Having done a bit of research in carving a Kuksa, we came to the conclusion that it would be best to have a safe way to work on the carving. The workbench should keep the wood in place making it easier and safer to carve.

Hi. It is good to watch s person that takes the task of making something of a piece of wood. You are developing into a field that many of us not even thought. Have fun and show to us when you finished it. Greetings from Nevada. The Old Fart.

It doesn't matter what it looks like as long as it's working for you. The fact that your enjoying it, isn't that what really counts. Have fun and can't wait to see the finished product.

Thanks Jim! Sorry my original reply didn't save. I think Sandra may be going with a different style for her bowl. She looking a making one out of a birch tree. Should be a fun project as well.

We shouldn't care what others think. It looked good to me and as long as it does the job...perfect. Miss seeing you outdoors though. Hopefully soon with your new bowl.

Kudos for building yourself a carving bench. Having built a lot of these myself, I can suggest the bench would be a LOT more stable and wouldn't wobble around so much if you replace those spindly little legs with some stouter ones. A good carving bench should not be wobbling and shifting as you use it. You need legs about twice the diameter of the ones you used.

It works and that's all that matters, some cross beams in a x pattern across the long span will really stabilize the bench more. You can easily customize that bench, flatten out the unused area for tool storage, drill some holes as slots for different carving tools. You could even install some hooks on the side for hanging tools that are on lanyards. That's a nifty little design, I use a similar method but much smaller for holding my water stones for sharpening. Great video and thank you for sharing

What it you carve out a small center dimple on your work bench would that work better than cutting your bowl flat on the end?.just wondering.

Nice video as always. My dad used to make a lot of what ju call kuksa,(in swedish "kosa") he used pliers to drag the fibres out and a curved knife, but your way is as good as any

@IamOutdoorsy

You might be able to use a hammer and chisel though it'd likely take a while.
