Hi! Thanks for visiting the Channel!
In this video, we take a look at the Tamiya 1/350 USS Enterprise from 1984.
It is a kit of massive size and length, and therefore hard to film, but I tried to give you an impression of how this kit performs and what you get for your money.

Looks great! Thanks for taking the time to video the build. I have the same kit in my collection and look forward to the day I can focus on completing it along with over one hundred other kits I’ve purchased in the past. 1/350 scale for ships is my favorite, 1/48 in aircraft, 1/35 armor and 1/25 in cars. For my ships I’ve always ordered the full Photo-etched kits that were available at the time. I do have the kit for this ship along with extra aircraft I purchased from Tamiya. I believe the photo-etched kits I have came from Gold Metal Models. I’m giving you a 👍 and sub!

I built this ship kit a few years ago. Had fun! Went crazy with it. Photo etch, all the fun. I got it about 90% done then disaster happened. It got knocked off the table, and was really messed up. I tried fixing it, but the photo etch was wrecked, decking came off, island too. Was sad to just put it in a closet. Some day I will attempt to repair it again.

Awesome build, I built a similar 1/350th USS Enterprise from Monogram in the late 1970's with the original dome on the island, the hull was one piece, it was a fun and easy build for a 13 yr old, but when it came to the painting, I was still a novice, so decades later, I want to build another one and this time, convert the model into an RC.

I expected more from this kit. I have one at the starting gate. It is near X-mas in 2021 & I had got this kit a couple of years ago because of the movie "Big" in which it had it's debut as it had just been released. I also was lucky enough to actually visit the carrier during port of call in Mombasa, Kenya back in 77'. Also spent the night on the Enterprise as it was too late to catch a landing craft to my boat. I served on the U.S.S. Tautog. A fast attack submarine operating with the fleet. We to the craft to the carrier then caught a regular small boat to shore. Mombasa is also where Roland the headless Thompson gunner caught up to tha SOB Van Owen in song by Warren Zevon.

@@funinscale2892 The Crusader (built by Vought) and the Corsair II (built by LTV -- Ling-Temco-Vought) have a similar appearance though side-by-side the slender, lengthy fuselage of the F-8 is really apparent. Two fine aircraft. The F-8 was the " Last of the Gunfighters" for the USN and loved by the pilots who flew them. The A-7 served well in the attack role alongside the Intruder for the Navy and in the USAF inventory until both were replaced in U.S. service.

I've got one of these plus a full compliment of 90 odd aircraft I had ordered on top (and I think also the photo etch kit? not sure on that). My intention was to fully light the interior and have all the hangar doors open and have the flight deck and hangar deck populated with aircraft. Got halfway through it before having a spate of dodgy landlords only giving 6 month leases and lost momentum for the project with the constant moving. It sits somewhwere in my spare room half complete, hopefully I still have all the parts, also have the 1/48 B1. that thing is huge, also half built. I keep telling myself... one day...

Thanks! Sometimes i dont treat those sink marks at all when they are hardly visible after installation of certain parts, but sometimes i sand or fill them after filming so if there are ugly cut marks or similar while filming it must not mean they are still there when the model is finished :-) The mold is older, though, so there are quite a few things which you would not see on modern kits

Great video!!! Think that Tamiya would have included clear plastic for the windows on the island. Anyway, have always wanted to build this kit myself, have even had it in my grubby hands a few times in various hobby shops, but would always place it back on the shelf for whatever reason. Have seen this kit priced at around US $75.00 a few times, but more likely around US $120.00+. IMAGE if Tamiya ever updated this kit to "modern" tooling/standards????
@funinscale2892
@funinscale2892 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I am glad you like it! for 75 dollars, it would be a great value, in my opinion, but the "usual" price of over 100 dollars, mostly much more than 130 dollars, is too much for this. I'm not sure if they would redo it in modern tooling because, knowing Tamiya, it would cost 300 dollars or something, and i dont think there would be many people buying this. maybe make a new version of a sister ship and adding some PE parts and a little more adequate planes

I did not have the original painting guide because i got the kit 2nd hand, and also an instruction only in japanese, so i couldn't find information on decal placement or painting the stripes, and the photos of the deck are very inconsistent, sometimes, the dots on deck are white, sometimes they are deck coloured, sometimes there is a yellow and white stripe inbetween the white markings, I wasn't sure what to do exaclty or where to put which decal (there were only minor ones like the black and yellow strips around the elevators), so i preferred to keep it simple. I forgot to ask you this, do you know why some US Navy ships have a golden anchor? All the ship that I was on never had a golden anchor. If you don't know, I'll tell you, let me know.
@funinscale2892
@funinscale2892 3 жыл бұрын
I think it is due to the material, the anchor would probably be made from a material that is resistant to oxidising like the propellers, and as they are mostly over water, they may have painted it for camouflage, but modern ships dont spend that much time on camouflage because with radar and satellites, ships can be hidden anyway. But im not sure. do you know?

@@funinscale2892 yes i do. In fact its an award to the ship for retention of personal for that fiscal year.

@@chrisC052 Does this mean the ship is retired, or crewmen of the ships retired?
@chrisC052
@chrisC052 3 жыл бұрын
@@funinscale2892 no. It means a large portion of the crew re-enlisted to stay in the navy. Its recognition for the re-enlistment rate.

@@chrisC052 Ah, very interesting. so a golden anchor distinguishes a good ship with high crew morale! And the ships you were on didn't have golden anchors? so not very comfortable ones then? :-)

The huge decal you placef on the portside hull is WRONG!!!! That decal should have been on the other side of the island not the hull.

Thanks for the hint, i saw this on a picture, but it must have been a model as well that got it wrong like i did! so next time it goes on the island. i wondered why it would only be on the left hull side though

Just looked at my comment some weeks ago. I tend to be TO blunt sometimes. This was one of those times! I deeply apologise for that. Ilove your vidios because you seem to just LOVE what your doing! I build for the same reason and have learned a lot from your vidios.

@@jerrymccrae7202 Everyone can have their opinion, you can criticise everything you would have done differently. I just dont like those people who throw around insults as comments on my videos. They seem to grow in population. But i can live with them, as long as there are people like you who always come back watching my videos and enjoying them! Thanks!

ok I have to ask why did you place a 65 at her bow? Carriers are not like frigates, Destroyers, or Cruiser's. they have No numbering at the bow. the number is port and starboard on the Island.
