Regarding the description- putting a motherboard on an antistatic bag can be dangerous. The clear bags with black patterns on them are perfectly safe, (same with the non-conductive foam you guys used) *however*, the metallized bags that motherboards often come in are not safe to use. Those are conductive. The Reddit comments point that out. I've learned that the hard way killing a motherboard. Also, your Pcpartpicker link in the description is broken. And the forgotten IO shield hurts.

Just to alert you it's common convention to put the ram in every other slot. So A1 is paired with B1, etc. I've no clue why this is done but it's 99 percent of the time considered the "proper" way to install multiple RAM sticks. ALSO. While cable managing certainly isn't necessary I'd personally still recommend putting all cables through the holes in the back, just to ensure they don't hit any fans, and especially when the case has a window it will avoid the big spaghetti monster being visible when looking in. Just some advice from a seasoned builder. But this is still a great tutorial to show that making a PC is a whole lot easier than people tend to think it is. If you're properly prepared it'll take no more than an hour or two out of your day at the worst!

Marcos Chavez You're correct. They need to be installed in alternating slots to run in dual-channel mode. Your ram speed is effectively cut in half if you're not running dual channel. This can affect some games and programs fairly significantly, especially with a Ryzen CPU. In certain situations you could be looking at a 10+ FPS difference if it's running in single channel. Example: motherboard has slots in this order: A1, A2, B1, B2. You want to install the RAM in slots A1 and B1 or A2 and B2.

The verge are a tech company who were doing a PC build guide and failed. Even though Brian and Jason were not perfect when it came to building the PC they did a significantly better job and they are in their mid to late 40's whereas the guy from the Verge looked like he was maximum as old as Linus from LTT (who is 32/33)

@@ModernRogue My brother once got suckered into buying a used 386 from WANG trying to install Win 3.1 off the small 1.44mb disks 6 OF THEM (about the time Zip disks and Jazz drives were coming out), then a 33.6kb modem before 56k tech were out the screeching then my girlfriends kid does some SouthPark stuff in a chat box on AOL and I'd get kicked off for ''scrolling'? Can't say then were the good old days but I don't miss those AOL disks popping up in the mail kinda how Apple is polluting the planet but "We can''t fix it we'll give you a discount on a trade-in (I'm sure they might go through your files because it's now their property again!)

@@ModernRogue A 486 should have had a ZIF socket unless it was some hokey-ass 486SL-25 really-a-386 crap. A DX/50 would've been ZIF. All the 386s had "Low Insertion Force" or LIF sockets. Those were the ones where you put it over the pins, hope to hell you lined them up right, and shove the chip in. And to get it back out you had this thing that looked like a comb to yank the chip back out. (The SL chips were mostly used in laptops because battery power.) The bad old days. Says the guy who's spent more money on some old computer parts than the new ones that replaced them. *sigh*

I remember when I would dumpster dive with my dad behind business parks in the 90's to grab old corporate gear before integrators would buy old or dead machines back for recycling. We'd load up the car with as many as we could grab, and cannibalize enough parts along with add in cards we'd find open box or heavily rebated from CompUSA. A lot used to be trial and error as to what was compatible back then, you'd spend hours diagnosing problems only to realize you needed to move a jumper and you'd even find yourself needing to write your own drivers from time to time. Now, I built, cable managed, and killed all the Microsoft telemetry on my rendering/encoding/gaming rig in less than 3 hours, and have dozens of times the computer power of our entire old basement full of parts, and I have integrated audio good enough to make a SoundBlaster nearly pointless. Getting easier is an understatement.

I mean, there were a couple mistakes but nothing major. RAM slots were wrong, which is a minor performance loss but really no big deal. Was a great introductory video for people new to the hobby.

honestly when i built my PC it took forever online searching to figure it all out. i did some custom programing and overclocking but this is probably the best comprehensive tutorial ive ever seen. long time modern rogue fan hacking the system fan and all that jazz. you guys keep doing you!! great job!

dont follow this guide though. example the RAM, dont put them next to eachother, as then you loose dual channel. Check out Bitwit, or TwoJayzCents. they make good pc videos, and do build videos as well. Check them out!

If the rx 570 wasn't so expensive due to crypto miners, it would be a great choice. If someone reading wants a gaming pc with similar performance the gtx 1050 ti is a great buy for less than 150. Or you can get a gtx 770 or 780 used for about the same price, just be aware that those cards use a lot of power.

by any memes necessary the 1050 ti has risen in price to about 190-200 dollars minimum Meanwhile the rx 560 4gb 1024 bit version is currently at around 150-160, but runs about 10% worse

The length of the PCI-E slot does not directly indicate the speed, you can have an 8x slot and a 16x slot be the exact same length.

This is a great newbie thing. This episode would've been so helpful last year when I was studying for the CompTIA A+ certification. And now that I have that certification, the lack of esd straps are raising all my anxieties about inadvertently breaking expensive electronics.

For those interested: The video-cables come with the MONITOR, not the GPU. Also: Before mounting the motherboard, install the shiny bracket that comes with it! It shields your motherboard from dust and possible electrical shock! (Hence why it's called an IO-shield)

I went back to college a couple of years ago (4-5). One of the classes that I took, that I loved was a class that taught us how to build a computer from the ground up, and be able to troubleshoot and teardown and replace parts in a normal PC tower computer.

I was just wondering if you were going to do a PC building episode. Great work guys. Entirely entertaining and informative. I actually just built my first pc, a x299 intel system I turned into a hackintosh I finally got working. It's cool to watch others build computers

Except they were given the stuff for free by AMD, don't really think they had a choice in the matter. Though, NVIDA probably would have come through with the whole GPP debacle, they could use some good PR

I don't disagree, hell I enjoy gaming on my PC, but it's hard for me to even recommend someone get into PC gaming till GPU and RAM prices stabilize. Both AMD and NVIDA have been being hit with prices skyrocketing cause of the miners. and the mention of them being sent the stuff was at 0:46, it's also on screen saying "they gave us free stuff, but didn't pay for an endorsement"

My sister and I both built pcs and it's one thing we bond together. We play once in a while, because she plays a lot with her friends me being 6 years older, and I'm glad it was one thing we did together and do together.

Just great :) But actually bothering to add the written notes was a great touch. :D Man this is a great video. They used to come in green. PCI bridge. If I didn't do PC repairs I would have no clue what you are talking about. So good. :) And you can't have a proper PC build if you don't forget to put in the Motherboard bracket. I was wondering the entire video when you are going to notice it. :)

I genuinely don't think you guys have posted a video that isn't somehow related to my hobbies. While I know how to build PCs still fun to watch. Seriously, this channel is gold. Also, you can ground yourself by touching the metal walls inside the case if you aren't wearing the ESD band.

Thanks *hugs* I've been using this current PC for nearly five years now, and my nephew in law built it as his "let's see if I can put this 5h!7 together!" build, and I love it. Now, I live in a cornfield and can't play online... but I never would've thought I could traverse Skyrim's grandest "real-scenery" mods in my life. As an old critter, it saved my soul. Don't doubt what you can do, and uh... if it sparks, back away quickly. Keeping in mind that electricity tends to run at the speed of light, so best be quick. Still, best of thanks to all

Could have left all alone, and pressed F12 and selected the USB drive to boot from. :) Typing while watching. ;) Building a PC is still a work of art. Regardless if you belittle the task. However, many (like myself) go a bit more extreme than the basic CPU, Mobo, Ram, Video card install. You must be very careful installing the mobo and not short out the bottom with the stand-off posts. Plus, making everything very neat on the inside shows passion and pride of your workmanship of your build. Adding cool multi-color LEDs adds a nice genuine touch to the build or get LED RAM. Some mobo's have this feature built-in. This is what I do. I've been an I.T. Professional for 29 years and my motto is; Purpose, Passion and Pride. Always. 21:55 That the typical "I have no idea what you're doing" build. Every serious PC builder Dots their "i"s and crosses their "T"s. The € prompts are noted and appreciated :) I enjoy the beginners and extra information just as much as the (very frequent) DON'T BE STUPID prompts ^^ Whatever you screw together, set all screws before you tighten any and then tighten them afterwards, maybe even from different corners like changing wheels on a car (use a torque wrench on your car btw, it is saftey relevant!) Nice episode, well done!

When they don't put their ram in dual channel mode, press down the CPU, touch the thermal paste, forget the I/O shield, and bend the mobo... I almost cried! The vid was better than The Verge's video... I wouldn't recommend you use this to build your own PC however this was still an entertaining video!

Honestly this is fantastic. Two adult men that don't know a lot about computers building a computer. AND they don't try to make us believe that they know what they're doing (Aside some stuff). Still mountains better than The Verge's one. Mistakes were made, But at least we know that they aren't trying to shove down our throats that they absolutely right in what they're doing.
