My Self Reliance

My Self Reliance

3 жыл бұрын

With an abundance of dying trees on my properties, building an underground root cellar with charred timbers makes more sense than using concrete and rocks. Burning the wood makes it more resistant to decay from moisture and insects. My vegetable garden is overflowing with food and I need a place to store it immediately and longterm, along with fish and game from the surrounding Canadian wilderness.

S Singh, you are right..... I am an old woman and have seen a lot of this world and have gone through very, very hard times. In my younger years I was an executive Secretary and saw what was going on. Giving all that up, and became a housewife and Mother, I enjoyed every (sometimes very hard) minute. Looking back I have to say, Life is too short to spend it on things one does not enjoy. One needs very little to be happy and content....

We're rooting for your root cellar. If more people understood the virtue of self reliance it would be a much better place. Too many people now rely on the government or someone to take care of them. They have many excuses as to why their situation is someone else's fault, and they are envious of those who worked hard to get ahead.

Many of us get up, go to work, fight traffic, deal with too many people, wear masks, worry about our future, wonder if things will ever get better. Then, as hoped for, many of us get a notification that our friend Shawn has uploaded another video. We can then escape for awhile to watch and especially learn from a man who seems to know something about everything. A man who loves and respects the land and nature (barred owl, how cool), and loves and prepares a beautiful place for he and his family. I really appreciate how you show affection for your pup (aka job site supervisor), it gets me doing more of the same with ours, she is 13 now. Shawn all the hard work you do to make this a real joy to watch is greatly appreciated more than you know. You truly are a jack of all trades, and master of all it seems, you make hard work look like fun, which it often is. You live in some of the most beautiful country i have ever seen. I wish I had your morning commute. Greetings from West Michigan.

That is damn impressive. I follow a few 'homesteading" self-reliance type channels and I am struck by how often they refer to your channel, so you must be doing something right. I think the young couple at Talesbuan might benefit from your expertise as they have been trying to build a root cellar for some time. Simple Living Alaska also recently had to "undo" their last attempt at a root cellar, although they did a mighty fine job - they were just done in by a high water table. It's exciting to watch you all living your dreams in such beautiful surroundings, especially for those of us who live "trapped" in urban jungles - wishing we could breath clean air and eat our own tomatoes. Keep up the good work!

hi well i am always enjoying your videos i am the English man in China, i am a 57 year old disabled person with multiple scleroses.. i wish that i could have known about this way of life when i was 30 as this would have been good for me. Cali is lovely and very laid back. i hope in the future you would consider getting a bee hive, then you would have a good way of pollinating you flowers veg and fruit trees. but it is nice to listen and watch your journey, from a hectic life to a more natural and some what more fulfilling. please keep it going as i am one of thousands who enjoy watching your story of self reliance. it is good to see that you adapt to the change of what is important in life and what is necessary to you. i am waiting to see how you build the green house. the way you built the root seller was wonderful and intuitive using old methods that the Japanese used over many year. so please try and show as much of each build as possilbe as i am a fan of learning old and new techniques, again many thanks Andy

Ya know what shawn, I used to be just like you. Built my own log cabin, root cellar, wood shop. I had this big forest garden that was filled with vegetable's. I even had a dog that followed me around all over my property. Eventually I had to wake up and roll my lazy butt out of the bed. great vid as always!

Looking good mate. The owl seems pretty interested in you. You know with the big zukinies you cut them length wise, 3/4 down, scoop out the middle, fill with minced or diced meat and vegies. Put the lid on and place in say, your pizza oven and bake. It cooks the food wonderfully and gives flavour to the stew....thanks again for a wonderful vid...love Kelly.....

Joseph Sauve what were those Jurassic Park greens Shawn pulled up, not cabbage, and I don’t believe it’s greens harvesting season, isn’t that the one you wait for a cold frost? Wish grandmothers, and mama were alive to see these videos of the garden...boy would they holler about the size and quantity, and they’d probably have good advice on things he had questions about growing.

Cali is such a comedian, every so often, especially when Shawn is explaining some technical detail, she jogs across the field behind him with one of those orange dummy things in her mouth, then 10 minutes later, she comes back across from the other direction , still 100 ft behind Shawn. LOL. Doesn't turn her head to look at Shawn or the camera. It just cracks me up.

Slowly but surely, you build a think that will last a lifetime or more. Watching you create the beams to slot together so well makes me appreciate the labor & skill required. It will be a thing of beauty buried & mostly unseen, but solid & valuable because it protects the food you work so hard to obtain.

I’ve garden my entire life and have trained as a Master Gardener. I have never seen abundance like you have achieved particularly in light if it being the first year. Although you have added compost, forest soil is very weak in growing nutrients but your plants flourish. And, perhaps due to Cali, it has not become a wild animal feeding station. Everything you do is impressive but this garden is way up on the list of great work. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I have watched all your vlog but never written. The way you hacked out such a beautiful garden from the forest in one season was wonderful to watch. Since it looks like you are building a village, I always wonder what it would be like to have a village of friends and family work party for a week, to help you build the village. I know you are self sufficient, but you are building a village, haha. I always feel calm after watching your vlog, it is so beautifully done and favorite is you are not preachy but educational. Cali and her fetching duties entertain millions! Yours is my #1 and #2 is Simple Living Alaska. All the best to you and yours and thank you for sharing.
