I keep seeing this style lid used by beekeepers that make a living off bees. I haven’t used one long term but did borrow one for a few weeks last year and wanted to build some to see if they could be a viable alternative in my bee yard. It was a quick, fun project and I think just about anyone can build it with the simplest of tools.

Good video. I build thousands of these covers. It's nice to see someone besides me talk about grain direction. I'll note, however, that boards and planks actually cup in the opposite direction to the cup of the grain not with the cup. This is trivia which won't affect the finished project. For the cleats, I prefer to hang the top cleat over the end cleat so that there is no joint on top, exposed to rain. A 1" staple through a 3/4" board nets a 1/4" penetration. I'd personally go for more. My rule of thumb is at least as much penetration as the thickness of the face material. In this case, that would be 1 1/2" minimum. TB III, good choice!

Nice simple project, I saw another channel make bottom boards in a similar design and its slick. My problem is lumber quality is garbage and expensive, I usually end up buying these ready made. Pressure treated 1x6 runs 6 bucks and shrinks back 1/4 inch in the sun. Kiln dried is 13 bucks and nearly the price of a ready made cover.. Just made two bottom boards and they are nice with materials at 6-8 bucks. I may try your pattern with pressure treated because its cheap. Some projects I use dog ear fence boards but the quality can be sketchy.

Thank you for the kind words. Yes, I sometimes buy equipment too because I have a local supplier that mass produces and makes good stuff. Part of the reason I build is that I enjoy simple woodworking projects. Thanks for watching!

like your work bench, it's the same as mine, the good old table saw.. I make the tops out of pallet lumber now, lumber at the box stores has got to pricey

For sure! It’s a great surface to use. I’ve kicked around making some type of temporary cover for assembling things but so far just scrape the glue and wax the top again. Thanks for watching.
