Here I am trying to clean copper wire, which had been burnt through a voltage surge. The wire was stripped but it was tarnished black/grey. Today I try using vinegar to clean and a combination of vinegar and salt. Watch the colour change. Does this effect the bright copper price? Leave a comment if you know and is there a way I can make the wire shiny again? I did clean and rinse the wire with water.
I will be bringing more videos on how to be environmentally friendly in your everyday life whilst being sustainable. I hope that you enjoy the ride and find it useful. My main interests like in waste recycling, scrapping, caring for the environment and doing volunteer clean ups.
I film using an Apple IPhone 7, as the budget just yet will not allow buying a Gopro.

Can't help you with that, but it really does change colour. When in doubt..ask your hubby. He said it shouldn't matter because they are just going to melt it down anyway. ( he said they aren't wearing it like a hat so the colour shouldn't make any difference.) his words not mine. : D

So, what i found was that if the wire/cable is still intact and unraveled, the easiest way to make it appear to be bare bright, is to use the wire wheel on the bench grinder. Keywords being “appear to be”. The thing is, the burnt aspect goes all the way inside, but if you can, KEEP IT UNRAVELED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE & & AS STRAIGHT AS POSSIBLE (to make it easier to use w/the wire wheel), & you can probably hide the fact that it’s still actually burnt on the inside strands. The wire wheel does a nice job of cleaning the outermost strands, & getting in the nooks and crannies between the first layer of those strands, but that’s it.

Thanks for trying that I will give it a try next time I have burnt wire. I will never use vinegar again as it didn’t pay off. Thanks for the tips. Cheers

I haven't tried it but from what I've seen is if you get it hot first and then dip in the solution before water rinse it is instant

Scraping is a long term goal/hobby melting down is the way to keep the addiction strong. Make it a 5 year bonus run really worth it then.

I have some alternatives, if u care to read about them: Sandpaper or steel wool both work, and both break down into particulate matter, or whatever size shit that dust is. The steel wool is easier to work w/, in the sense that it can wrap around the individual strands easier (or curves of braided, as a whole), forming to shape more efficiently. But sandpaper seems to be quicker. I have only done a quick experiment w/#0000 steel wool, & 100grit sandpaper, and only on a short piece of wire, so take this info w/a grain of salt, so to speak, like any other info. i believe steel wool is fairly cheaper than sandpaper, and for what amount you get for both, i think the steel wool might last longer, but idk. I think one can get more steel wool for the same amount of $ spent on sandpaper, but the sandpaper seemed to work quicker, and in a way, was more durable, espesh if you take the time to put tape on the backside, like duct or clear packing tape. Sounds like some definite experimenting will arise. So check it out - another way to brighten it up, is if u have a wire wheel on a bench grinder, and hold the wire at a diagonal angle when running it up and down/above-to-below/below-to-above, ive gotten good results as well, except for the wheel occasionally (“somewhat often”, may be more accurate) catching on the wire, slamming it down. It’d prob take a very long time for the wire wheel to break down, so this may be the most economical, and possibly the fastest method of the three ive mentioned.. I havent ran any tests of significant depth for any of these methods yet, but am about to w/about 300-320lbs of burnt wire. This stuff has big gauges, for the majority of the load, w/gauges of individual strands are between what looks to be 18AWG-10AWG, perhaps. I happen to have a lot of time on my hands, so i think im gonna go through a gamut of potential solutions to turn it from #2 wire to bare bright. Ive soaked wire in vinegar before, but having it lose all of its lustre, i cant be having that, not w/300+ lbs... i’ll be back to comment on some results by the end of today, methinks.

Great comment. After a few days in the shed and after neutralizing the vinegar the wire lost all its lustre. When I took it to the scrap yard they only gave me number two grade price. So I completely wasted my time doing this work. My advice now is not to do it. There was no value in doing what I did. But you live an learn. I was looking for a quick fix and it did not work. I will try your suggested methods next time. Thanks for your input. Cheers.

So do u jus only use steel wool and salt to clean it ,,,no liquid added??
@6980869
@6980869 11 ай бұрын
@unknowntruth9586 I dont fuck with the salt, and use only steel wool or sandpaper, if i wanna brighten shit up at all. Normally, i just take it in as #2. If i already have some bare bright, with a lil #2 that has potential to be bare bright fairly quick and easy - nothing too oxidized green or too thick - then I’ll go for it. But as they say, time is money, so make that judgment call

After you remove the Copper from the salt and vinegar how do you keep it from corroding ? Every time I do this To my Romex It comes out As bare bright but then within an hour it's turning green How do I prevent this Between the time I clean it and making it to the scrap yard ?

Baking soda and water then rinse

Yes you have to neutralize the acid aka vinegar what happens it its will dry and continue to eat the. Copper hot water and baking soda rinses will cure that issue if it is being store to accumulate I recommend something like wd40 or an oil that u can spray on it to prevent it from tarnishing nobody wants to sand allllll that lol

Why polish it? it doesnt add value . I actually dont strip wire anymore, I stripped a 2cm wire untill i had 1mm wires left. Got me 3 bucks when i sold them for 3 hours of work and ruining my swiss knive. Its not worth it unless you have really thick pices.

Really old comment, but some scrapyards want legitimate "bare bright" and will downgrade wire that's obviously been burnt. I'm an electrician and make about 150 every couple months pulling my grounds out of romex and stripping everything 10AWG or larger with a rack-a-tiers brand stripper. Should you just want to strip with a knife, a straight blade (exacto) is your friend.

If you rinse it in water when you remove it from the vinegar, then rub it with bicarb of soda, then rinse and rub with a microfiber cloth, it will bring back the shine 😉.

@@scrappydoo7887 Its instant! If it is unstripped. It wouldnt do anything if it isn't stripped. As soon as it enters the solution it changers colour 😁👍. It will look more of a pink colour when it comes out, but it will change as soon as you rub it with bicarb of soda (that's what we call it in the UK, Arm and Hammer stuff etc). Give it a try 😉👍🇬🇧
