Building a Greenhouse in the Boreal Forest OFF GRID with My Family, Hailstorm, Arctic Acres

My family starts building a cedar geodesic growing dome greenhouse with help from Arctic Acres at our off grid wilderness homestead. Despite heavy rain and hail, we get the cedar dome erected and start installing the clear panels before the weather turns even worse, stopping us from finishing. Tune in next week as we complete the build and start finishing the interior in preparation for growing season.

I loved the fact that this was a family project, with help from Arctic Acres, with a campout thrown in. Many memories built along with a great functional structure. This is a wonderful example of a "Self Reliant" family. Much Respect Sir !!!

I worried about you working alone so much. just in case you get hurt. I realize your wife is videoing most of your videos now, and that's great. I had an uncle who was my Shawn but unfortunately he passed when I was in my late teens, fortunately he did teach me a lot that I use to this day.

Agreed. I think I would have been more intentional about involving my children with even the most mundane tasks while we were camping. I'm pretty sure that would have translated to some pretty good skills now. They are good people. I am grateful for that!

Merrie Hallman, I have those same thoughts. Never met a man like Shawn when I was young. Now I'm 73 and those days are not in my future. So I have much admiration and respect for anyone like that AND has a wonderful family. His videos allow me to experience it from afar.

@@earthangel8730 The BBC did an investigative study about how many people the Earth could support with current tech, current agriculture practices, and without developing new fertile soil and the number was about 10 billion people. That didn't take into account new methods such as micro gardens, urban farming, the reappropriation of land from livestock for plant-based meat substitutions. I think that what he is doing here on this channel is actually paving the way for the future. Self-sustainability and decentralization of food and resources make the Earth more scalable with population. As a young person and someone that believes in self-reliance, I cant help but envy and admire what he is doing and I appreciate that he is making this content available for everyone and also teaching the next generation. Hats off to you Shawn!

How do you keep the ridges on the panels clear or am I not seeing things properly?

@@l.m.2404 The ridge appearance you see is on the inside of the flat panels. It is largely what gives our polycarbonate its durability, and its semi-transparent look. Cleaning the interior or exterior of a dome’s paneling is a simply wipe-down procedure.

I can see this being a totally different build from the first cabin site, and for good reasons. Nothing wrong with that. You gotta do what it takes to get the job done. My late father-in-law was a horticulturist in Norway. While settling in and learning the language & culture, I worked with and for him. How I got my visa and work permit. What I learned, the experience gained, was priceless. Everyone who can should have a greenhouse. He had four very large ones, since horticulture was his business. They're worth their weight in gold. Great job Shawn, and family 🤗🇧🇻💞

Ian, dont follow your daddy's example please, there are so many role models you can rather look at, like Shawn. Be strong, find your own path, clean living ok? My children also have a daddy that is not a role model for his children, i am glad for guys like Shawn that show youngsters what can be achieved with clean living and hard work. @@starfireevony8796 my dad is a great person and there’s never been I time in my life where I thought he didn’t love me, but he’s struggled with addiction for most of his life. I’m a teenager and most of my peers are drinking and smoking but I never have and never will. Thanks for the support

My dad died from alcohol. He was only 58. It hurt, bc he was a good man and daddy, and I loved him a lot. I have 7 siblings, I'm the only one who has had one marriage. I broke the chain of addiction, with God's help, of broken marriages and all that comes with it. You can too. I know you love your dad, and it hurts. Hold on to the good, and break the chain too! God bless, and strengthen you and him.

Definitely! Growing Domes are engineered to withstand over 180km of wind, heavy hail, 7 feet of direct snow load, and filter out harmful UV rays. They’re as tough as they are beautiful, and make for very versatile spaces.

This way he can plant cold hardy crops in fall and have greens/carrots all winter. Season extension is a rather old concept. This is super rad!

What a joy.....I have to admit it; after watching you work so hard by yourself, especially on the new homestead, it is lovely to see loved ones working alongside you for a while. It’s also fun to see something that gave you results so fast! A bit easier to complete than those timber masterpieces you make.... I’m sure that you are just fine on your own(with Cali’s help) and probably prefer it, but it did feel great to watch.

Warmed my heart to see you got some help putting that greenhouse up! You’re a good man, but you’re only ONE man and those extra hands were very helpful! Little campfire, great company, filled the bellys with some good grub and continue to build, I like it! Thanks for taking us along brother, that’s going to pay for itself over and over again with the bounties you’ll be harvesting! I thought my 10x8 greenhouse was a task, that project was definitely not for beginners lol! Looking forward to seeing it complete👍🏼👍🏼

I am replacing my panels on my greenhouse they are 5 years old. The old .5cm panels were weak in hail and snow. So I bought 1cm extra strength and very happy now. Check with the manufacturer what you need for your area. No regrets having a greenhouse... food all year and very self sustainable. Have fun with the greenhouse... nice vid :) All the best . :)

Sorry my English, I am from Brazil and don't know how to write in English very well...I was watching KZfaq and out of nowhere I stopped on that channel where a man and a dog made me spend hours and hours watching the two build a cabin in the middle of nowhere in Canada, I loved it. congratulations on the beautiful work. hugs from Brazil.

There's that sweet girl! Orange dummy in tow, making sure all hands are having loads of fun tossing her toy. The V.P. of Morale is hard at work. And, needing a good nap after all that supervising. Very nice to see you getting some help. That'll really boost your drive and spirits. Campfire meals are the best too. Good looking geo-dome kit.

Seeing that dome go up, all I could think of was Buckminster Fuller, who invented the geodesic dome many years ago. He would heartily approve of your greenhouse. Some folks have nicknamed this type structure a "bucky dome" after the inventor. Great video, by the way. I await the next chapter of your adventure.
