As a Genk-fan, I felt this coming after our friendly, when Burnley had a hard time creating chances agains us even though our defense was our weakest point + WE WERE BASICALLY PLAYING OUR BENCH. We only threw in almost the entire A-team 10 minutes ahead of time and Burnley broke down entirely. The same A-team that would go on to bottle European qualifiers against Servette Genève and Olympiakos, as well as our start in the Pro League. The way I see it: Kompany has a possession based philosophy, that really worked well in the Championship. He really brought the team to a level that was higher then the sum of the players. In the Prem however, the quality difference between those players and the rest becomes too big, and the little defensive mistakes get exploited to a larger extend. In attack, Kompanyball is never really all that vertical, so you have to crack down defenses with quick and swift combinations, forcing them to make the errors, which is also easier to do against teams in the Championship then in the Premier League. Kompanyball is ideal when you are one of the top-6 teams in a league trying to outplay the other 5 by asserting more controll over games then they do. But it becomes unrealistic when you have to go up against teams at a higher level. Better players are supposed to compensate for this, though I question if just improving on some positions is going to be enough. They'll have to adjust tactically. Vince's a really charismatic guy, a sympathetic fellow, whose players will absolutely go though a brick wall for him, but he's also stubborn. And that might turn out to become a problem. Although I don't really see how Burnley would be able to do well with another coach handling the players meant for his system....

@@DieEneNoah Vertonghen deserved what he got last night. His whole 'performance' throughout the game was the most OUTRAGEOUS display of poor sportmanship that I have EVER seen in our stadium. (And we used to have Thomas Buffel as one of our own.) As for Kompany, I assume that you are talking about 2019.... He had just arrived at Anderlecht as "player-coach" and had given countless interviews talking about coaching in the JPL as if it was nothing, talking about the combination of both player and manager as if it was nothing, speaking of title ambitions while he had basically just taken control of (atm) the worst Anderlecht in years.... Then there was the whole "who's gonna be the captain" soap opera in the Belgian press.... Their was a sort of "benevolent arrogance" about it all that annoyed a lot of Belgian football fans on social media. Only in Anderlecht nobody seemed to notice this. So when he got one of his first games as "player coach" at our place and during the game.... he got injured AGAIN.... there was spontaneous laughter and ironic clapping in the audience. This mockery seemed to annoy his dad, who then went to the press. I was in the stadium that day. This was it. This was everything. Nothing else. No "boo-ing" or shit like that as Vertonghen rightfully got. Anderlecht-fans are now crying everywhere on their socials because they feel buthurt over our public beef with Vertonghen and the referee. Fact is: most Genk-fans have spoken quite respectfully about Kompany in recent years and after our friendly game he himself even said a few nice words about the club. So nobody outside of people like you still even remember this happening. So stop acting like a victim. You lost 2 points yesterday. You should have lost 3. Be happy with that one you got too much....

I think the biggest issue stems from Kompany's efforts to create a young and inexperienced squad that can play a high-press without having to recruit multiple Premier League veterans. Apart from the core group of players that Burnley kept from the Dyche era; Cork, Gudmundsson, Brownhill, Cullen, Rodriguez and Roberts almost none of Burnley's new additions have no more than 2 seasons of full top-flight experience in a top 5 league apart from Redmond who just left Besiktas (ironically playing with Weghorst who was loaned there from Burnley). Plus the two biggest losses for Burnley's return to the Premier League are Nick Pope who was arguably a top 5 keeper in the Premier League since Burnley's shock 7th place finish and Nathan Tella who was not only their top goalscorer in the Championship last season but the best player in my opinion. Kompany is playing an incredibly risky campaign that could reap massive long-term rewards, but unlike his mentor at Man City he lacks the budget and is too ambitious. It's like Guardiola deciding after winning the Championship League to replace Haaland and De Bruyne with two unknown youngsters.
@sebastiencrusener4968
@sebastiencrusener4968 8 ай бұрын
I agree with you. I see exactly the same issues as he had with Anderlecht (I'm from Belgium): he's a strong believer of the high press tactic, playing attractive and offensive football, the same way Man City does (and Anderlecht 10 years ago), which works very well if you have a good squad and in the Championship he had the best team. Their squad is just too weak to play his system in de PL, exactly the way it was with Anderlecht a couple of years ago (because Anderlecht was/is virtually bankrupt so they couldn't get the best players anymore. I think he even put some of his own money in the club). He's not a bad coach at all but he's too much of an optimist and therefore too naïve I guess.

Nah it’s not about experience, it’s simply about having quality. As a Brentford fan we are kind of the perfect example. @@sebastiencrusener4968 When you look at the likes of Benfica, Ajax, Celtic and RB Salzburg the lower-quality competition allows them to experiment with a lot of young players due to the lack of UCL-level competition. Kompany had that luxury in the Championship League but now has to contend with the Premier League veterans in almost every game and UCL-level competition in nearly half the fixtures. Kompany needs better players with short-term value to avoid relegation, otherwise, the experiment in Burnley ends after 2 seasons and Dyche could return considering how terrible Everton are run.

I think Kompany should focus more on a compact defense and a high line in the premier with the current team is suicidal. There is also the fact of soo many new players take time to gel in. So a better strategy would be to slowly face in and acclimatize the new signings. Having those 3 games to kick off the season for a newly promoted team is just terrible luck. I think it is doable to save the ship and play a good season, but you need to bring the ship in order and work things from there

I’m a Brentford fan and there are some interesting parallels between our first prem season. Tbh tho we had zero prem experience. Literally our squad had like 3 prem appearances between them. We also didn’t really have a RB (except Roerslev who plays more now but was still very much a backup) and played a winger or CB there predominantly. It worked for us because we had solid tactics and a good enough young squad. Don’t think the factors discussed mean they can’t resolve it if they figure enough stuff out.

Everytime I think about this Burnley team, I remember Paco Jémez's Rayo Vallecano. They played an offensive style of football, but also got battered by big teams (that time they lost 10-2 to Real Madrid...). It went well for them the first couple of seasons, but they were eventually relegated with that same manager. At the beginning of the season I was curious to see how Burnley would fare with this approach. So far, I don't think they're doing that bad. I mean, they were not supposed to beat any of the first 3 teams they've played. It was very much realistic to expect 0-1 pts from these 3 matches. Next game against Nottingham Forest is probably the first big test for this team. If they're not capable of winning these kind of games, it's over.

As a Kosovan who follows Muric closely, it’s a no-brainer to start him. Not only he knows Kompany’s system but he has far more experience than Trafford. For example, when Kosovo played against England for World Cup qualifiers in Wembley he was great and also saved a penalty from Kane and he also saved Man City in a penalty shootout against Leicester. He’s taller, stronger and far better on the ball than Trafford and has more experience. Kompany knows Muric since they were teammates in Man City and knows how good he was last year. He should definitely start him since he didn’t do anything to take that title away.

Burnley's tactics are great when you have a team that is on par with league average. However, having jumped to the premier league this is no longer the case and attempting to replicate it leaves gaps that can be exploited both by high-pressing teams and counter attacking teams. There is a reason smaller teams surviving in the premier league often play low block and counter. Kompany's tactics simply can't work in the PL with his current squad. There will be an occasional win every now and then, maybe even an impressive win, but that's about it.

The GULF between the Top 2 Divisions is now a CHASM,.I'm afraid. You have to hope Wolves struggle and Everton doesn't improve * * SPOILER..Over the last 25 years. A lot of people going "Oh Burnley play really good football" as if doing the exact opposite didn't give Burnley the greatest underdog story (that isn't Leicester) in the Premier League, getting to Europe with a squad of Championship nobodies. "Really good football" doesn't keep you up. Kompany's overextended. He wants to play a certain way that you can't do. He needs to play more industrially with hopes the creativity up front makes up for the goals. High lines only work against teams that don't make a living exploiting such a thing.

Dont think tactics is the issue tbh, it takes some time for players to get used to PL plus the run of fixture doesn't help

I saw Burnley play yesterday and it wasn't even that bad. Some good play at times in de first half. But because I had not seen them for a long time I went to look into the history of some of the players. Many are just not experienced at all. For example the right back is from St Truiden in Belgium... That is just simply no good level for PL. The difference is too big. Maybe things will turn around when they are some games in but it's going to be very difficult.

11:22 Hi Vizeh! Always enjoyed your videos man, I think their wonderful! On the other hand Burnley is not that wonderful, and I am being very kind with my words😂. The funny thing is that I went to high school with Johann and I played with him there all the time and I knew he would be a pro sooner than later! So it's very jarring to hear you say he doesn't have the pace and I remember that we're turning 33 this October😢 Anyway, slight tangent there but really love your videos and I hope Burnley turn things around.

I agree with most of what you have mentioned. However it will get better as there is a lot of quality in the team. It’s unfortunate that we have played against what l would call quality teams for the first three games. If it had been say Luton,Bournemouth Sheffield Utd or Palace we could now be sat nearer the top and all would be good. UTC

Hate to say "I told you so". Spoke to a few Burnley fans giving it large predicting mid table. It reminded me of when Norwich came up, a really good open attacking team, they brought that style to the PL and seems to loose 5-2 most weeks. I accepted that Burnley could finish mid table or but warned that bottom of the league is probably more likely. Many Burnley fans refused to believe that Burnley could struggle stating their open attacking style. Mentioned that Kompany is still a novice and would be very naive to try to play attacking football.

I think last season great performance happened because they were on the championship with teams of lower level which enabled burnley to play more offensively because they had superior talent but now since the are in a higher tier they should focus more in having a compact block and be more competitive instead of focusing in beautiful play.

The thing is, for a team to play like Man City, Arsenal, Barca, etc., it's good to have the idea, but if you don't have the talent, it won't work against teams that do, that's why the big clubs try to do it because they have money to pay for that talent, it's sad but it's the reality

Don't worry to much yet. Man City Villa Spurs is a tough first 3 games. Kompany needs time to figure things out. A lot of new players. I'm sure you will come good. My bottom 3 are Luton Sheffield United Everton. At least Burnley look like they have goals in them

You need quality to play a high like like Burnley at trying to do, Burnley only managed to stay in the Prem because Dyche played a low block and countered, which caught big teams off guard This Burnley team are trying a new style which will take time to implement and will need the right players to do so, I expect them to get better as time goes on, especially when playing other relegation favourites like Everton, Sheffield and possible Wolves too

burnley have played really good teams so far. but equally i think Kompany needs to adapt slightly. Fulham played a very similiar style when they won the championship in 21/22 but marco Silva knew that they coulodnt play the wy they did in the championship in the premier league because it would leave them too open. so he adapted his style and Fulham became a eally tough team to play because of the high quality mid-block that he implemented it was helped by the quality of players they had like João Palhinha for example as well as Berd Leno too.

Problem is Kompany was never tested on his way of playing not working out, only minor adjustments were made. Now he has to figure it out entirely and start from scratch. He may not be up to the task and he knows it. This is when a young manager needs a mentor, because every manager with a long career has been through this.

We need to play the playerS in their nest natural positions; so as you said Roberts RB, Taylor LB etc its crazy and so far tactically suicidal. If Taylor is no good why did we not get another proper LB in the window? We had plenty of time to do so. I think we need a sitting Defensive midfielder to mop up trouble in front of the our defence and act as a safety value for the team. Therefore,I don't think we can play 442. I agree, Muric must make a return as well as I think it's too soon for Trafford. I expect Vinny to deal with these issues and tighten up and give ourselves a chance for points or it's is going to be a terrible time for fans this season.

Its early, and are in a league of two halves, the top six(or eight) clubs, and the rest which is where we are. I never expect, although I hope, we beat teams like Unites, City, Villa, Newcastle, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, but the reality we probably won't and the best we can hope for is a draw. We have a brutal start to the season, look at who we play, one mistake and its a goal against us, has as been shown. We are a new team, learning each others play and nuances, it will take a half dozen games at least to see an improvement, my only concern and one that you have shared is the goals against, its a stat that could bite us at seasons end. I saw in improvement in our lay in the first half against Spurs, then Son took over and it was a road to nowhere pretty quickly. We'll be OK.
