I am new to surf fishing in general (although a life long fisherman mostly freshwater everywhere from my home state of Florida to Alaska). After catching a nearly 6-foot pregnant Blacktip Shark on a cheaper $70 spinning combo on 30-pound mono back in May I fell in love with the thrill and I am now hooked (pun intended) so upon your suggestion, I purchased the Penn Spinfisher VI 10500 and not being able to get the Ugly Stick Bigwater I chose a 12 foot Offshore Angler Breakwater Surf Spinning Rod. I plan on spooling it with an 85 or 100-pound braid. Thanks again for the guidance, now I feel confident that my Surf Shark Fishing Set-up will be capable of handling even larger sharks here Northeast Florida (Atlantic).

Nice setup, but you should have put the braid on first and the mono second due to the monofilament's abrasion resistance.

Yeah idk why anyone would use that much for backing. That's even a lot of mono for a topshot. Normally mono backing would be just enough to cover the spool so that the braid has something to hold onto and not slip.

For years I've used a strip of duct tape( gorilla tape) on the spool so the braid has something to bite and once you have the wrap or two a couple small patches of it over that and just fill it with braid. Never slips, never causes corrosion and you will much braid on. Shops will use a heavy wax to do the same thing.

I’ve gone from 15 to 12 and now 10’ on my pole because I like to cast big baits sometimes. The best thing for my shark fishing has been the bait cannon I built though! I freeze a 1-1/2” x 8” bullet of pigs blood, shoot it out, then follow up with a large mullet or ray bullet and I’ve never been happier. I actually gave up the kayak because it shoots close to 300 yards and it never fails! Let me know if you want some plans and I’ll hook ya up

Nice. I'm in Hawaii & ordered a new Fenwick Seahawk Surf Rod for spinners from WA. 16.5ft. For a Stingray i just left the butt plug in a fixed position & used my tips of my toes to steady it. Horsed in a +30lb Ray. This type of rod is popular for Europeans carpers. I put a Shimano Ultegra 14000 on it same as the carpers use. Length does matter when casting but a shorter rod can pump a big fish in easier. I like 12ft with a SS butt cap, or a 13'3" casting rod. There are strong 12ft surf casting rods out there like the Mojo Surf heavy. Also Blackhole has some impressive 12ft casters that are on KZfaq for casting +700ft. I like the energy you put into your video. Great job.

Shimano's Ultegra spinners uses a line layering oscillation system that compacts the line lay on the spool. This means you can cast far. I use the Ultegra 5500 for Trevally & Bonefish, the 10K for Trevally & Rays, and the monster 14K for really big boys. On the 14K i have braid backing for high line capacity & 100m of mono 50lb topshot since i slide cast using this (also in coral areas it's better to use as braid would snap instantly if cut under pressure). I got my Matt Black 14K from Europe over a year ago where it's popular for large carp because it's a distance casting spinner. Now it's available in the States. 44lb max drag.

Maybe you can answer my question I have several rigs just like you built. I have braid on first as my backing with mono on last . Can you explain line use or why even have a different backing . A corpus Christi shop lined mine and the only explanation I got was thats the way it's done .. But why is it done that way
@Bsprecksfishing
@Bsprecksfishing 5 жыл бұрын
I used the mono backing simply to fill up the spool halfway because I had a limited amount of braid. I wanted my mainline to be braid because I can cast that further and that wont be dragged by the surf as easy. I would put a 15 foot mono leader attached to 3 feet of wire leader before the hook.

Quick question; what other purpose does the backing mono line serve other than to give the braided line more grip? Your reel already has a rubber tube at the centre that can give the braided line more grip. Also, why spool the mono backing halfway through the reel instead of just enough to cover the whole reel spool and back the braided line that way?
@Bsprecksfishing
@Bsprecksfishing 5 жыл бұрын
Like I said in the video, I only had 300 yards of braid, when the spool would hold 1000 yards of it. I used the backing to fill it up before I put the braid on.

I would of went braid backing( reel is braid compatible )... so the mono gets used more and you can just replace the mono, much cheaper then replacing powerpro. also mono has the stretch needed on the big fish ( less leader needed then ). Then some 100+lb leader, 200+lb wire trace to a circle hook.
@Bsprecksfishing
@Bsprecksfishing 6 жыл бұрын
If i was using a conventional reel I would do that. However, I intend to use the rod to cast the bait out, and using mono as the main line would drastically reduce my casting distance.

I use the 10500svv as well, and it is loaded with braid backing (for line capacity) and a 100yd mono topshot since I fish very rocky beaches and need the abbrasion resistance. Just a tip: powerpro is expensive, have a look at kastking braid (it's an american based company, but have a production line in china). They make excellent 8strand braid which has landed many, many sharks, including some big hammers. Give it a try, it's sold at a fraction of the cost of powerpro and shipping is often free.
@AndyEmerson8
@AndyEmerson8 6 жыл бұрын
Thomas S thanks a lot. I have the 6500 and put on 300 yards or so of 50 lb power pro braid and recently lost a big chunk of line. Maybe 100 yards. I was wondering if I can just tie on more braid or what the suggestion would be to bring my line back up to capacity without replacing all the line.
@thomass8118
@thomass8118 6 жыл бұрын
If you know how to properly tie braid to braid, it's a chance you could take, BUT, a knot will (almost) always be a weak link in your 'chain'. I landed a 9ft tiger on spinning gear which had two pieces of braid tied together, the knot was off the spool most of the fight and all went well. Have a look at the line I mentioned before, compare it's price to powerpro and see what looks best to you ;). Fishing if often about 'trusting' your gear.

Lucien Bonvouloir if you want protection from long runs, especially since he is land-based on the beach, spool it with straight braid. He could get even more capacity by running 50 lb. braid rather than 65lb. He will never get close to that drag setting anyway, not standing up, especially with 15’ rod leverage working against him. What are the pro's and con's of even having mono backing. I would think its cheaper to use mono, but you also can't have as much line on. Also spools often are limited in yardage, but at a tackle store, they often have massive rolls of line. i understand mono has stretch as well, but the 300 yards of braid would eliminate this for the most part. And that's the purpose of the mono leader on a sharking rig. At this point, I'm just spilling out thoughts, and I'd like to hear yours.
@Bsprecksfishing

I mainly just used mono backing so I'd only have to buy 300 yards of braid, instead of filling the whole spool with 700 yards of braid

Great video, the Australians have figured out how to get your bait far out. The Australians, use a technique called slide lining. They launch out a heavy sinker, then they use a slide line jig with heavy mono or wire to to the bait then they slide the jig down towards the casted out weight. U can see the technique on KZfaq.

Why didn't you just fill the whole spool with braid? I use the same reel, but have approx 250yds of braid backing (65lbs) and a 150yd of 70lbs topshot. Casting is still quite good and I don't need to worry about abbrasion as much as I would with braid. I don't now if you have used it yet, but I fear the 50lbs won't hold up if you get a bigger shark. BTW, over here in Europe you can get even longer rods (Shimano, SPRO, Shakespeare produce them), up to 5 meters (16ft). But if you do not need the distance, they are useless. I use a 13 and 14ft rods and they do the job nicely.

The only issue with using a 15’ rod is that the shark has A LOT of leverage, if you’re surf casting, obviously the longer length helps with casting distance, however with a little practice, a 12’ rod will serve you well and your back will thank you for it
@Bsprecksfishing
@Bsprecksfishing 6 жыл бұрын
That is true, but that means I have a lot of leverage over it as well, and if I lean back and use my weight it works in my favor. But yes that's rough on the back
@kevinhouchins3641
@kevinhouchins3641 6 жыл бұрын
That’s not quite the way physics works. The sharks has all the leverage, your upper hand is acting as the fulcrum point and the butt of your rod is your “tug” end. You basically have around 3’ of the rod and the shark has the rest. Have you caught anything on the outfit yet? I had that rod and returned it after catching a decent size blacktip. I tried it because of the extra casting distance that I thought I would get but truthfully the difference between it and a 12’ is negligible. The amount of strain that the longer rod caused was ridiculous, if I was new to shark fishing and this was the first rod that I had used, it would have turned my against shark fishing
@Bsprecksfishing
@Bsprecksfishing 6 жыл бұрын
Kevin Houchins yeah I guess you right about the leverage, but leaning back and using gravity on my side always works. I have caught a few sharks but no not from this 15 foot... on Long Island all we get from the surf are 200lb sand tigers and 80lb browns, both of which take relatively little muscle to defeat. I wouldn’t go after hammerheads in Florida with this spinning setup lol.. Where do you live/fish
