WHY should you use a RIDICULOUSLY Long Fishing Rod?

This fishing rod is ridiculously long. The reason we chose to use this long fishing rod is because we are going for distance. This fishing rod gives us a big casting advantage. We are able to sling heavy weights much further than my 9’ Mojo surf. This rod is 15’ to be exact, but it can handle some of the monster fish that are lurking out there.

The advantage they bring to you is distance to get out where other rods can't reach breaking fish ( beach fishing ). You should practice throwing like on the beach or a field , that's what I did before I took it out for the first time and when I took it to Assateague and casted the weight ( I was using 17 lb mono ) it went 120 feet, so using braid you might throw a little further, I've caught bluefish on it back in the 70's they were 12 pounds and up a good fight and a hell of a work out for me but I got them in. I brought it with me every time I went fishing just in case they were breaking, try using a lure ( top water or heavy metal ) you'll have a lot of fun or just use cut bait. Larry

Good vid. I've surfed fished most of my life and I have one suggestion to improve your casting distance with a 15ft pole. Practice driving into your throw with our hips. It will give you little extra power. Also practice the release of the line during the throw. Makes a big difference when you're throwing for distance vs accuracy. Cheers

15 ft rod works well if you have more open space, that way you can cast even further with the correct technique. Try pairing it up with a surfcasting reel, helps you gain more distance

Every one in the UK uses 12ft + rods for beach fishing, but now we have started using 14ft +rods what we call continental rods it's all about easy casting and finesse bait presentation, the rod you are using looks like a budget rod when you use a decent one they are a absolute pleasure to use.

If I may give you a tip for casting with a surfcasting rod: In order to cast farther, cast with the reel pointed up and not down. Besides this, a reel with a bigger spool capacity will produce less resistance when unwinding. Great vid though! Love watching you and Erin. Keep it up! Love from a fanatic beach fisherman in The Netherlands.

Great vid...there are big 2 advantages when using a big no. 1. Like you said casting mainly used for surf areas to get over the bars no.2 its when u targeting bigger fish while smaller rods are fun and u feel the fish more its because your smaller rod is potentially reaching maximum flex which in turn allows the fish to put more force on the line pulling more drag than it should its like applying direct pressure to the fish which inturn allows alot more hook pulls while bigger rods are designed to take that amount of force and turn it against the fish because the maximum flex is alot harder to reach allowing the rod to bend less/not to over exert to much pressure on the fish thus making the fish become exhausted alot quicker think of it like fighting against a spring thus reducing hook pulls.

Hey Brendon, Owen here from Senko Skipper Fishing Community. I have a really good bait-saving tip. Instead of bunching worms on a hook, thread the worm onto the hook like a sock on a foot or a senko on a jig. That way, you really save on bait. Also, it stays on the hook WAY better and can be reused after 5 or 6 fish.

These are the kind of rods we use in Spain for surf fishing, I have a 5.20 meters and yes, they basically are to get more distance in casting. I guess as we don't have that amount of fish (the population of fish has been decreasing exponentially in Spain for the last 15 years) close to the surf we need to cast the bait way out there. Thanks for your videos

here in my country, we only use those kind of ginormous rods for surf fishing (surfcasting as we call it here). the ocean here is tough, and that lenght helps keeping the line above the waves so the water doesn't pick the line as much. we also use heavier sinkers (up to 150g or more) and those big rods are better to lauch those sinkers farther away! :)

where I live we tend to use 13-16ft rods for beach fishing all the time. The reason is that our fish tend to stay further away from the shoreline and its purely to get distance. You mostly just get small flatfish and roundfish here but if you'd use a smaller fishing rod you wouldn't catch them cause you can't get the distance :).

Yes small rods can be fun with a monster on. Except the time I hooked a 40+ lb black drum on 6 foot ugly stick with 12lb test off the Chesapeak Bay Bridge pier. The drum just keep running out and after about 2-3 mins I ran out of line and he snapped me off (halfway to Virginia Beach). Talk about feeling helpless...

Had two of them in my life time , they cast far, wait till you get a rock that's 20 lbs or better that rod will double and you won't be reeling in as fast as you were on that day you've got to play a fish that size or break your rod. I sold both of mine and went back to my 12' ocean master that I use on occasion , I mostly use the 10' & 9 ' ers. Larry

Yep, it's a surf rod. At least, that's what we call them here in Australia. Many years ago, we used to fish for Garfish with a 20 foot bamboo pole. Gar as in sea gar. The smallish ones with the beak. We'd fish with a float at night along a rock wall. As soon as the float dipped, we'd pull back hard and bring them to shore the same way as professional Tuna fisherman flip fish onto the boat.

I have 2 of these rods. Great for surf and jerry's. Keeps the line above the rocks and waves

I used to have a 13-6 glass rod like that was too soft. I went to a 11-6 carbon rod with more backbone. I can toss 6 oz 100+ yards.

Nice that is a good bit of advice. This one was pretty floppy

Take it out and try different sinkers to find the optimal casting weight for the rod. Try clipped down pulley with circle hooks. Extra distance, self hooking and the sinker is kept up away from snags by the weight of the fish. Works well here in NZ for most species.

Cool video! I'd have to ditch the bell and go with a baitrunner. I like to pretend I'm Cptn Quint trying to land Jaws haha.

Taylor franklin You use the bigger rod to launch the bait past the breakers, also it helps to keep the line clear of the water when theres tons of kelp adrift. Keeping that line above the first breaker can be the key to not catch kelp all day/night

Yep long Surf casting rods are made for distance and height for casting over beach front waves, but you can use them how you want also cliff and rock to keep away from rock face when retrieving , Great videos subscribed!

I got that same rod but mines all black really I like yours with the red. Your right throws far and you can't tell there's a fish there till I've a few pounds. Lol. And I wish I could find me a few more bait runners but just can't afford them right now. It's summer all my extra money needs to help my kids non profit fishing group so I have enough stuff to give away this summer. Got plenty rod and reels but tackle I still have to find. But the bait you got seems to work great. One day I may try some. Thanks for sharing and god bless

Fun vid. 15 foot was my small surf rod. Broke the 20 footer on a HUGE Bat Ray. I mistimed the wave while trying to land it and it went out with the wave faster than I could adjust. I had this rod for over 35 years. Sniff sniff. Poop happens. Tight Lines Youngens.

I like 10 to 13Ft rods for fishing salt water from shore. I prefer conventional reels but i also like open face reels for mackerel but usually my friends use my open face gear more than i do. I find sometimes throwing a 4oz cod jig with a few mackerel flies gets me into the fish when they are far out and no one is having luck

Enjoyed seeing your family outing. Check out U.K beach fishing, we all use long rods for maximum distance, we commonly fish baits at 150m. The continental (European) style rods have got even longer , some 17ft, but remain sensitive to small bites. Good luck to you and your kin.
This is WHY YOU NEED a RIDICOUSLY LONG SURF FISHING ROD!
