A Spring Heat Wave and Drought in the Forest, Fish in the Garden, Metal Roof, Rainwater Harvest

After a short winter with less snow than normal, I'm now dealing with a hot, dry spring that is making it difficult to grow food and work in the forest. To collect rainwater, I install a metal roof on the solar shed. I fish the big lakes for pike and fry one in a cast iron pan over a propane stove since the forest is tinder dry and susceptible to forest fire. I use the fish remains for compost for the vegetable garden.
Moose and deer have been visiting the cabin site so I build a little more of the garden fence to protect the young trees, fruit and vegetables.

Gorgeous video. Cali has to be the happiest pup on KZfaq: Woods to explore, critters to investigate, holes to dig, and water to cavort in, with a nice human to always stop what he is doing and throw her toy. Yup...one very lucky pup.

Yes only one because I seen where Hailie Deegan the nascar truck series drivers little puppy had just had many terrible seizures and the neurological drs told her they didn't think she was going to make. And with all the prayers from her fans little Rambo pulled through and they did an update and ges alive and home and doing great. So Cali has competition for what pup is the happiest right now. But Cali is a dream dog anyone would love to have as there buddy and companion.

I rarely, if ever comment on your videos, but if there is any fairness in this world, before you're truly an old man, I hope others somewhere in some kind of academy of art, or some kind of preservationist society recognizes the efforts you've done to create such an amazing place within the wilderness, as well as your skills as a filmmaker and documentarian. Because *wow,* man. Wow.

ONe plus, it will be on youtube for his great, great grandkids to see and learn. I can only remember one of my great great grandparents and only 2 lived long enough to see me born, he taught me German among other things. With inspecting homes in rural areas, some close to 200 years old I like his building style. many old homes were built like a barn with beams then planks put around the structure, somewhere from 2 to 3 inches.Then the tar paper and wood siding. one thing, plaster walls with the wood sideways if they were nonstructural or two sides of a pocket door. Then you get into the 1910 and later with balloon frame homes and what you have now, just do not let it get wet. Just seeing what he is doing I have an idea on what the finish project will look like. For me that is the fun of this. Seeing If my guess is correct

Oh definitely! He had problems with the proximity to humans in the "old" cabin. He learned a lot and put that to great use in this build with the old cold cellar, the treatment of lumber, drainage, and (OMG) the views in the new site are precious memories of light and sounds here are awesome.

andrew sims , I dunno , I'm a bit concerned about that very sandy soil for building on. Sandy soil is often not very stable.

@@edgrills6650, Yes , sandy soil does drain well . Too well for gardening. In a garden sandy soil allows the water to just zoom through. As for building , you notice that Miami doe not have skyscrapers as New York does ? That's because in Miami they have to sink a firm foundation pretty deep for a building with any size to it. Whereas in Manhattan , not too far under the soil is solid bedrock. Haven't you ever heard the term , " shifting sands " ?

I love the melodies of the birds singing. That, alone, brings me great peace. I spend at least a 1/2 hour before I get up to listen to the birds waking up at dawn. One of God’s many gifts to us. BTW, that was awesome shots of Cali under water. You are gifted with the camera. Is there anything you can’t do?

Shawn - wow. Cali swims beautifully. Her underwater shots appear almost mythical with her coats rolling like waves. And the editing - where you ghosted in the same shot of the trees in winter cloak of snow and then standing proud when high and dry. I have to admit - this video of the surrounding areas kind of out-shined the actual construction parts. I hope that area stays wilderness for a very long time. Thanks for sharing.

Hi again SHAWN GLORIOUS photography! Trees out of rocks and pics of sweet Cali from under water! Sights and sounds of your beautiful area that has such a wonderful sense of peace and freedom... LOONS are there too! Soo happy one's awesome voice is back in your closing as I missed it so much. It was gone about the same time you had decided to leave the other cabin which spoke volumes to me of your sadness. A long time ago I had told you the story of my love of them. Now happiness is restored even beyond your own! Shown in how much you've already started and finished on your own with those two hands of yours. It has revealed how the other place was testing ground for you in the dos and donts and additions to make. This will be the place you and yours can finally call home. being Swiss, we moved to Canada, (Quebec and then Ontario) and loved it so much. We returned to Switzerland, but our hearts were still overseas. We now live in the USA, but we visit Canada as often as we can and enjoy every Minute of it. It is the dream country of sooo many and is not disappointing, if one is willing to accept changes to create a new Life. Your videos are superb and first class in every aspect.
