My dad, brother, and I recently got into the hobby that is model railroading. It’s awesome. We don’t really care if our engines have sound or smoke or anything, we just like the fun of it. We have N-scale, and our trains consist of a diesel train running a passenger train, courtesy of the Silver Streak Zephyr, and a steam freight train, courtesy of the Union Pacific Big Boy (which I got for my birthday) and 4 freight cars including a caboose that I recently purchased. Our strategy is to have 4 types of engines pulling 4 types of trains. My brother is covering the passenger trains, and I’m doing freight. We need now a steam locomotive to pull passengers and a diesel locomotive to pull freight. We’re really happy with what we have right now.

Nice Video clip! Apologies for the intrusion, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you researched - Januke Henatalie Formula (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? Have you heard people talk about - Piyaliyah Uncommunicative Preference - (do a search on google ) ? If you have the room, time and money to do a railroad, the experience is like nothing else. The people we met while researching and buying our equipment and supplies were a unique bunch. Artists all and passionate especially for their own work. From the guy who scratch built everything except the locos to the guy who made a hump yard so complex, he didn't have room for scenery. The challenges of any layout you decide on can keep you engaged (and possibly broke) for years. The world is yours to create or replicate and I'll guess you'll want to do both at some time in the hobby.

What I agree with and what I disagree with. Agree: The scenery advice is good. I'm gonna try this technique for my grass and mountains. For those of you wondering, use foam as depicted here. Bare wood will make too much noise. Disagree: Don't use bare Bachmann EZ-track. If you use it at all (it is easier than cork) add ballast. The same is true for Atlas True-Track, Kato Unitrack, and Life-Like Power-Loc Track. Additionally, make the most out of your space. Don't waste so much space. Finally, make a track plan that has turnouts, letting people get to the world outside your table. Don't lock it in. Obviously, you wouldn't run the trains off the edge, bit simply having the track improves the look. Oh, add a yard and siding too. All in all, great video, great tips. Follow them, but don't rely on them. *Note: I can't say an opinion on the bench work as I have not used this plan for my own layout.

Pro tip: the best possible adhesive (and cheapest) for the poly styrene insulation boards is acrylic latex paint. Home box stores often have a return or damaged section for next to no cost. The paint only needs to be applied to one side and is a better bond than the best adhesives in the store. Good luck!

Every summer I would get to stay with my Papa and Nana Goodrich in Hollister, California for two weeks! And when I was a teenager I stayed for two years! The steam train would roll by their house every day. I’d be on the Victorian house and wave at the conductor and engineer and they’d wave back. I miss those lazy summer days, I’ve loved trains ever since.

I just built the table for my first train platform. I fastened the two leg assemblies 64" apart. The length of the angle braces (1/4 x 1-1/4 molding) is described as 48" long in the video, but I had to make the length of the angle braces about 70" to fit properly between the leg assemblies. Thanks for a great plan.

that turorial was well done and very instructional. Makes me want to build another 4x8 sheet, but this time using the smaller grade below HO. I just thing you can put a lot more detail and track with a smaller scale train. I like the ease of working with the raises tracks, but I set up my tracks on the flat sections of track and simply nailed them down with very small crushed gravel supporting the trackway. On my set up I also utilized 8 switch tracks and about a total of eight track kill switches in order to stop the train at a dead end. I also built a nice trestled bridge about 20 " long, modeling the bridge after a real wooden trestle I saw in a photo, I weathered it as well. One of my trains entered and excited a mountain tunnel in a corner of the track, the tunnel took up the whole back of the board with a mountain built around it. My last feature was a small pond under the trestle next to it a workers hut with a small boat dock from it to into the water. I had a row boat tied up to the dock. It took me a long time to build the set and I got a kick out of weathering the engines and boxcars behind it. I'm fascinating by roundhouses so the next set up I built I want to include a working round house, working streetlights and functional crossings look cool as well. Nice job on this and nice job narrating Mr. Gross.

When I was a kid I had an HO scale train track I loved. As an adult I have no room for a lay out in my small home. So I'm taking a two by four that maxes out at 72 inches and making a diorama. I've already purchased a used ho scale steam engine ( Big B&O engine, all black ) and pulled the decals off it. I can't decide what coaches to put behind it, I'm going for an aesthetic not from any time period or even a historically accurate one.

How did they get the dad from “family ties” to do this? Way cool! Adds even more nostalgia to this!

I would've never guessed this guy was a rail roader. Just a side note. I bought a Bauchman steam locomotive train set. 9 cars and engine. It comes with the EZ Snap track. My engine kept derailing. The plow on the front of the locomotive was so low it kept catching the track where 2 pieces connected. I got rid of the E Z Track and just started using Atlas track. Problem solved.

They now make lock washers for carriage bolts that have claws on them that are pushed into the wood or other material to lock the head of the carriage bolt in place. Also, for the landscape, you can use broken drop-ceiling tiles to make quick cliffs.

I would had liked to place the tracks in different heights.... Like running the track over a hill, bridge or something like that

If you want to transport a layout like this, wouldn't it make more sense to have the legs be folding and locking? Any modifications you might want to make to this layout would be a real pain in the butt though

My brother is crazy over train CRASHES so how do you save a layout from some one that runs down at you with a living bat and smacks every single thing he sees?

Well, you’ll have to have a serious conversation with him. Tell him this hobby is very special to you and it’s very expensive, and that he can’t crash. Letting him use it properly will make a branch of trust and he will learn to not be destructive.

I am enjoying the instructional video, however, the ad breaks are too frequent and rather distracting. I had to go back a few times because of a couple of seconds of lost video/audio after the breaks.
