Bigger roads don't fix traffic problems like more connections-especially transit connections! But can we put them in without bulldozing something we love? Find out as I work to improve transit, road, and bicycle connections in Port Concord with a new train station, new cargo train terminal, expanded tram/streetcar service, and more bicycle infrastructure.
This is a Cities Skylines series bringing together multiple creators to build on a single map in an attempt to build one city together. #5B1C #5Builders1City #CitiesSkylines

I wish you builders didn't feel the need to apologize for playing this series for us to enjoy! Part of the fun for me is seeing all the different (or identical!) approaches to problems, seeing you all sync (or desync!) as you may, and always overcoming (or flailing madly!). Thank you for all the efforts you all make, it's great fun to watch and I hope you all have nothing but success and joy!

Yeah. I like to think of it like real life where different elected officials move through leading the city throughout history. And even though politician X had some grand plan for some area it doesn’t mean politician Y will see the same thing. “Cargo port” is a perfect example of this. Love it. Keep up the great work!

Changing each others developments for new developments is one of the most interesting of the 5b1c. I mean nothings forever, as you would see changes and redevelopments, especially in city centers and urban areas, so it's very normal and realistic to me. Love your work.

@Entolom
@Entolom 2 жыл бұрын
I partially agree. I would like to see and appreciate the original development first, before we re-zone it three episodes later. It's why I liked the last season better. Let the builders have a section to themself, then let them have that same section and another untouched section to work on for the next round. In the third round and any rounds beyond, let them work on the whole map. At least then different areas of the city can develop its own feel before a new mayor puts a housing tract in what was made a protected viewshed a couple videos prior.

I think you have to remember sometimes that as viewers we probably watched one B talk about whatever they are doing in their episode then when in the next episode another B totally changes it, that B hasn't seen the previous episode at that time because we and KZfaq demand new episodes every couple of days. So it can be frustrating or amusing to watch sometimes. I love watching the 5 B's different approaches and also how their styles are influenced by each other. In season 1 it did feel a little disconnected at first but worked out better as the season went on. At the start of this season it felt a little like 5 builders one intersection, but as it's progressed I think it's working even betterl. Great work from all of the B's and it's much appreciated. In season one Phil taught the builders about pipes under the road, I feel in season 2 it's Lee teaching realistic grades and road structure 😃👍

This is exactly why this series works so well. It's just like in real world, one person might have a good idea but they might need another person to make it work in the real world. In this series we see people creating new things and people fixing problems caused by other people's builds. This also seems to show your and CPP's strengths really well. Together you are all making this city feel much more real than any of your individual builds do.

My favorite thing about your style is when you take about 10 minutes to recap and review what's going on in the city and what needs fixing. Sure, you may have a neighborhood complain about changes, but when those changes positively effect a much larger community that's what ultimately matters. I've said it before but I really enjoy your music choices and style of editing. You keep the videos on point and moving beautifully with well placed time lapses. You make an 80 minute video seem like it flew by and keep us wanting more. On a side note, I really hope everything worked out with your family member and wish them a speedy recovery. I love Biffa's work, except his management of universities, it's dreadful. It's almost like he forgets how they work every single city build. He never leaves enough space, and I think you can tell they are a significantly lower priority to him than most other parts of the game. That, though even campus faculty buildings have such a big impact on the city, and in real life are a huge money maker. I sat on a board of a multi-campus university. It started off when the national government converted old trade schools into single universities. Around the country, each state capital had one of these universities - and every one of them has spent all of their time since trying to consolidate down to a single campus within the city. If you're going for a realistic build, consider that they are deeply problematic - they create more problems than they solve, and they are really expensive to run.

@@stevespain6445 i think that's a problem for him outside of universities as well. Watching him add an industry to a tiny area only to watch him struggle to fit in additional buildings is frustrating. It's like that across most of his New Tealand series.

@Pascal Djiknavorian Hey, thanks for the considered response. For me, personally, when I build, I like to use mods to get as realistic as I can. For me, when I'm watching - I enjoy all sorts of differing content - I like Overcharged Egg's focus on aesthetics over function, even though I generally avoid that. I loved Czardus' historical build from quite a long time ago. Biffa has such a great presenting style, I really enjoy his work, even when I take issue with a particular bit. Having spent over a decade working/directing a university, I have traveled through a couple of countries' universities (probably between 40-50), I appreciate the diversity. I hope understandably, what gets under my skin a bit, is when their importance is just ignored, or clearly put to the bottom of the list. [edit: generally by the time one of my my cities is getting to 100k I've got two different universities running in my cities.]

@@F0rever1ad I hear you there :) I also taught performing arts, and the amount of times I'm talking to my screen "You need to put more planning into your presentation and series in general..." is strong on youtube lol People want to make a business out of it, but fall short on basics (like how to effectively use pitch, pace, and pause). Which is fine, until its not. There's a reason professional performers/directors/etc can take months to put together only a few hours of content. I don't expect YT casters to go to that level of professionalism, much less seems to be easily tolerable to audiences. However, I always think there are some negative feedback loops in learning how to youtube from youtubers (as opposed to those who have spent years studying performance), casters should be aware of. One of the first being, plan, plan, plan.

Loved the episode, and while Robert Moses did build freeways through parks ie: parkways but a majority of his highways/parkways were built in/through predominantly Black and minority neighborhoods. His worst creation was the Cross Bronx Expressway, while the connection was needed, a better route could’ve been taken but he didn’t care for it and completely destroyed beautiful neighborhoods in The Bronx and split it right in two.

@@LeeHawkinsPhoto the way i understand it the banning feature isnt an actual ban, it simply adds a "cost" to the path finding (like a reduction in speed limit would) for that vehicle type. the more segments you implement the ban on, the higher the cost, so for short paths of a single segment the ban may be ineffective but for longer ones it is more effective. what you did in this video therefore should be quite effective since the ban was applied to like 6 or 7 segments on that path.

Loving the Orange Blossom Special in the background! One of the neat things about the multiplayer is that is almost adds a political element as different builders have to be aware of and prepared for flack about changing another builders stuff from their "party" - they have to be able to justify it and while you won't ever get everyone on board you do have to take it into consideration and it does seem to have an effect on the decisions being made - it is very interesting In regards to the parks for highways - there is a large park in Omaha that was saved from being split by a highway because when the land was donated as park land (this would have been back in the 1860s or 1870s) the developer stipulated that the city could not change any of the lands usage or it would revert back to his current living descendants. Of course the developers wasn't concerned about cars and highways but rather the city was basically controlled by organized crime bosses who had no problem parceling out park land for development.

The thing with the unrealistic clearance measurements in the game is that it'S actually measuring from the ground surface to the "upper" surface of the road. That means that the actual space between the roads is actually less by the 2 or 3 m concrete structure that forms most of the "thickness" of the higher road. And so the vanilla 8 or 10 m height would actually leave a 6-7 m clearance which would feel reasonable to a degree.

Hey LEEeeeEeee (your intros always crack me up) I've got a single criticism: When you start working to reconnect roads, could you take a minute to (re)explain why you add roads, insert a T-junction crossroad, delete most of it, then start again? Are you working on finding angles? Is their some silent calculus being done? Specific curve goals?

A lot of times I am trying to find angles and see what my options are for curves. I use the T junctions to just cut the road and put a node where I want...but I demo it all when it just doesn’t come out exactly the way I want. In this one I was trying to create a compound curve...but ended up scrapping the idea because the geometry was just not working out.

Hey Lee, just wanted to Clarify the Henry Hudson Parkway bit. The rail line wasnt abandoned in Moses time it was part of the New York Central’s West Side Line which ran alongside Riverside Park. In the 1920s, the West Side Improvement Project consisted of the creation of the parkway but also the expansion of Riverside Park. It was done by landfill and essentially building a deck over the railway tracks which were still in use until the 1980s when it was abandoned but then reactivated by Amtrak in the 1990s. And that’s not all a section was completely abandoned that ran to Lower Manhattan. We call it the High Line. As for Riverside Park it’s multi level aspect definitely makes it an ‘interesting’ park to get in and out!

@@LeeHawkinsPhoto so much of the west side has changed that most people today wouldn’t know that it was all one project. It actually cost the equivalent of 2 Hoover Dams (but it was a city/state project so it didn’t get the glory). I think personally that Moses didn’t want to make New York Central’s improvements that obvious so he likely obscured it although it did make the park larger. Unfortunately the parkway makes water access a NIGHTMARE.

CLE has a long history of solid public transportation that has been thwarted by about 2 decades of state funding cuts that get worse every time there’s a recession. Nonetheless, when I attempted to watch the original series, that felt way more like "5 Builders, 1 Map" than it did "5 Builders, 1 City". This second series is far more entertaining to me, due to very fact for which you were apologizing. In a real city, that happens. And, in some, at approximately the in-game rate at which it is happening in Port Concord here. Lol. It's exactly what I was hoping the series would be: Five different developers working on ONE city, wherein their different plans and styles are affected by what others have done, and thus shines through in the development. Well There’s Your Problem and Pres both have a great episode on the us highway system and how it’s construction was used as a weapon against the poor and minority communities. The TLDR; the government used eminent domain to tare out the economic and communal heart of primarily minority and poor neighborhoods. The freeway rebellion mostly happened in upper class neighborhoods where people could afford to take the day off of work to protest. You can actually see some of this, in one US city, I can’t remember the name, there is a partially completed freeway, right through a poor black neighborhood. Right where there used to be a Main Street. The freeway was never completed because wealthy people complained.

I'm not heavily invested in anything Overcharged Egg did in Cheese Park. It's basically leftover land hemmed in by the highway and railroad. He made it look pretty, and that's fine, but it's not very functional, not heavily used. The road that you put through there is elevated so it doesn't cut the park in two the way an at grade road would, people can still get from one side to the other without confronting heavy traffic. Eliminate the solar tower and you've got space to add back the gazebos, or something nicer and more functional, like say a botanical garden. I'm not a fan of the revised public transit system. It'll need another revision soon. I'd like to see a more comprehensive approach taken... a high capacity double loop that circles the entire city in about 10 stops, with lower capacity feeder lines delivering passengers to each high capacity station. Monorail is my personal favorite for the high capacity transit, and cable cars for the feeder lines. Metro and buses are the more conventional (boring) choices. I hope you do something about all the duplicate high density buildings. Very eye twitching to see the same building over and over all up and down Concord Blvd.

@@ubison I see it now and then as a part of a bypass system to get traffic to flow past congested points with alot of surface traffic. Say you have a dock district with ferries, public transport, shopping, some entertainment and some living. This will get seriusly congested if you try to route traffic near it. So build a tunnel under it that moves traffic that isn't going there to stop there past the hole thing. Same thing with highways and traintracks being borders, you can create a bypass that allow both sides of that border to interact with a tunnel. I use it all the time in city skylines as well when I need to create connectivity between regions that is hard to connect thanks to some form of border that makes building difficult, steep hills mountains, highways/trainrails or highly congested downtown placas and such being prime examples. Second benefit is that you can't really connect local roads to tunnels without intent so any traffic that goes through one is most likley what you intended to use it.
@ubison
@ubison 2 жыл бұрын
@@Solus749 I actually use a lot of tunnels for two reasons. 1. I play with despawning turned off and I am willing to sacrifice realism for functionality. Around here, tunnels aren't realistic. 2. It's hard to make underpasses so sometimes I use a tunnel in place of an underpass.
