Lai shows performing this form at its highest level.

Beautiful to watch someone who is an expert in their system. Some may criticize- but watch Mr. Lai in action with applications and you may change your mind.

Mantis "Bung Bo Kuen" is one of the most popular sets of traditional Kung Fu. It is incorpolrated in the curriculum of Hung Gar and Eagle Claw! Sifu Lai shows power, speed, expression and in his DVD also impressing applications. Really high level!!! 5 points of course...

I studied with Sifu Brendan Lai for several years in SF, CA around 1993. He was a really nice guy, an amazing teacher, accomplished scholar, and super talented. Great video find!

It is said that within this form, is everything you need to learn about the 7 star mantis fighting system. The goal is to have solid stances and fluid footwork (lots of work to get these by themselves), and to break the form down into tiny pieces (intermixed with punch combinations, in all directions). Then, apply one of these tiny pieces of the form during free sparring until you can do it fluidly. Afterwards, apply another piece of the form, etc. etc. Learning it this way is old school and takes lots of hard work and sacrifice, but it is far better to master this original form alone rather than only know 20 different form routines (without application)...

TainoMantis Thats right. But don´t forget to use the stances as techniques...

This is probably the most essential of the Northern Mantis forms. And this is the 7 Star Mantis version. From the Hung Kuen practitioners I know, this is not taught in any Southern Style schools. If anything, they are probably taught Chow Gar Mantis.

Excellent form. Thanks for sharing. I've just started to learn this, and had forgotten some of the techniques. Great review right here.

With all due respect, do you know who Brendan Lai was? He was one of the most respected and skilled masters of the 7 star system. Low stances were/are for training, and if that's not "flow" in the hand and arm movements, you are not watching the same video that I am...

@pattywakingthefallen Yes. All of the northern praying mantis techniques are incorporated into Bung Bo. You just have to break it down and contemplate each of their use.

You can practice Praying Mantis forms with low stances or high stances. The same form, same movements, just low and high stances.

Is this the Tong Long kuen that's in some hung Kuen Systems?
@hemispace641 Жыл бұрын
This is the one. I only recently learned this a few days ago. Some Hung Kuen lineages have the 7-Star Praying Mantis handset known as "Bung Bo". I believe the Hung Kuen lineages that contain it have close ties with Ching Woo
@cecils66875 жыл бұрын
As mentioned before the Praying Mantis has NO LOWER body movement and you must know other forms of Martial Arts that has lower body movement to integrate the two strategies together. Brendan Lai was my uncle and his sister was Anna Lai. I have learned KunTao and Ninpo Tai jitsu and integrated them together with 7 Stars to make it more effective! I am 50 years old and it has taken me my life time to do this. Best Regards Uncle.
