Great project! I will consider building it but without the gliding system, but the cup holder will be a must! Thanks for the inspiration!

Good idea sliding the chair down those ramps. I was afraid it might turn into a disaster but it turned out well. I hope your friend appreciates your efforts in building this chair for them.

I always film those potential disasters. Can't remember the exact project, but I once had a large heavy cabinet fall down off the assembly table, and I got it all on film. Human nature kicked in and I claimed the drop was to "test the strength of the wheels," but thankfully for my integrity I did finally roger up to the foible. Prior to that I was always too lazy to get out the ramps, but since that incident I've kept those ramps at the ready in the shop. Yep, I think my friend likes her new glider, and my wife actually likes the two prototypes we built, and has moved them into the house. Yep, to go along with a new rustic country look she has created for the great room. Thanks for watching, and hope to see you again next week.

Wow! I am thoroughly impressed by this build. I think your design turned out better than the one one the internet. Theirs would have had the drink holders back too far. Your design had the drink right there at arms reach where it ought to be. The drop down arm rest/drink holder was may favorite part of this build as you can imagine. I saw that you said that the War Department has had you move the two prototypes into the house. I am surprised that she hasn't asked for one of these for your porch or deck. It is definitely your best outdoor seating that you have come up with. The best I can do is spray paint a few hand-me-down wicker chairs and I needed help with that. I watched the first of the last two of Leo's videos today. It just fascinates me how he is transferring the designs he has on paper to the actual finished product.

Impressed!! I'm glad. Might get a tail on this video later, as I think folks are kind of interested in them. I think it did turn out okay, but I must thank the prototypes. As you remember, we invested two full Memphis Mondays to learning how to build the thing. Dropping into this volcano without the practice and lessons learned from those two weeks would have been at least funny. So as it turned out my friend didn't have to settle for the "first one I ever built," which is always a concern of mine. In Leo's video two he finishes the bow sections, dry fits them, but installation isn't until next time. He is under the gun I think, as a new framing party is organizing and he needs to be ready. You are sure right about those lofting plans. Simply transferring the lines to the lofting floor was a major deal, but now converting those lines into real (and heavy) wood is at another level. That boat was originally built in a shipyard specializing in wooden ships, with all the equipment, personnel, and specialized knowledge to complete the job in a year or two. The fact that Leo has taken this adventure on is amazing; if he completes his "mission" he will be legend.

@@MemphisApplegateYou never know. One of those online magazines may find this video and push it out to the world and it will get a million views. It definitely deserves it. I bet you are on a first name basis with the folks at Lowe's. You have to be one of their best customers with all the prototypes you build. Have any of them ever asked you about what you are building? You are making progress. Not once did you say that you didn't think Leo would be completing the Tally Ho. Leo has to be a natural born craftsman/artist but he must have had some amazing training with his time as an apprentice boat builder. He can't be much more than his early 30s, if that old, and he has spent a significant part of that time sailing. Not many men would have the complete knowledge that he has to the point that he can undertake every aspect of this build. That being said, I realize that he is only sharing what he wants us to see. For all we know, he has an 80 year old master boat builder guiding his every move from the background.

@@PidasianHippie Leo is the complete deal, that is, he has the skill, courage, perseverance, showmanship, charisma, etc. etc. to make it so far. I think this is about as profound a notion a 72 year old woodworker can have. Leo has the skill, but so do many others. Leo's main asset is that he is extremely personable; people like him and so volunteer their property and time. I'm trying to be personable like Leo, so I won't say it is mission impossible. I'm trying to learn to be positive, so I won't say that I fear there will be a serious accident. I'm trying to stay in my lane and not suggest that the whole project will end due to the ever evolving situations of all the folks involved, realizing that the longer the project lasts the more impact full will be the evolution. .

@@MemphisApplegate You are very personable and are very positive as a rule. Like I said, there may be things happening off screen that we aren't seeing. You may be the wise one. However, It still wouldn't surprise me if he makes it to the completion of Tally Ho. There may be some corporate sponsors that we are not aware of.

Memphis, invest in an engine hoist from Harbor Freight. I saved my back many times lifting heavy items. Easy to lift benches into my truck or trailer.

This appears to be made from treated deck boards, but that could be the lighting effect. I'm not wild about working with treated lumber, but it does help keep things from rotting quick. I have a customer who wanted me to build one from an old flimsy headboard from an old bed, but I had to pass on that idea in favor of making the back section from the same material as the seat and so on. The headboard has 3 separate octagon post pieces holding things together and I'd never match those not to mention how flimsy the whole thing is in the first place.

I don't have any plans or drawings, but I can tell you that my design doesn't sit well. It is simply not comfortable. I suggest you go with a designer who is more proud of their work. I'm not so proud of this design.

@@MemphisApplegateawww buddy...I think you are being too hard on yourself. What part isn't comfortable? I suspect you mean the back rest...it's placement probably simply needs adjustment...everyone has different needs based on their body shape. Perhaps for future reference start with a straight back with a curved piece cut, taken a seat and have some place/mark the position for customisation. It certainly looks comfortable.

should i use white pine to make this chair? If I choose white pine, what will I lose compared to yellow pine?

White pine is a little stronger than yellow pine. Cedar, Teak, or Cypress also work fine, but both teak and mahogany are budget killers.

@MemphisApplegate
@MemphisApplegate 5 жыл бұрын
I don't use plans exactly. In this case I built a couple of prototype glider chairs, and once I was satisfied with them, they became my plans. Seems like the second version of anything is always better than the first, so I rely on prototypes a lot for design and practice. However, there are plans for glider rockers available on the internet, but part of the fun for me is coming up with my own design. Thanks for watching.
