Building a class 323 in N gauge - bodies, chassis and interiors
With renewed vigour I wanted to get the 323 up and running: new bodies made, decals printed - well sort of, chassis made painted and glued to interiors. Do they all fit together? Take and look to find out. Enjoy

John, the train has a very good look. You will soon have it running dcc. You have to be in the mood, though. A couple of weeks ago, I resurrected four locos that I'd put away in disgust two years ago!! Fiddly drive shafts, bent driving gear, friction tyres, and dcc blanking plates. Magnifying glasses and tweezers to the fore. They are all running now, so I feel happy. But! It took the right day to do it all. Hope your right day comes along soon. Regards, Stephen.

Hi John! You're such a clever chap! You tackled at least three things that scare me in the hobby - modifying non-NEM couplings, waterslide decals and DCC conversion - and it was all going very well until the final reveal! I'm sure you'll have the DCC issues sorted in double quick time, but I'll wish you good luck just in case you need some! :) All the best, Ian.

Thanks Ian, I’ve been making bodyside transfers for a few years, generally work well. Although the most recent formulation of lacquer has changed and not so water tight as once was. I’m experimenting with magnetic couplings, so far all good. I just believe in giving things a go, nothing ventured and all that. When somethings goes wrong we hunt for a solution. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.

It took Thomas Edison 1,000 tries to find the right filament for his electric light bulb. The filament that worked was tungsten. John just keep keeping on like Edison did. You will, in due time, find what will work and succeed. Bill and Janet from California

Absolutely, there are countless people who continually failed over and over again. Then one day success came. I’ll find a way it’s there. Thank you for watching and commenting.

lol, bless you. I have 3d printed the chassis and started to fit parts but they are taking a lot of fettling. Work in the morning and I work with kids, for me there’s always another day. We are all different and that makes for a colourful world.

Hi and thank you. I’ve now 3d printed the new chassis, so it’s a matter of time if it’ll work.

Hi John, You must be disappointed you did not get her to run but knowing you I am sure you will at some stage do it so well done and it gives you a break from the building work. Cheers Robert.

Dear John, am in awe for your stamina and patience. May I just guess you edited out the swearing parts? Nevertheless, the 323 looks great, especially for such a first run. Love the way you tweaked the coupling distance. I’ll just be patient for the inaugural run of the 323 with DCC. Cheerio

Hi John - fascinating build project. Must be so frustrating not getting it running on DCC. I'm sure you'll figure it out. Entertaining video 😊

Hi Euan, yes very, thought it would be easy, but despite much isolating something must be touching the chassis. I’m guessing the flywheels, but so hard to see. I’ve 3d printed the chassis now so hopefully that’ll sort it.

Boy, you certainly set yourself a challenge. I admire your courage to attempt the project and to be totally honest to put your bogies on the track and admit it has not fully worked. Many would have kept it under wraps and only revealed it if it worked or quietly sent it off to the modern version of the Barry scrapyard! I have total admiration for what you are doing and hope you find the solution soon. Maybe it's worth checking in with others who may have DCCd the 170 chasis? I'm sure you will find the answer!

Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it. I believe being honest in these things is the best way. Trying something different can throw up all sorts of unexpected issues. I have now 3d printed the chassis, so hopefully that’ll solve the issues. It does also allow modifications for the extra weights. Time will tell.

At least aesthetically you have a 323 to sit in a siding until you can solve the electrical problem. A lot of effort put in there especially that you are having to work largely from photographs and the odd drawing. Plainly something is creating an unwanted connection to cause the short, but of course the difficulty is finding what that might be and then working out how to stop it! I'm sure you will solve it eventually but one sometimes wishes the modelling Gods would give one a clue. Stephen

Thank you Stephen, yes exactly. I’m currently 3d printing new chassis so hopefully that’ll solve the problem, as I can determine where the metal weights go. Time will tell.
