One of the great things about Jackie Chan fights is that the choreography always makes him work for the win. You watch him get beaten up in a way that rarely happens with Bruce Lee (or, more recently, Jet Li or Donny Yen) - like the sore shins after all those leg checks. It humanises his heroes in a way that makes you root for them even more.
@josephgriffiths9151
@josephgriffiths9151 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. He's always at a disadvantage, and he doesn't win because he suddenly pulls out some mystical secret technique that gives him the edge, or otherwise has some plot armour on his side - he wins purely because he doesn't give up.

So the Chinese henchman was using Choy Li Fut, a Southern Chinese style known for its powerful arcing punches. The basic philosophy is that you condition the hell out of your arms and use them as battering rams. While some of its movements may appear to leave the fighter open, the first swing is usually the setup for the second swing, which is the hit (ie, the first swing destroys the guard and the second swing fills that opening). The guy here put on a great display of it in his first bout with Chan with his wide swings and seamless spinning punches.

@tor13128

Actually, to be precise, it wasn't that guy hitting Jackie. Jackie clearly stated that if he attacks moving forward, he must block moving backward. HOWEVER, JACKIE DOES NOT WANT TO BLOCK MOVING BACKWARD. However, Smoorenburg had great difficulty with timing and distance gauging that he kept moving forward while striking, but Jackie does not want to move back. You can also see Smoorenburg had great problem with just timing alone. After many retakes, he still missed a simple timing mid choreography. Jackie already moved, but Smoorenburg was still turning. Jackie can easily pull a Mayweather and just move back, but they are doing a specific planned choreography and Smoorenburg just apparently was never trained to kick at the pads in the same spot. Jackie just asked him to place his kicks at the same spot in front of him, but the guy kept kicking past the striking point designated. Imagine me as a coach training a complete fighter. Moving forward is ONE good drill, but a complete fighter must adjust their strikes' contact points, distance, etc. So, instead of just moving back for my fighter, I would hold the pad at the same spot and tell him to pinpoint strike it. That's all Jackie was asking. Clearly Smoorenburg's coach only moved backwards for him, so Smoorenburg actually experienced some new drills while filming this, ironically. Brings to mind fighters like Pacquiao who can punch with speed and power moving in all directions, and even change impact point and adjust contact integrity mid strike on a moving opponent. Jackie was just asking Smoorenburg to strike the designated points, but Smoorenburg kept on striking past the designated points. that's like me holding the pad, not moving back for him, then he kicks deeper than the pad.

Brad Allen is from 3:54 to 4:00 replacing Ron Smoorenburg because Ron couldn't do choreography without moving forward where choreography required him to hold place while performing the kicks. So Brad Allen did the job, and it's quite noticable because in that shot the character is shorter then Jackie Chan while Ron is few heads taller then Jackie :-D Never the less Ron performed very well here both choreographywise and actingwise. Definitelly movie that inspired me a lot to improve myself in martial arts. Such a good performance by everyone in this movies.

This series of reaction vids is great and im happy to see so many people in the english speaking world giving jackie his props. Just to add what may not be explicitly stated: for much of this fight and many of his others, jackie doesnt need objects or props to make a good fight scene. Sure he uses the cement bags, the earring, and the jacket, but those are far from being the most memorable moments of this fight. He is extremely good at choreo, storytelling, acting, and cinematography for fights, with or without props.

The fall Dutch guy is Rob Smoorenburg and he's a stunt coordinator working in Thailand. He doesn't have a competition background worth mentioning. What he shows in terms of skill is definitely not kickboxing. I'm pretty sure he has a taekwondo background and I assume in Thailand he trains some kind of thaiboxing. He also had the national record for the highest kick in the 90s which seems like a taekwondo-esk thing.

Yeah, I saw the Dutch fighter in Triple Threat aswell (you should watch some fight scenes from that movie, stacked with martial arts actors).

The one who did the flying kick wasn't the Dutch kickboxer. It was Jackie's own stuntman Brad Allen. R.I.P.

The first jump kick and double for Ron, is in fact Brad Allen :) because of the timing issue as you mention :)

There's some good fights in The Foreigner, more serious than his other films. The pachinko half fight in Thunderbolt is worth a watch too.

Jackie's first biography starts at the point of the big stunt for this movie. Slide down the side of the building. He goes through what he is feeling and what made him fearless when it comes to these stunts (The opera school he was indentured to for his childhood). By the way, only Australia would allow him to film this stunt due to lack of insurance coverage.
