Building a vintage style electric minibike in an afternoon

Everything came in only two shipments and it only took a few hours from unboxing to riding. If you're looking for a fun project that you can complete quickly and enjoy forever a mini bike is a wonderful idea.

Good day, change your controller to 48v 150 amp, add and additional battery leave the gearing as is. Should be doing burnouts and wheelies with a top speed of around 30mph.

What a fun little build. Stick with the stock gearing and get yourself a 48V lithium-ion ebike battery. That'll get you a ≈30% increase in speed thanks to the motor Kv and increased voltage. Check the controller to see if it's stamped for a voltage range before connecting it. If not, you can pick up inexpensive ebike controllers that will handle 48V. That will save you considerable weight as well.

I just picked up a used mini bike frame and was thinking of going electric with it for my kid. That 36 volts and 1000 watts seems like more than enough for a 5 year old.

Sweet video and mini bike. I just upgraded my sons Razor Sx500 from 36v 500w motor to 60v 2000w brushless motor. It does about 32mph. The extra torque and speed makes it so much fun to ride. If you’re debating the upgrade, just do it!!

I had one just like that when I was a kid in the late 60’s, still got it too, I remember that it just had a piece of steel tubing welded across the frame about where you have those piece of junk foot pegs. Good luck with it. 😊

Wrap the frame with some radiator hose where the pegs mount and it will not slip anymore. Don't put pipe across if possible. When you turn tight and catch the ground you will know why i say this. Insta bail.

Hey, just FYI.... You can get 72v 3000w motors for those, I have a 48v 2000w set up and I can do 30+mph¡!

My first minibike was an Azusa. Those brakes literally just don’t work. The pegs are bad but I’ve kept them on for a couple years for some reason

I purchased the drive unit from Studz (link updated in the description). If I were to do it again I would just buy the parts direct from Mega Moto.

It’s from a Mega Moto E1000. I bought it all as a used pull but they don’t have any left anymore.

The Azusa minibike kit was just under $600 shipped, and the electric driveline was ~$400 used. I'm hoping to be able to offer a similar electric driveline in the $500 price range very soon!

Add another 12v battery...most of these motor esc combos can handle an extra 12v

Yup, need to get to 48 volts, preferably using Lithium Ion to keep weight down - you mentioned UPS batteries so that's your problem. Some of those controllers have a regen braking feature, worth checking the spec. Love the mk1 Insight by the way.

First! ha ha, good deal ! I'll be curious to see how fast you can make her rip. Are those little lithium batteries? How long does a charge last? I think those E-bikes use like a 48 volt system, maybe you can add another 12 volts?

YO! What up Tim! They're just standard 12v 7AH AGM batteries, same as you find in a UPS PC backup. Some LiPo/Fe cells would be a RIOT for sure!! I've yet to run the battery all the way down, I need to put an hour meter or ODO on there and see what she'll do. I do want to turn it up to 48v next, I have the battery, just need the speed controller ($15 on Amazon) and we'll see if the motor melts down. Every failure is a chance to upgrade IMO.

I bought the driveline used from a place but they sold out quick. We’re actively working on recreating the entire package and will hopefully have something available by Christmas! Stay tuned and thanks for watching!!

Overvolt it to 60v and 3000w and send er bud. I've put 6000w to one of those 36v motors and it didn't get close to overheating
