This is part 2 of the series where I build a CP/M 2.2 computer, with a Z80 Playground as its motherboard and a VGA32 to act as a VT100 terminal. Here I am showing off my new case that I am going to be building it into, plus the PS2 keyboards and VGA monitors that I have.

Your case for this computer has a bit of ALTAIR nostalgia vibes. :)

As another commenter suggested, the case also reminds me of the Altair 8800. It would definitely be an awesome project to turn this into a (slightly) more modern version of the Altair. But it would be a lot of work building the circuitry to interface the front-panel programming switches and LEDs with the computer. Anyway, if you haven't already started drilling, one tip I got from Steve Wagner was to design the panel layouts in a CAD or vector graphics program like Inkscape, marking the centres of the holes to be drilled and the sizes. Then print it out 1:1 and stick it onto the panel with a glue stick (or whatever it's called in the UK). You can then centre punch the holes and drill them easily, and for square holes you can punch and drill with a slightly smaller drill, then file to the line on the print-out. Once all the holes are drilled, you can use warm soapy water to get rid of the paper and clean off the glue. The main disadvantages of this is that it takes time to design the layout, and you need to wait for the glue to dry, otherwise the paper would probably just peel off.

I have thought of the Altair 8080, but the idea of drilling all those front-panel holes terrifies me. It would also be a total pain to use, and take about 2 weeks to program hello-world into it. But I would love to do it one day! Thanks for the drilling tips. I'll buy a sharp metal drill bit and give it a go.

@@CircuitBreaker256 Oh yeah, drilling all those holes would be a chore, and programming it would be super fiddly! However, I've watched videos on programming the Altair, and it gets easier once you figure out the technique and get into a rhythm. And you don't necessarily need to program the entire ROM in one go, it wouldn't be that difficult to write a small bootloader that would allow you to boot programs from another medium like the serial port. Famously, Microsoft's Paul Allen wrote the bootloader for the Altair on the flight from Boston to Albuquerque, which loaded their BASIC software off paper tape. But I get it, building an Altair clone is totally not the goal of this project. I just thought of the Altair because of the case. Anyway, if you're going to pick up some drill bits, definitely get an automatic centre punch. You'll have no chance getting your holes lined up without one. And double-check the punch mark is in the right spot before you drill, it's easy to get it off by a fraction of a millimetre, making your holes look misaligned. You can "walk" the punch mark into place by punching the mark at an angle towards the correct point. Unless, of course, you want to trigger all the OCD people in your audience. Myself included!

When will you have more boards available? Can you release the gerber files so we can order boards?

Hi - part 2 looks good. Before you cut up the blue panel have a think of these 2 ideas Front panel,. find a old PC XT/AT/386 and see if you can remove the power on off or turbo buttons and use them, some time you can remove a square unit with the CPU speed and the 2 buttons, reset will be fine being a momentary switch , but the turbo being on/off switch can be used for power At the rear, there are plenty of ISA black ?? backing panes that have PS2 connectors - they were common when changing from old PC XT - AT keyboard din connectors to a upgrade eg 386/486, as the keyboard din was no longer used it just remained a hole in the box, but you had a rear case isa slot connectors that took the PS2 , you can even use one if you have 2 serial ports and put a 25 or 9 pin serial or parallel port if your system supports it You can get them for VGA as well - if you dont have one or use a 9 pin serial and just elongate it ( i think 9 pin serial is the same as the TTL / CGA / EGA 9 pin - VGA had 15 pins but i cant recall if the D-shell is larger USB can go front or back - but i find some times if the USB is at the rear it is awkward to get to but more importantly you push the pc back to clean it or adjust its location and risk damaging the port and stick - unless you have a very short USB stick - i have one for a think client that is about 20-25mm long Both of these option will be neater and use of the shelf parts, many obsolete and hopefully cheap / free. Also they are more practical as you will be cutting rectangles rather than complex shapes Regards George
