Great video and welcome to bus driving. I'm a 15 year veteran who switched to cargo van briefly and I can say the one major benefit is the passengers load themselves. Lol. As well I feel vs truck driving your not as lonely per say. You have the people factor. Aside from a few bad apples for the most part you will meet some great passengers in this industry. Anyways thanks for the great video and please keep them coming.

How many weeks of training did they give you? As a motorcoach operator do you have regular runs or so they have you on call? You wasn't lying about greyhound especially when they give you runs you didn't want to do. I don't my cdl yet i still plan to study for my cdl permit again. How long was you a trucker before you went to Greyhound then Academy Bus?
@truckingwithdom
@truckingwithdom Жыл бұрын
I’m sorry I didn’t see this comment. I did one week of training with Academy and they fast tracked me because I had prior experience driving motor coach. Greyhound is good company but it’s too much politics and nonsense for me. I drove busses from 2018 and trucks during the pandemic and periodically. I’ve always been a bus driver.

Hey Jimmy. I could have sworn I responded to this comment, sorry! I actually turned down MTA to get back on the truck but they have great equipment going into their fleet. Academy was great too but I missed being on the truck. Greyhound was a mess all around. From the management to the equipment, I got to the point where I wasn’t happy and I was bummed out each day when it was time to go to work. There was also a issue where the union negotiated the contract and forced drivers to be on runs they didn’t bid for and it was again, a mess.

@truckingwithdom
@truckingwithdom Жыл бұрын
Hey, great question. When I was at greyhound they had just kicked in a new union contract. It forced me On a run I didn’t want although I only requested to be on the extra board. You can make more money on the board versus being a fixed operator. If you get your CDL just train with another bus company like Academy or your local motor coach company and make good money.

@truckingwithdom
@truckingwithdom Жыл бұрын
@@aarongaillard9920 my pleasure. Greyhound is a great place to start but in my personal opinion the training is a bit much. Don’t get me wrong you learn a lot but if you don’t use your better judgement in the real world whether you train or not doesn’t make a difference. People leave for all kinds of reasons but the two you stated are among the top. Like I said get your license and go elsewhere, you can have hassle free job and operate better equipment.

Hello. So you’ll need a class B license with a passenger and air brakes. Depending on the state you’re out of you may require additional endorsements. Call academy to find out exactly what’s needed for your state. With training you’re subject to two weeks of comprehensive driving/training with an instructor. Once complete you’ll return to your terminal and go out with a member of safety to be cleared then you’ll hit the road from there. If you don’t have a CDL at all again you’ll need to call to find out what’s needed

For the most part you’re usually in a particular area but from time to time you’ll go out. If they keep you out they or the group will pay for a hotel. Training is about 2 weeks with experience, it’s more so a refresher course. If you have a class A you can keep it, you just need the necessary passenger endorsements for your state.

No disrespect to you but you sound like a kid who's simply excited about driving buses. I started working part-time at Academy back in 1997 at Hoboken and learned all too quickly that Academy was so unfair to their drivers with respect to pay. Drivers were cheated out of wages and I had my share of those experiences too. Back during those days, drivers could compensate by using the buses for personal endeavors. After the company installed GPS and cameras, those opportunities waned. Long days with low pay. Heavy load bearing work like airport pickups for 50 people who have 100 Lbs of luggage each. You could end up packing nearly 5,000 Lbs of baggage in the bay area, all by yourself, especially at New York area airports. You will do the same at ship terminals too and hope that people will tip you. An extremely annoying regulation that Academy had and still has is the governance of the bus engines. Academy buses have a maximum speed of 68 MPH! Say your'e on the road in a state like Virginia where the speed limit is 70, you'll have a most difficult time to flow with traffic. We pleaded with the company for years to turn the governors up and they steadfastly refused. You come to work and learn that your job was cancelled? Academy doesn't compensate you. You'd better hope that something else opens up or you'll go home with no pay. That's the Academy way.
