In this video, I install the supply lines for plumbing, dryer vent, the rest of the windows, the other skylight, parge the one section of the back roof and seal it, bring up almost 100 sheets of drywall to the second story and other miscellaneous things

I can tell two types of plumbers when I see them using PEX or similar products. One is a newbie, the other is a well-experienced plumber who has not quite finished the transition from copper to PEX: they both try real hard to make everything level and plumb, and they install a ton of 90 degree elbow fittings to accomplish it. PEX is flexible for a reason - let it curve around corners, let it come in from one or two stud-bays over and curve up to a valve, or curve above a plate, drop in and put a copper rough-in for the angle stop after wallboard goes up. Leave out the elbows! Nothing takes more time, and has more potential for leaks. AND - each 90 slows the flow approximately the same as ten feet of tubing, or more with 1/2"
@robsterenborg

i totally agree with the flow but I can't see any tubs to fill so for showers and other use it will be fine

@@robsterenborg - totally understand, tubs, hose bibs, things like that really are the ones that show the flow. We don't always know how much of a delay there is in posting videos, so I sure don't know if any suggestions are literally too late to be helpful, but all those elbows do really slow the flow, they can be noisy (not always, of course, but often) and the time! Installing each and every one... sure is great watching Jesse work!

We have a camp in northern Vermont and it had galvanized pipe for the water system. I replaced it all with PEX several years ago because after many decades of service, the interior of the pipe was rotted out to the point of complete blockage. You'll be very happy with the brass nipple in your bathtub. Nice work on all of this, Jesse.

Jesse, Look forward to every time you drop a new video on the progress of your house, and look forward to watch how far you have come, and then look back to from where you started🙂 Great that when you designed this home, you made contingency for future add on and updates as well, down the road. Must be a great satisfaction to know all the plumbing and electrical skills and use all that training in building your own home, so you know where and how it was all put together, that in itself is something to be proud of, and have your son also interrested in doing what you so as well. already looking forward to the next video, and the sheet rock install and then the beautiful cabinets, like what you had in the old house. I also like the windows as you do, all the same height . I also do not like the LONG windows. Paul and I personally like more wall space. Like the idea of the wood looking tiles in the bathrooms, like you did in the old house as well. Hope you and your family have a blessed Easter.

The galvanized pipe definitely does close in and block up over time. It also is well known to rust through from the inside and spring a leak. That bring said, by the time there were any problems with that in your house, you'll likely be long dead! My house is 111 years old, and I've just taken the last of mine out, and although it had some bad sections, the majority of it was fine. I replaced everything with pex.

Great progress Jesse. Nice to see the inspections went well and the house is closed in from the weather now. The stainless steel rings you use on the plumbing shouldn't rust unless others have theirs cross-contaminated from mild steel or very low-quality stainless. The roof looks so different with the membrane coating and the shade is great. Keep up the great work 👏

Very wise decision to replace the galvanized water pipe in your own house. It eventually rusts on the inside, it does take many years, but it slowly closes up the inside bore reducing the flow and pin holes will become evident soon enough. Stainless steel pipe is way more expensive in the short term, but it's cheaper than a repair to a stud / sheetrock wall. I've heard of long term issues with brass if you happen to live in an area with high ph. water. Really enjoying this project BTW...

Those stainless rings are oetiker clamps and are much better than the copper crimp rings which are utter garbage. As of now, compressed air is no longer allowed to pressure test pex, water only. And for your own benefit, never put galvanized pipe in your domestic water system. Ever. Yes, it will corrode and block itself.

@douglasthompson2740

I would highly recommend insulating the dryer ducting run. It is very rarely done but you are asking for trouble as the hot wet air will condense (hot wet dryer air meets room temperature air or duct) both inside and outside of the bare duct. It will find a way out of the inside of course wherever an ongoing source of moisture gathers you are asking for trouble. Always a pain behind closed walls and generally not even noticed until the smell or water stains show up. I used an aluminum insulation (not the bubble style although that works as well) and zip tied it along the run. Once layer was a large improvement with two layers even better. I can tell you that a twelve foot run will make a prodigious amount of water where you don't want it from direct experience. If it is in a conditioned space it also helps reduce heat loss or cooling loss through the metal duct as an added bonus.

I had the privilege of working for a client that was an outdoor advertiser, and they had just gotten into concrete signs with styrofoam inserts, and on one of the jobs, the mud arrived hot, or quick set, but was inadvertently delayed. It was actually setting up as it was arriving. They worked feverishly at getting the mud out of the truck. A lot of it was just dumped on the ground, and later cleaned up. They wrote that one off for that customer, but were able to finish it for a display of work they could do. They made the customer a new sign with new forms, and that one was a success.

When you are ready to paint. Graco 390 PC airless sprayer. The Hi-boy. Comes with 50’ of fluid hose but you could use another 50’ to be practical and have less movement of the spray machine on the exterior ground or moving between rooms on the interior painting. Preparation is everything. A good job masking the windows & frames before spraying is a must. Outside use masking tape that won’t break down in ultraviolet and make it difficult to remove later. Exterior: You will appreciate the wheels when moving the sprayer around the outside of your house over any rough ground. I prefer high quality Acrylic Latex over Elastomeric for exterior walls such as stucco. Never-the-less, fill all cracks and any open joints. Use a good quality exterior grade latex primer. Use a .021 spray tip or larger. It will feel like fire-hosing, but you will be following up using a 25mm roller sleeve to push the primer into the stucco and working the coating out on the walls. Don’t just spray, roll it as well. Same technique with the chosen finish coat. Interior: Spray and back roll the latex primer (20mm sleeve) on the drywall. More efficient with one person spraying., and the other rolling. Tip to use is .015. You may want an extension wand (2-3ft) connected to the nozzle of the gun to reach the ceilings in high areas. Finish coat use 15mm sleeve on the roller for eggshell or semi-gloss paint. 20mm is fine for satin or flat latex. (DIY) Flushing out material (paint) at the end of the day will keep the fluid hose & machine working properly for years. And keep an eye on the machine filter, there can be garbage in a brand-new pail of paint from the manufacturer. Nothing is worse than a work stoppage due to a blocked tip at the gun. A reverse-a-tip is handy on any gun as well. On heavy materials using the big tip, I never used the filter, it clogs up and makes the pump work harder. On regular paint always use the filter if spraying, even pre-screen the paint before rolling the finish (though old pantyhose) when the paint has gone back and forth into the same can over two or three days use .

I have friends who had an all-in-one washer & dryer and they HATED it...took forever to run a load through-longer than if they has separate units. Also, brother-in-law who had a condensing dryer as he had no where to vent out a dryer, and he hated it, too. The chamber that collected the moisture was always icky with mildew, algae, or some such. As the laundry person at our house, I highly suggest separated, vented units ;)

Re your roof vent. i live in Wisconsin and after 4 - 5 days of very cold weather ( 10 - 20 below zero F) hoar frost built up and plugged a roof plumbing vent and when a sewage transfer pit in the basement kicked in it sucked water out of a toilet in order to get air and sewage gas got in the house. I painted the vent pipe black, and shortened it. The pipe was on the north roof and the winter sun didn't reach it very well. There is also a mechanical vent that can go into the transfer pit vent pipe near the pit that draws room air for the pit if the suction from transfer pit pump is a little high if the vent stack was frosted shut. Otherwise it is closed and there is no path for sewer gas. This is a mechanical device and was against code back in 1990s but I installed it as a home owner. I've not had a problem since but extended super cold weather for several days is not common and I did several things at once. Your house is very interesting construction wise and good luck.

Piping (plumbing) styles vary around places. Here in northern europe we like to insulate all our internal pipes -- hot water stays hot, and adjacent cold water does not get hot... Also we make sure the freezing weather won't get to our pipes. Tearing walls open to find busted pipes... so messy. We also fill all inner wall cavities with insulation material. Not for thermal insulation, but for acoustics silencing. .. but when you bury cables to insulation, you need to derate the amperage capacity due to lack of cooling.

May I recommend when applying a membrane coating, you get a wet Mil gauge from the paint store. The mfg spec's indicate 20 mils per coat and you will get 200 -250 feet per gallon. You don't spread out this type of product like a normal paint. Apply a heavy coat (1 pass) and check the mils with the gauge. You will quickly learn how much paint per roller pass 20 mils is. It's important to get the right amount of coating down to minimize failure while note wasting time or product. Note: The thicker or heavier and application as per the manufacture, the better the appearance, and performance. Its. important to maintain a wet edge to allow the coating to bond and remain somewhat seamless. This may require two people to apply. Also, try using a 5 gallon bucket with 2 gallons of coating and a roller grid to load up the roller quicker. Working on the steeper roof maybe a Challege. Spraying may be a better option and have someone back roll it, ifs its not to windy. The membrane coatings I often spec, are applied at a rate of 60 - 100 mils per pass. And as you indicated temperature and humidity are equally important. Good luck
@jmuller86
@jmuller86 Жыл бұрын
yea I guess I should have tested it with a mil gauge on that flatter part of the roof. Will be harder on the 7/12 pitch parts now. But honestly this roof is waterproof with just the valleys and ridges being sealed. The only other place it leaked was that shed dormer where the honeycombing was. Not to say that it couldnt be leaking in very small amounts somewhere else, but that was without any waterproofing at all. I was basically putting it on as heavy as I could without the roller skipping. It wasnt a cheap roller either, it has bearings. So when it skips that means the paint is thick enough for it to glide instead of roll. My way of thinking is that if I do 2 coats at even the thinnest possible, then a third coat should be 40 mils, and I definitely didnt do it the thinnest possible. I do appreciate the info. If I wasnt in such a rush, I would have done a little experiment with the gauge and showed people the proper way. Have you heard of this product before? seems to work very well, almost too good to be true. I guess we will see when I hang some wall tiles from it in the bathroom

big industry in thermal hanging curtains, hung from a rod, that really increase r-value in front of windows, inside. Also outside windows, covering on east and SE side of windows in summer time. Covering outside is the key to stop sun from heating up inside. Soon summer temps will be going up around 10 degrees depending on where you are, as planet heats up. I have spoken, that is all.

My bathroom washer and dryer are for day wear clothes, and underwear. I strip down to wash and bath and have the wash running with my take off clothes. The basement washer and dryer is for heavy items and garage use stuff. A separate washer is for grease and oil clothes

The Rockwool should only by rated to 1200F ( you said 2500) either way it's an excellent choice. It won't mold even if it gets wet and has a better friction fit, and less sag that fiberglass. Amazing progress on the house, you have planned everything out well in advance. The color of the roof looks good from the drone shots. 👍

If you put wires inch-and-a-half deep and then you put couple dabs a phone where the plastic membranes are you don't have to use any nail strips at all, unless it's in the kitchen behind cabinet sometimes people use longer screws over there or bathroom vanities.

Cloride rich environments can cause "stainless" to corrode. So unless you're in a cloride rich environment, you probably don't need to worry about it. (An indoor pool area and stuff can have both the moist and cloride rich environment required to corrode them)
