hoddy for a professional block layer I worked for in my younger years who layed 450 of those 12 inch block just like that in only one eight and a half hours time. I almost had a hard time trying to keep up with him. You two are truly awesome. maybe next time, if there ever is a next time, you might rather consider using concrete forms and pouring solid concrete walls instead. It was just a thought. Good show, folks. You are truly awesome. Bravo! Namaste!

I'm a senior today but in my 30s I took on a job where all day 13-16 hours/day, in freezing Utah winter weather, we were lifting 150-250lbs all day. We worked in teams of two. I took the job because it paid twice what all other jobs paid at the time, but mostly because they said a 'woman' couldn't do this job. I was one of 112 crew and only female. I remember that 7 days a week 16 weeks straight fondly and boy did I sleep well each night in my van conversion. My point of sharing this is to say you remember hard work and it always pays off. Your family's work ethic will reward you for all of your days.❤

You guys got this. Each block is consistent in weight and dimension. That is a huge advantage in strategy. Climbing a tree that needs to be removed, there is nothing consistent about that kind of work. Count your good fortunes, and use heating pads on your aching muscles. As long as you don`t hurt yourselves in the beginning, your muscles and tendons will adjust, as well as your technique in managing the work load. Hot baths and massages are good way to help each other, and changing around which side of your body handles the load, throughout the day. Know when your muscles are fatigued, and adjust to other muscles, or take a rest. Eat light during the work, and guzzle water and air.

I had to do the math - 620 blocks at 52 pounds each = 32,240 pounds.... my back is screaming for you. I really love how the boys jump in to help and Ellie does what she can too, such a lovely family. Any updates on the Trout Pond location?

My wife and I have done an untold amount of home remodel/build projects together...even down to studs/reconfigure to architect drawings type of builds....but NOTHING on this level...kudos to you, your work ethic, and your energy levels!!! Those days are gone for us!!! All the best!!!

Just an FYI… If you mark a 5 gallon bucket and keep your hose running into it, you will always get the same consistency of concrete. A BONUS is that you won’t have to stand there squirting water into a mixer… your 5 gallon bucket will already be full, just pour it in.
