We're at a local BUS DEPOT today in Ithaca, NY!
The shop manager tells me that they have had some bad luck with replacement dealer-installed Ford V10 engines.
3 buses have had engines replaced within a month, and they are ALL not running right! He wants a second opinion, so he can proceed with warranty claims.
Let's start with bus #189 that runs like GARBAGE and perform a thorough diagnosis.
We have to find ALL the problems and give the shop a recommendation!

When i was at ford during the great Triton disaster years, Ford ran out of new 2Vs and 3Vs because of so many issues, we use to get engines from Jasper, S&K and one other i can't think of and at some point about half of them were coming in bad, no compression, ticking, no oil pressure ECT... the owner broke down and started buying trucks (junk and used) just to pull engines from so we could rebuild them in house and line the back wall of ready to go engines to swap because he got so tired of all the come backs. How i got lucky to have been working at a dealer at the time that cared that much, i don't know, but good luck finding one like that now.

I bought two old rusty 2001 F250 V10s from a customer of mine for my salvage yard and had to drive them there. One of them was towed to my shop awhile back after the oil cooler line rusted thru and blew all the oil out on the interstate and seized the engine and I basically told him it was junk so he towed it back to his place where it sat for a couple years but after considering how it locked up suddenly vs having no oil for thousands of miles and damaging the engine over a long period of time, I figured it would probably turn over and run so I pulled all 10 plugs, sprayed a few cans of penetrating fluid into the cylinders and came back a week later and did the same thing. Put a breaker bar on the crank bolt and a pipe on the handle and it still wouldn't turn until I gently tapped on the harmonic balancer with a ball peen hammer and it moved a thousandth of a degree which meant the crank bearings were free but the rings were stuck so I tried to move the crank back and forth that little bit and it finally turned over and felt real nice with no rough spots. Put a new starter on it, hooked up a couple extra batteries in parallel and cranked it several times to blow the fluid out of the cylinders then did a compression test and they were all at or above spec. Blew everything out with compressed air and put it all back together and got it to run on brake cleaner since the fuel pump was shot. Replaced the fuel pump and drove it 50 miles to my salvage yard no problem! Those 2V non VVT Ford modular engines are damn near indestructible. I wouldn't have bought them if they were 3V VVT pieces of junk. Gonna drive that this winter and save my 2002 F250 7.3 from rusting any more. What I save not having to buy DEF makes diesel fuel affordable.

My first thought was that the ignition coils were bad, then when the compression test told about bad compression I thought that it was assembled with bad valve clearance, which happens. But the coolant leak tells me that it wasn't properly assembled. Modern engines have torque to stretch bolts, and reusing them will lead to failures. The engine builder might have failed to check that the heads were plane before assembling too. So I wouldn't be surprised if the dealer cheaped out too much.

If the reman engine didn't get new coils, what else didn't it get? Multiple engines with similar issues says something likely wasn't done right during assembly. The coolant leaking is pointing to something with the head. As others have stated, maybe the bolts just didn't get torqued properly - amount, order, or both.

Are those Jasper engines or Ford engines. Either way, coolant in the chamber is definitely problem one with possible more problems to come! Both those engines need replacement. A note here. I just remembered. We had Ford trucks with V10's and when a new Ford engine came in a crate, it had new Motorcraft spark plugs and new Motorcraft ignition coils. They also had new crank and cam sensors. Sometimes new Ford exhaust manifolds were ordered cause the old ones were leaking, but always came with new plugs, coils and sensors. Good one Ivan!

I don't know how but this video from ivan got past me So I may bet late to the party 😊 First I keep hearing new engine thrown around while I think I heard ivan actually say it was a new short block which means the shop doing the replacement was responsible for the heads, the installation of the heads, et cetera. Regardless,, the fact that Ivan found a cylinder full of coolant absolutely points at your classic blown head gasket or. some kind of mechanical issue, such as a cracked cylinder wall, piston et cetera. If it was a long block, then the engine rebuilder is responsible, if it was a short block, the engine installer is responsible since tjey are tje.ones who intalled the heads. Either way, the shop that was ultimately paid to do the work is responsible to make the customer whole. And they are the ones who need to go fight the issue with either the installer or the rebuilder. Hope y'all have a great day! 1) Checking spark like that is very wrong. Can fry coil, and if the spark jumps to a wiring harness, fry computers. 2) Prior to checking compression you should have cranked with the injector disconnected to blow out all the unburnt gasoline 3) #1 thing to check after an engine swap with misfires is the firing order where ignition cables, coil control plugs and or injectors are on the wrong cylinder.

Ford's reman engines are not known for their reliability. I had a 6.0 powerstroke that I installed at the dealer and the customer drove it on a trip afterwards. I was notified a few days later that it was coming back, customer said it was blowing oil out of the dipstick tube. Of course everyone was pointing the finger at me but after tearing the engine down, it had grenaded two rods/pistons. The truck still ran, just smoked like a freight train. I hope your customer gets his diag money back and his engines repaired properly. I have heard that there is a shortage of V10 reman engines. Our last V10 had to get rebuilt instead of a reman due to that reason.

There are many videos on Ford 'quality' remanufacturered engines having problems. Concerned customers may notice something strange with the long block, only to disassemble and find out there is a complete disaster inside. Scratched, worn and out of tolerance crank journals. Broken bolts left in the block. AND mismatched piston sizes with one or two oversized pistons but all the others are standard bore. Thats quality right there! Will it work? Sure, maybe. But your spending a lot of money for a factory rebuild that you would expect to be better than this...

I reckon you've come across an American strain of a bug that I've often seen crop up here in the U.K. - it's rife in Corporate deals or to firms with large inventories - poor quality kit or services sent in relying on no one doing much checking. It was tried on me once I'm sure - on calling my local main Ford dealer for a guaranteed recon engine, I was offered a so called "brand new spanking York" in an original crate with docs for very little more money so did the deal. First suspicious thing - warning label to fit a new oil pump - in the sump (oil pan) on this model - called the dealer "are you sure this unit is NEW?" I didn't believe his "yes" so fitted the unit on a test bed - no comp on two cylinders (at least this saved me some work) on calling the dealer with the good news - he said he'd put into Ford's for diagnosis, I then quoted him some of our laws on merchantable quality etc., eventually - after much argument - he sent over another unit exactly the same as the first and the bill!!! I tested the second engine as if I worked for NASA before it went anywhere near a truck - it was fine and carried on working for over ten years. The dealer and I ended up in legals - all huff and puff from him, stack of evidence from me - he took it all the way to a court appearance and then failed to show up! The dear old Judge said "we take a very dim view of this kind of thing" and awarded me full costs.

Also, in finding the coolant issues of bus #1, I would pressure test the heck out of #2 with that bore scope. I bet he finds coolant seepage. If those mills are official Ford remans, that is a real quality control issue. If they are outsourced for Ford, (local shop etc) I as a fleet customer would push the issue as high up as I could go with Ford.

If the dealer did it they should’ve sold a Ford reman long block. That gives them another warranty with the engine. The fact the dealer is turning them away and the poor quality of the reman makes me feel like there is some cost cutting happening somewhere. Maybe cheap wholesale deals on NonFord reman engines, sourced by the bus company. Hence why the dealer washed their hands of it. Just my 2¢

Great diagnostic Ivan! Hmmm. #1 who sources these engines? Could they be "counterfeits" due to supply and demand where Ford or dealership or both use a 3rd party supplier without quality verification or lowest cost, etc? We've seem knock off parts in oem boxes where even a distributor didn't know they weren't true oem. A short or a long block engine might not have been received from a certified supplier vendor? Hey with all the corruption going on in industry or the support supplier network....Id wager at the end of the day, NOBODY bothers to check the quality or adherence to minimum standards of conformance! I worked as a machinist, assembler, taught SPC, spent 8 of my 27 years in QA as a grade A certified inspector covering everything from the inspection/tests of the raw materials to the finished product and everything in between! There is no way such a massive mistake could ever get this far UNLESS NOBODY EVER audited the supply chain. Holy S%*t!!! We are ALL in deep do-do......and things are about to break down like no one has EVER SEEN BEFORE. Thanks for all you do, Ivan! We need more individuals with your skillsets if we are to survive this automotive apocalypse!🕵🙏😍

Must build up a lot of pressure not to mention standing waves and that sort of thing. Prob has nothing to do with it. Since I'm here halfway and open to guesses timing chain? Harness plugs going to the wrong coil? Back to the real action.

I replaced the cylinder head gaskets in my 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine almost 5 years ago since I replaced the hydraulic lifters meaning that I had to unbolt the cylinder heads to replace them & that form of employer who had me employed as a casual/contractor hasn't wanted to employ me as an electrician ever again. So what else can I say ss a Holden ? I think that Ford drew a circle around the problem !

Back in 1960 when I was 17 my twin brother and I managed to get a 1940 Chevy 6 cyl half block, went to the junkyard and got an old worn out head, hand ground the valves and put it together without any help from anybody. It ran like a top and even started at 40 below zero. Are there no good mechanics left for the dealers? I took my 2008 Nissan to the dealer and they couldn't find out what was wrong with it, even though I know what it is. I'm still looking for a way to fix it.

Absolutely, it blows my mind that manufacturers decided to use plastic on things that really should never be anything but metal, such as using plastic intake on ford modular 4.6. wouldn't you know it, it cracks and then causes coolant to leak. Requires replacement with a dorman brand that's supposed to be an "upgraded design"

Wasn't that 2012 era that these V10's would blow the spark plugs out of the cylinder head?? A friend of mine had a pickup with the V10 and nothing but troubles of having to take it back to the dealer and if not the spark plugs were being blown out, stripped threads and 3 different brands of spark plugs and if that wasn't enough, coils had to be replaced and if that wasn't enough, it was problems upon problems, three and four problems time and again; well that truck of his spent nearly 3 months at the dealer. This truck didn't even have 60K miles on it and once my friend had enough of the dealer's bs, he flat out got rid of it and bought a Dodge Ram Diesel for his new work truck. I'd have to say that these V10's weren't worth the powder to blow them to hell! He had a fortune in repair bills that wasn't covered under warranty either!! When things go so horribly wrong with these V10's, get rid of them as fast as you possibly can, is what I say! They tend to be absolute junk and to just think of just how many vehicles had this engine is even more scarier yet! We're talking about some motor homes, buses of course, pickups and yes some cars as well and to actually trust these types of repairs being done by the dealers is even scarier yet!

Ivan, I'm not a New Ford man, love Chryslers and older Chevy 5.3s,. As far as I am concerned, most newer Fords are design-wise "JUNK". Ford has taken over the mantel of RECALL KING! They really make too much junk today, period! Somebody messed up those engines so the Bus maintenance supervisor needs to get to the bottom of this situation or advise the fleet manager to purchase better vehicles.

If it's a 265psi pressure transducer, then why does the pico setting only say 135psi? (If I'm wrong, please correct me-- but you can see the setting above every waveform you show on screen). Even your "known good" said it was only 75psi.. I'm not even sure an engine can run at all that low. You typically see 120psi to 150psi. 135 (pico setting) is virtually half of 265 (transducer rating).. so if you double your readings, that would make a lot more sense. The cylinder with 75psi would be actually 150psi.. and the 45psi cylinder would be actually 90psi... which is definitely a bit low. The cylinder full of water is a smoking gun though. I just wonder if they re=used the old head bolts maybe? Or maybe they didn't even get torqued down properly? strange video

Ivan can I ask you a pretty detailed question and maybe spit ball me some ideas, I’m not the best at network problems but have learned a lot from you and really wanna figure this one out. It’s a late production 2018 F250 6.2 crew cab, somehow it starts and drives but literally nothing else on the car works. Topology report shows HS1 and HS2 as the only 2 trees. You can communicate with the PCM, BCMII, and BCM-B on the HS1 network and then every single other module on the car is down, the entire HS2 tree. On wiring diagram it shows the car has HS1 HS2 HS3 MS1 MS2 and MS3, all of those networks go into the gateway module which is the back side of the DLC connector, it’s a little module box that the dlc comes out of. From the front side of the dlc when I scope HS1 the network looks fine but when I scope HS2 it looks like the network is being pulled down most of the time. First of all how come all of these networks go into the gateway module but topology shows all of the networks on HS1 or HS2? How would you go about taking the next step on something like this? Any ideas would be appreciated

If these are reman engines, I don't think Ford does those. It is outsourced to another company. It doesn't make it right but just saying. Those ignition coil boots are often overlooked when people do tune-ups on those engines. Motorcraft plugs only and change the boots when it is tune-up time.

I think it is reasonable with a pressure transducer in a cylinder that is just idling. Remember, you are not cranking and building up pressure in a pressure gauge with a one-way Schrader valve in it with the throttle held wide open. This is the pressure in the cylinder on one stroke: all of the pressure is relieved each time the exhaust valve opens and none is stored between strokes and the air sucked in is at intake manifold pressure.
