Building an electric bike isn't easy, especially when using unconventional electronics, such as a drone motor. After 3 years of development, I have a bike that I'm finally happy with... but who knows what I'll change next...

You have to rewind those cheap motors anyway with thicker wire for efficiency, and to modulate kV, dependent on the windings-number.

Fascinating discussion and demonstration. By the way, Harley Davidson uses the two belt system, with the motor driving the tranny, and the second belt driving the rear wheel. I wonder if it's to make up for an underpowered motor.
@juggernautz
@juggernautz 2 жыл бұрын
Harley designed the 2 belt system to reduce sideways torque and its a lot quieter. A 1200cc Harley has 85 horsepower and up. The 125 cubic inch engine produces 130hp. Similar hp to a Toyota Prius. Custom engines can be 2.5 liter or 3 liter beasts. Also a large rear sprocket increases power too. For a 1000 pound bike they haul arse!

I built a display similar to yours, which keeps track of amps and volts (watts) vs time, so the battery charge can be tracked. It also allows converting the controller from a speed control throttle to a watts controlled throttle, as you mentioned you did. I like that, it is more motorcycle like and you can then set preset power assist wattage amounts- speed might change but watts can stay at the preset level. My motor is a Bafang BBSHD with the internal controller.

I think you are spot on with this video, as well as your assumptions on your audience. I’ve gasping at name brand electric bike prices and what you get for the money. Of course there is trial and error + hundreds of hours work involved in doing this DIY, but when it’s a hobby, all that matters is the enjoyment (and cost of parts). The idea that I can convert my existing bike to electric is tempting in so many ways, and your videos have shown that while it is a lot of work, it’s not black magic.

This video has given me a ton of inspiration and ideas. One of which being using the crank as the speed controller, either by using an encoder directly, or passing the crank through a back sprung differential with a potentiometer mounted to the differential bell. The latter would allow for you to use another pot on the handlebars to set the max amount of electric assist, and your additional pedal pressure while cycling normally would propel you forward electrically. This way you would still have to cycle for the sake of working out, but you would get additional range and some help up the steepest hills. This could motivate some to get on the bicycle seat more often.

A word of warning, I've heard of people in the uk getting pulled over by the police. If your ebike is over 250w you can get done for no insurance, no road tax, no Mot, driving a vehicle with no registration and depending on if you have a motorcycle licence etc. Otherwise this is frikkin awesome.

What 500nickp says is true. Max 250w and can only assist and not be throttle controlled. Otherwise it is classed a motorbike with all the legal implications. Which is a big shame!

Not only that, your creation will be sent to the crusher. What would be much worse is if some idiot inspired by your video mows down a pedestrian in town or whatever, as people don't expect bicycles to be that fast. You should pull the video and work on something legal.

Hi Tom, Really nice video recab of your learning curve during the build of your own ideal electric bike. I can imagine your feeling of gratification when you had reached your desired result after 3 years of work. It's not about having an electric bike, then you just buy one, its about knowing how everything works and creating your own optimal design. Pushing your own knowledge to get the most out of every mechanical and electrical detail for optimal results. People who even take time to create a video about there years of work and contribute by sharing their knowledge deserve at least a thumb up. Again, impressive piece of engineering Tom, thanks for sharing. Not one second of my time was wasted watching this video.

Yep. This is why I watch this video for the 11th time. There is no e-bike without some drawbacks I don't want. I'm investigating building a bike that can take cargo and possibly be charged with solar, that can be locked in a way that no one would like to put the effort into stealing it.

Always great to see innovation and enthusiasm on your videos, but in this case it's a shame that legality of elexctric bikes isn't discussed at all so encouraging people to build bikes which are illegal to use in the UK - anything above a 250W motor with an assistance cut-off at 15mph would make the bike a motorcycle and need a licence and insurance as such.
@robmac3702
@robmac3702 4 жыл бұрын
Agree with this comment completely. Please say that these are private roads otherwise what you are doing is illegal. Also, as this is a new kit, a throttle is also illegal. I do like how you are designing new ways for an electric bike but maybe look at being more efficient by powering the crank rather than just the rear wheel. There are kits out there for a crank with a freewheel in them so when powering the crank, the crank arms wont spin.

@@rodrigoc.goncalves2009 Whilst that is very true, as a working engineer, one of the main prorities of a task is to design something which is in the confines of your local laws. After that, design using best practices such as British Standards and ISO's. There are many people hot rodding ebikes on youtube but one of the main reasons many people watch Stanton is for the informative and logical approach. By not putting in a disclaimer in the video he is putting himself at risk of prosecution which isn't very logical and may stop the great video output that we can expect to watch from him.

A handy conversion to supplement the magical "10" number is that peak torque approximately = current * 9.5 / KV . If you're comparing motor and pulley combos at the same current, you will get the relationship Tom found.
