Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

When I was a kid we used to go every year to a seaside resort. The thing was that the only way to get there would be on a boat. So you'd drive there, put your bags on the boat, it would take you there, and then a few weeks later take you back. And we had loads of friends there that we'd only ever see there, and only once a year. You saying goodbye to your friends on that boat reminded me of that. Of sitting on the dock, waiving goodbye to your friends, knowing that there will be so much time until you see them again... Knowing that soon enough it will be your turn, and people will wave at you from the dock, wondering when they'll see you again.

In the even of a tsunami, no the boats would not be safe. They appear fastened down so they would be swamped with the incoming water. But worse all of the "loose" boats would be carried up like battering rams. Then the destruction when all of the water recedes carrying trees and debris from inland. Best place for a boat is deep water on the other side of the planet. Love seeing the various boats.

With sailboats, steel only makes sense in high latitudes (because of ice), otherwise the benefits do not justiify the significacant additional maintenance.

Burying boats will keep them from falling over. If the wind is strong enough, the masts of sailboats can be broken. If there is sufficient storm surge, burying won’t help. Stay in hurricane areas and you takes your chances.

Hi Barry, I've followed your videos since Spain, but first comment. Last year I finally followed your footsteps, sailing the boat I bought ib Panama across to FP and then Fiji. Imagine my delight in watching this video, I gather from mid-winter last year, as you occupied the mooring spot next to that small white steel boat with the green footprints on it, that looks abandoned, because I ended up in the next slot along, the one with the Amel, next to the big round "abandoned" catamaran (now apparently moved). And my boat, Sea Change, is still there. No cyclones hit Fiji this past summer, so I feel justified in leaving her there, but sadly although I was supposed to get back there this week, it will be August while I recover from shoulder surgery. So now you will be a year ahead of me as you are now in Australia, while I will only get there in November. Still I hope we meet up somewhere one day. Check the end of the last video on my channel to see my view of Vuda Point marina. Happy sailing and best wishes. Hugh

A fantastic lady at Waya Island with her tame lizard... and best of all, the Widow Va out on Nanuya Lailai near Turtle Island. It's pronounced 'Nandi'...and our son Henry was called 'Hendri' by the local Fijian - never quite figured out why the extra 'D' was included!! 😂. And the curries are excellent - Fiji Indian curries have a unique flavour, quite different than other Indian curries I've had. The Fijians make a good Fish curry, with onions, coriander, chilli, spinach and coconut milk (If I remember correctly) - dead easy to make - one pot cooking!

Just to correct you, steel boats are nothing like timber boats. Yes, they rust from the inside out, but rust always starts at a point where moisture and oxygen are available and where a coating fails, often a small metal scrap sitting on the surface or a scratch or split on the surface point. What you see is often what there is. Not another 75% in hiding which is true of timber boats. Usually only a few centimetres from a hole you will find full thickness steel. Moisture doesn't 'creep' along inside steel like it does in timber. A cut and weld is usually an easy fix for a steel boat. They don't have the structural issues of timber boat repairs.
