Building With Josh

This is a detailed instructional time lapse of our converted attic space.
This was a fun project to do but it took months in my spare time as I know many of you are familiar with. I am sure you know all about working and fitting in your projects when you can.
Please leave any comments below and I will do my best to answer any questions.
Again, there are many ways of doing things, this is just my process.
Thanks for watching and subscribing,

Wow! I have to say that this is one of the prettiest attic space conversions I have ever seen. I love the dark wood color choice of your ceiling in contrast to the white shiplap walls. Your wrought iron wall lamps look rustic but classy. The grey carpeting was a great choice to make it a cozy, warm space. I absolutely love everything about the look but your wonderful custom made shelving and closet doors are impressive. Way to go! I KNOW you and your family are enjoying this beautiful new space!

Currently working on transforming our space with built in’s as well. This is stunning and helps me to complete our project. One question, what led lights did you use? Did you use closed cell or open cell? I haven’t been able to find lights that can go near open cell, may have to use track lighting
@buildingwithjosh
@buildingwithjosh Жыл бұрын
Thank you for you feedback! The spray insulation we used was closed cell. I used the slim led cut in disc lights. These lights gave me peace of mind because of the depth needed and keeps the heat down in the ceiling. I am not knowledgeable about open cell foam.

Wow man, you guys rocked it out. Amazing. I'm having a garage and bonus room built and am deciding whether i want to finish the upstairs myself so i fan get more creative vs a drywall finish with the high cost to match. Whereas if we look at shiplap and tongue and groove we can have a unique look and save some money all while possibly getting a much more customized space. Watching this made me realize just how much time it would take however. What do you guess you have into that room timewise for the work you cover in the yhe video? Again excellent job.
@buildingwithjosh
@buildingwithjosh 9 ай бұрын
Well thank you! Yes, you can definitely get more unique and custom if you choose to do it! I worked on evenings and weekends on this project, but I would have to say it took 3-4 weeks of time. The barn wood ceiling took the longest because I had to prep the wood, probably took a week . I have a video on that also if you look it up. Goodluck with your project!

I absolutely loved this attic renovation. I was wondering if you had a problem with heat up there? What kind of insulation did you use?
@buildingwithjosh
@buildingwithjosh 6 ай бұрын
Thank you!! Due to the design, spray foam as used. Heat runs and return air were ran off the existing furnace. The room can be a little colder than other parts of the house, the thermostat is a distance away. I might add a baseboard electric heat to help keep it regulated better one day.

It came out beautiful. What woods (I see two) and finish did you use for the shelves? Thanks!
@buildingwithjosh
@buildingwithjosh 9 ай бұрын
Thank you! I used pine for the shelving. The barn wood ceiling is a combination of pine and doug fir. My finish is a 50:50 mix of early American and dark walnut oil minwax stain. I used a polyurethane as clear top coat.

I'm going to be doing an attic finishing and was wondering with batt insulation should I put up an additional vapor barrier
@buildingwithjosh
@buildingwithjosh Жыл бұрын
Is there a vapor barrier on the outside? Rule of thumb is usually only barrier on one side that way the walls or roof can breath some. If vapor barrier is on both sides, moisture can get trapped and mold the framing over time.
@user-lx7qx8cu1r
@user-lx7qx8cu1r 7 ай бұрын
Curious about the spray foam insulation you used! Did you add this before running electrical? Do you recommend doing one or the other first? And did you contract this work out?
@buildingwithjosh
@buildingwithjosh 7 ай бұрын
I definitely recommend spray foam before running electrical. It can be somewhat a pain to remove the foam in spots to run electrical. However if one runs electrical first, than the spray foam will make it near impossible for any future repairs, remodeling, or adding to it later! I did my own electrical, I’ve been around all the trades to know how to do most of them. I would always recommend reaching out to a local professional if unsure about electrical!

Beautiful job! My attic is somewhat similar, still mostly unfinished, so this is inspiring. Do you find having ceiling lights just down the middle enough to give decent lighting, or are the side lights needed as well (or just decorative)?
@buildingwithjosh

Thank you! I think the ceiling lights are sufficient for lighting, especially since they are led. I did the wall lights for dim mood lighting and decorative, love them and would do it the same way!

I'm making part of my attic into a walk in closet..what did you do for insulation..I want to heat it...I am thinking using 2x6 instead of 2x4 for studs for thicker insulation..but thanks for the interior ideas..you must be in a warmer climate.
@buildingwithjosh
@buildingwithjosh 9 ай бұрын
2x6 walls can get you up to R21, which is what code is now for exterior walls. I live in Colorado, a combination of hot and cold climate. I had the exterior envelope spray foamed, 2.5” on walls and 4” on ceiling. And after finishing the interior walls I added r13 batts and blow in under the floor. Good luck on your project. I bet it will look great.
@murph3194
@murph3194 6 ай бұрын
Structural question: How do you identify if the joists are strong enough? Many roof systems are just 2x4s for the ceiling underneath/new floor. Did you sister 2x6s or 2x8s onto the 2x4s and sit them on the outside wall plates?
@buildingwithjosh
@buildingwithjosh 6 ай бұрын
These trusses were engineered with this space in mind when installed. The trusses have 2x6 top and bottom cord and webbing needed for structural support of the floor. If one is converting an existing attic, a beefier floor would be needed. I would recommend discussing with a local engineer or architect to discuss your project. The floor joists would depend on the span of the room. A drop or flush beam can always be added if needed!

@buildingwithjosh

Do you mean a drop beam under the trusses to support the middle of the floor? My trusses were designed with the floor in the design, no need for underneath support.
