I've had 6 rabbits and there isn't a one that didn't have a bout of stasis at some point in their lifespan. It's extremely common and extremely scary. Usually they could kick it with some gut stimulating meds and a heat pack, but we did have one (also a dwarf) who was fine one evening and gone by the next morning. The little ones are so fragile.

I'm surprised poncho made it after not eating for 1.5 days. Most rabbits die after not eating for 8-12 hours so if your bun has not eaten in more than a few hours talk to your vet. Also have a good exotic emergency vet lined up because gastric issues in rabbits cannot wait until normal business hours

Do you all not have access to Oxbow's Critical Care, or Sherwoods Appetite Restore? They both have worked wonders for me. My rabbit has had GI stasis 3 times. Once after her spay, once when I first got her, and another time during shedding season. 2 days after I started force feeding her Critical Care, she pooped, and started eating.

For anyone who is new to caring for a bunny: PLEASE do not wait this long to see a vet if you rabbit has stopped eating. Try and have a rabbit-savvy vet (check around for a vet that actually regularly sees rabbits--it makes a difference) lined up as well as an emergency vet that can see rabbits in case your vet is unavailable. You want to make sure your rabbit sees a vet within 6 hours of not eating if you can. I also suggest having simethicone (baby gas drops) on hand, fresh "smelly" greens your rabbit loves (like cilantro), recovery food such as Critical Care (refrigerate to keep it longer), and fresh hay--ask your vet to show you how to force feed with Critical Care since it can be tricky. If you can get the approval/training, pain meds like meloxicam and subcutaneous fluids are also very helpful! Also make sure your bun has a warm place (like a heated pad or warm rice sock) they warm up with--a cold bunny cannot digest food properly! I am surprised they did not decompress his stomach? Or perhaps they did and they just didn't talk about it....it looks like they have been offering him foods/force-feeding him given the food on his face the next morning. I mean, I am not a vet, but I had a rabbit that a few issues and went through bloat twice as well as regular GI stasis episodes--he is the reason I now have the supplies on hand and additional training. The first bloat was a crazy emergency where, once the exotic vet came in an looked at him, many additional steps were taken (such as stomach decompression). He was not so lucky the second time and he went into cardiac arrest while being treated for shock and did not make it. :(

I know, my heart dropped when she said he hadn't eaten in a day and a half. That is so long for a rabbit. I had a rabbit that developed GI stasis after being treated with oral medication for an eye infection. It was a grueling two days of every two hours giving him medications and trying to force feed him Critical Care food. Rabbits do not have a high pain tolerance and he was lethargic and really had no will to live. I was desperately trying to find anything to help and started doing tummy massages. Within a few hours he woke me up and demanded that I feed him. All of his fight came back and he was trying to scale me to get his food quicker. He even started eating the litter in his litter box when I wasn't giving him food fast enough. I never want to go through that again. It is so important to carefully watch your rabbits and know their habits so that you know as soon as possible something is wrong. If you don't see your rabbits eat for a few hours, offer them a treat that they like, if they won't eat it, you should probably call your vet.

I can't believe she waited a full day and a half before getting the bunny in to the vet.. then again, my experience with Stasis in rabbits comes from my friend's bunny, who would basically rather die than EVER miss a meal. So when I went in to give him his breakfast and he didn't come charging out at me, I honestly immediately thought he was already dead. I had a feeling in my gut that he was laying dead in the room, because NOTHING stopped this rabbit from getting his breakfast. I eventually found him hiding under the furniture, and managed to get him to the vet.. he had early stage stasis caused by a spur on one of his teeth that was making him not able to chew properly and causing pain. Quick bit of dental care and he was right as rain, and will still basically attempt to tackle you to the ground to get his breakfast... But don't you DARE try and give him a banana... he HATES bananas.

I almost lost my lil chihuahua to parvo. He was almost dead before he actually recovered. I had to beg my parents to take him to the vet and help me pay for it. I did what the vet said and after a few weeks he started to recover. Oddly enough he went temporarily blind after that. Eventually he recovered completely. I dont have him anymore he was taken from my yard a while back but he was like my baby. Ive also had to foster lambs and hand raise them. Most of the ones that came to me were very very sick. They didnt make it and died in my arms. But I tried to nurse them. One of them died of old age. Two died of bloat. As far as I know there was air trapped in their stomachs causing them to distend and the only way I knew to fix it was to make a small hole in the abdomen and put a tube in it to let out the air. Unfortunately death by infection was too great. We didnt have an experienced vet to do the procedure so they ended up passing away. It broke my heart. I love animals so it hurts sooo bad to see them suffer and pass away.

It's very important for pet owners to find a vet who understands the bond we have with our pets, whether that bond be strong or extremely strong. When I got my childhood dog, our first three vets didn't care one bit about animals, even less so about the concept of pets. To them an animal was either valuable for it provided meat or milk or it wasn't valuable and so was best euthanized even if otherwise healthy. I was the only client with a pet to them, needless to say, I was horrified when they told me after the second visit for his vaccines : "he has a slight heart murmur, best we kill him off right away instead of wasted money on vaccines for a sick dog." Not only did I change veterinary clinic before the visit was even over, walking the 8 km with my puppy in my arms to that other practice, to prove to my parents, I was serious, but my tiny poodle lived healthy for 14 years, and except on vet examination, it was impossible to tell he had a heart murmur, so active and lively he was right until 3 months before he died, and not of a heart problem, may I add. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the other vets could do their jobs, but they simply were not interested in animals, and had no idea about there being a bond and were of the mind that animals do not count, so that we had a right to kill them if they were of no use or pleasure to us anymore. So they were like some doctors to humans who do not understand that when their patients are terminally ill or something like that, the entire family and circle of friends suffer too for them. As much as it cost me emotionally ad psychologically, I did the right thing when my dog started to suffer, deteriorated rapidly and could not recover but only get worse so for another day at max. Yet, I'm almost certain that had I not found that second clinic, with a caring vet, who knew about pets, I'd not have been able to do it, for I'd have been under the impression that the vets were not trying to save him, whereas I knew that this vet would have done everything humanly possible, and that if he was telling me, he could not help my dog, he could only keep him away from me over night, so that I would not see him passing away but that he'd suffer, it was the truth and I had to be there for my dog and go through that with him and for him.

Oh wow. I’m so sorry that happened to your dog and you both. That is some serious bad luck to encounter such horrible vets. I’ve had guinea pigs for nearly all my life so far and the vets have always been very kind, knowing that even our smallest animals are very important to their humans. I plan on being a vet myself because of that, no matter the animal, people can always develop a special bond with them and it’s important for vets to understand that and to work with that.
@auChevalierRed
@auChevalierRed 2 жыл бұрын
@@lavishlyvice Thank you for these kind words and for caring for animals! I hope your guinea pigs are all doing well and I'm sure you will become a great vet too. I guess the main vet at that clinic probably did not want to have another vet steal the show by caring to the well-being of his patients and thus picked vets like himself. You would have expected a vet clinic within a city full of pets to care for pets rather than to chose to only "care" for animals for the meat trade. I wish they had simply told me from the start that they did not like pets. Anyway, every pet owner has moved away from them by now and so have most of the farmers too, as people started to wonder from their experience with their own pets, how could these three be treating farm animals and so hesitated buying milk products at the market when the farmer used that vet trio. A pity though, as they were down the road from me, so it felt reassuring to have a veterinary clinic so close, should an emergency ever arise.

OMG...crying SO HARD right now over Poncho...I have two bunnies and this is breaking my heart. I'm at the point of them leaving him overnight on an IV drip and I'm almost afraid to keep watching since two other episodes with bunnies both had the bunny die...😭

I had to put one of my bunnies to sleep 2 weeks ago (december 7th). She stopped eating so after the first visit to the vet I fed her recovery for a day but she ended up probably having a tumor. I'm still not 100% if that was the case or if it was something else but she was in such bad shape and pain that any anesthetic or operation would have probably been fatal, so unfortunately we decided it was best to put her to sleep. So happy this little guy made it yet so sad again mine didn't 😭.

Seeing the fur get everywhere reminds me that I was wearing a black jacket, next moment it's covered in fur from me cuddling and patting our Rabbit. All my black jacket was pretty much covered in fur. It was hard to get them all off. Hahaha. It's been months and I still miss that Rabbit that thought he was a cat and a dog. I hope I meet another Rabbit that has this weird personality, yet sweet and loving furball.

My baby bunny was on the edge of death, two times, once because he had Pellets, it was not even that much less than a teaspoon everyday once, but he has a sensitive stomach so he got bloated, the second time it was because of a tick. He still didn't have a name so after all this I named him Phoenix, and right now he is jumping and making binkies 🌹(don't worry guys I have a second bun too, they are siblings, so he isn't alone, her name is Meduza because she is so fierce, confident and so insurgent 🤭)

The rabbit parents of poncho are lucky he’s alive at all. He had gut stasis and that can be quickly fatal to rabbits. Gi stasis can claim the life of a rabbit in as little as 12 hours to a day. So the fact that he wasn’t seen by the vet till a day and a half later and was still alive is a miracle in itself. And the fact that the vet was able to treat this prolonged stasis successfully is even more a miracle. I hope the vet gives Poncho’s parents some rabbit care literature to read and take home w them so they have more knowledge and are better educated on caring for their rabbit. They seem to love him dearly, I just think they need to be a lot more informed about rabbits. They need guidance and to put in the time to learn about their rabbit’s needs, the risks, and the health dangers to look out for. Responsible rabbit parents know that gi is common and a huge and deadly threat to the life of any rabbit. You could literally lose your rabbit in less than a day to gi stasis, it’s that bad so you have to act quick and not wait esp if your rabbit hasn’t been eating or pooping for 12 hours. They’ve had him for 3 yrs so they really need to do better and educate themselves on rabbit care, there’s no excuse. Gi stasis in rabbits is the number one thing every rabbit parent has to watch out for. It’s serious and unfortunately common.

This episode really pulled at my heart. Dr. Alex and Dr. Gerardo make a cute couple. I'm so happy for them. Poncho and Diesel had me crying so much. I'm ecstatically happy they are ok. Poncho is a little fighter, so cute. Diesel is a senior dog. Things don't always go in the right direction. But Diesel will need more TLC. Which Dr. Gerardo already gives. Just cherish every moment wit Diesel and your going to be ok. It's tough to lose a beloved pet that is part of you, a part of you.

rabbits, like cats, get hairballs from self grooming. Unfortunately, they can't barf them up like cats do. Food they can go without for a number of days, but they need water intake. Water helps move the trapped vegetable matter out of the hairball, ergo shrinking it in size, and hopefully small enough they can start passing it. I raised Angora rabbits for many years and it was something we always watched for. Not just eating up their allotted measure of pellets but also what was passing out the other end. We'd actually fast the rabbits one day a week, only giving them a tiny bit of raw broccoli, apple or banana, a handful of straw (great fiber!) and free access to water. If caught in time, it's actually easy to treat and get them over.

I can completely empathize with Diesel. I had a spine/spinal cord injury about 10 years ago and while we're not sure if it was related or not, it came on shortly after my injury. I developed something called benign positional vertigo and it is exactly like what Sheik endures. My eyes would flicker, the room seem tilted, if I could have walked at the time there is no way it'd have been in a straight line. It is absolutely nauseating. Poor puppy. Clearly Diesel is a much loved family member. The bond is clearly understood by Dr. Poli now. It's sad to see.
