Building drive is one of the most important things we do. Dogs must want to work and enjoy the work if we want them to perform. I use toys and treats along with praise to build a dogs drive and to reward it. In this video I show a toy called a Lotus Ball to build drive with Jimi our black Labrador Retriever. Jimi has great food drive, but not much toy drive. Using the Lotus Ball I am able to get Jimi more excited and engage much better to the training. I will use this in obedience training and many people will use this toy in agility training as well.

I felt that when he tried to play tug and the dog just dropped the toy, I'm glad my dog isn't the only one!

My lab is insanely food driven but my SDiT , a GSD/husky, is why I'm looking this up because he is over treats pretty much. He's such a good boy, just trying to find the trick to really get him in the right mode

This is a great idea I didn't have the toy but I improvised they took a bandana, rolled it up and tied a knot in it, and then tucked the treat in the fold of the knot. So far it's working. I have a redbone/red tick cross that is very soft and I'm trying to show her that play and drive is fun.

Great idea. I use food for obedience to keep drive lower and once the ball on a rope comes out She has no interest in the food. Great dog to show the drive differences. Oh I checked out your web site. Brilliant what you have done for all the dogs. On their behalf thank you . : )

I honestly think you've saved me with this video!! MY lab acts EXACTLY like Jimmy, and it can be hard to get her to engage with some behaviours and toys. I have watched countless videos on how to get my dog more engaged with training, and nothing so far has worked because the dogs they use as examples are so far from my dog's personality. I seriously appreciate this, I'm going out to buy a lotus toy (or make one!) right away and start integrating it into our work!

So will this get my dog interested in any ball after I do these types of drills with her? If I try to switch over to a different ball from the Otis ball is my dog going to realize that’s not the treat ball so he ends up not working for it?

Hello, Great videos, I have a 1 year old Belgian malinois. He is not food driven at all. I am having trouble training him/finding things that he is excited about for a reward. What can I do to get him excited about learning. He does love tug as most Mel's. Thanks

Can you give me tips about a dog that gets overly excited when petted? My dog gets way too excited and start pushing against your legs, walking in circles around the person and or himself. Ive been trying to quit and leave when he does that and only give him a quick rub when he is relaxing on the floor. I do that thinking im rewarding relaxed behaviour.... Should i try a different approach?

Thank you for taking the time to respond. The problem I have is I messed up the intro to the shot on my Springer Spaniel and I was hoping that increased drive through the use of a high value treat in one of these balls might change how she associates the shot and the chase. Thanks again .. great channel for all of us dog people.

My two PART lab and Part Blue Heelers are so full of DRIVE that it is a bit scary. We are building a tiny room to their paddock for cooling their jets, getting ONE of them in the little room to leash and work with without the two of them engaging in this MASCULINE slobbery show when we go out to their paddock and without the VERY REAL FEAR of them getting out and running madly around where cats, kittens and bunnies and squirrels have normally some safety. This has happened quite a few times. Grins. Me and hubby are freaking out trying to catch them while part of us is wowed by their powerful grace and speed. We look like and feel like idiots. !!AND we LIVE in the boonies on 5 acres. No way will we allow our dogs running willy nilly. No way. One night, recently, while we were getting them out of their paddock, Jack managed to SQUEEZE through a corner 6" gap in the side of the gate. Unbelievable. Truly!! Dog toothpaste. I was running to get to the gate to help hubby manage these two numbskulls and watched as I ran Jack halfway through that gap. No lower body in sight. I couldn't stop laughing even through the flying tackle! I made it even though my SLIDE in the dirt tore my knee up a little bit! Still doubling over in laughter. Our goal is REDUCING their drive, which mostly comes from training, routine, constancy and maturity. Jack and Zip are almost 3 years old. Maturity is happening. Easily seen and had during our couch training sessions!! The couch is an incredible tool!!

Hi. Love your videos!! I’m having an issue with my 2 year old female German Shepard. We have two other dogs at home, both male, a hound and a toy poodle. My GSD is VERY dominant with both of them and anytime we try to give attention to our hound or play with him she pretty much herds him back into his kennel area. Same with when we come home if they’re both outside as soon as he comes up to us, she immediately ushers him back into his kennel away from us and then comes to great us. It’s so unfair and makes me feel so bad for him because he just takes it. Mostly this “herding him back” consists of putting her paws on his back, mouthing his ears and neck (never really biting) and pretty much aggressively shoving him away from us. Have no idea what to do with this or where to even start. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Hello! I have a mix German shepherd, Belgian malinois, & husky. He's so great! My only struggle is when people come to visit me at my home and he won't stop jumping/peeing because he is so excited. How can I stop this. I usually have to put him back in his crate for him to calm down and then try again an hour later. Please I would like him to be a good dog when random people he doesn't know are in my house. He will be 1 years old in july.

My 1.5 year old Dutch Shepherd and Belgian Malanois mix was recently attacked by an off leash pitbull during a training walk. I am afraid of this scarring him and possibly making him dog aggressive (which he previously wasn't), are there any tips on what precautions to take when training him? I have him along with a Shiba Inu, I didnt see much change in their interactions but my Dutch seemed to get a bit more irritated then normal. To add onto the question is that I am from a rural area and am going to be moving to a bigger town soon (reason why I was train walking him), are there any tip and tricks to get him use to more stimulation then what he's use to? I have tried my best and took him to dog parks and walks around the small town streets, but is it enough? Another question is I recently invested pepper spray and a break stick in case of another dog attack, do you have any idea on what I could do to protect my dog better? I've read and watched some videos that say different things like grab the dogs legs and spin them, or lift them in the air till they let go, others said to pin them.

Wtf?... how so? Because he had the audacity to acknowledge that literally EVERY living thing will eventually die (including every person you’ve ever loved or ever will love)? I feel incredibly sorry for any living being in your life if you’ve made it to whatever age you are and you still don’t know about death... Like, holy shit, that’s actually mind blowing that someone who isn’t a toddler doesn’t know about death. Good lord, dude.

Kez Rashid it keeps the dog focused on you and your face rather than your hands. That way the dog is listening to you and learns that he gets treats from obeying you instead of just following your hands

These cheese sticks are very hard to break with the hands, because they are pretty elastic. Maybe he doesn't want mushed cheese all over his hands.

You can always cut their diet short a meal so they are hungry when you train them. Like skipping the evening meal and train the next morning. (only do that with healthy dogs though) Or only feed through training. Like no set meals out of a bowl, but every bit goes through your hand via training or during walks.
